Want to Raise Pigs on your own Self Sufficient Homestead? We've been doing it for years and it's been very rewarding and without major challenges. All things considered, it's a pretty easy way to provide your own meat.
As soon as we pick up the little wiener pigs we have 120lbs of meat available and by the fall we'll have over 1000lbs of meat. Just walking around out there getting bigger!

If your daughter is going to do the feeding. have her take the dry feed in a bucket and when she's going to lay out the feed, shake the bucket, that way the pigs will get used to her shaking the bucket which will tell them they're about to get fed and they'll come to her. Then when you go to catch them just get you a bucket with feed in it, shake it and they'll come to you.

This video reminded me of a time in my youth. My Mom, Dad, and I moved from a northern town and onto my grandparent's abandoned homestead for about a year. My Mom and I spent a lot of time there by ourselves. This was one of the many amazing experiences of my childhood. We raised pigs and chickens, snared a bumper crop of wild rabbits, and had a garden. I would ride in the old 56 Pontiac to the bottom of the mountain to catch the school bus. I would watch the ground pass by through its rotted-out floor, dust rolling through the cab. There were plenty of stories created from the experiences to share. Thank you for taking us along to vicariously relive our memories, to help some of us dream of something different, and for those few that will take massive action to live those dreams because of your channel. All the best, always. Cheers!

This is why I like to socialise the pigs. _When_ they get out, they just come over to say hi and then head back when you bring them some food. Trying to force a full grown pig to do something it doesn't want to do is an exercise in futility!

Greetings from the land of Blaze King, thanks for the hog raising video. When I was a kid on the farm we raised a few like that every year, selling some and some going into bacon, ham and moose sausage. Don't ever let them eat meat if you can help it. Ours started killing any chickens that would wander in after they got the taste one year. So I've read, feeding them fish doesn't make for the best Easter hams either. :) Stay well up there you all.

A few months ago I processed a couple of the pigs are raised in a coop Style. So two friends split the cost a food and shelter and my part was in every day feed and care as well as being the number one person in butchering. We split all the meat 3 ways and it worked out really really well. And the meat is beyond fantastic and I know for sure that every single day of their lives was really wonderful and they were fed high-quality feed with tons of produce from my Gardens every single day and the very last day I give them a good treat and dispatch them with one shot, they don't even know what happened. I'm also raising some sheep in the same Co-op Style and two lambs will be ready to process and another month. Mama sheep is already pregnant and should be dropping in a month or two. Next spring I'll get a couple more piglets from a neighbor and start the pigs all over again. I sure wouldn't mind getting a couple of Dexter steer next year. I don't care for raising meat birds so I do quail instead. I feel like Co-op and bartering meat and veg are going to be the way of the future.

Keziah has emerged as the media person from amongst her sisters, hasn't she? A real comfort and natural style with the camera that comes across very well. As to the rodeo 🤭 - I know it makes for some good footage (!) but for anyone wanting to make it easier, reduce the space they have to run around in and then use solid boards to corral them for collection (in UK, we call them "Pig Boards", which is a clue 😂). Still my favourite channel and makes me smile when I see another video is available. Great stuff and thanks for sharing.

Pigs are great, we had them growing up. We had basically the same type of food but we didn't get it by the ton. When we mixed it with water we called it slop. The cool thing about electrical fencing is you can train the piglets to it when they're young, then move them around with portable fencing so they can work on clearing land (same with goats). When they're trained young to an electrical fence, you don't have to worry about electrifying it when they're older, they respect the fence. You might have to worry about predators, though, but if you're in this situation, you know what predators if any are in the area.

We give them a mix but the feed we buy is either whole or rolled corn. The rolled corn looks like corn flakes. We soak all of our corn the min it comes home from the store. Even if it will not be fed out for weeks we still soak the corn. A pig like the ones you bought here are $25 to $35 each. We call them feeder pigs. We do not breed any more as Males are such a problem. We we purchase GILTS only and it saves us a lot of pain in the future since males or boars are so aggressive and it is also a pain to process them because you have to Castrate the males and if you wait till they are sexually mature than the meat will make you vomit from all the testosterone. So we castrate all of our males if and when we have them. Good luck. Jim in Chile

Just a thought, also kitchen scraps.
