Great work. Great planter. Lovable planter. Just to add a fact, the function of this planter is not meant for draining water from the top box. You would need a protective plastic to help catch and avoid spillage. You do not want dirty water dripping on that beautiful base. I like your neat build.

Big fan of your channel since discovering your workbench build. I feel like the laminated fence pickets for the bottom shelf are too noticable at the end grain though. Debating between adding bottom stretchers to cover those up or just using more cedar decking cut to 2x2 dimensions like you did for the legs. Guessing the latter would mean buying another board though.

This could easily be adapted to hold a grow light for starting seeds indoors and taken outside for hardening plants to plant outside after frost danger is past. Also would work great for an indoor herb garden for fresh herbs year round. I'm gonna need two or three of these. Curious why you didn't use half laps on the legs since the bottom shelf is half lap joints.

Awesome love it! I built a different style planter last year, I used spar urethane for outdoor furniture. My wife wants another one, I like this design except she wants the planter box portion painted turquoise... Also looking forward to seeing your new shop completed, lol I'm not a hater but definitely jealous 😂😂

If you use crystal clear water based poly it shouldn’t impact the color too much. For the bottom shelf wont the paint on the ends of the support beams cause the glue to not bond the shelf as well to the legs? Wouldn't sanding the paint off of those locations allow for a stronger glue bond and a stronger shelf? Other than that this is a great build i cant wait to get out in the shop and give it a try.
@BearMountainBuilds Жыл бұрын
When I painted the supports for the bottom I tried to not get too much paint on the ends, but you’re right that if you want max strength it would be best to either mask the joints off or sand them before gluing. Either way it’s still plenty strong as is
@ckershner74 Жыл бұрын

Would the brad nails/glue combo hold up long term? or would it be better to add screws as well?
@BearMountainBuilds Жыл бұрын
Screws will always be more durable. I just used Brad nails because it’s simple and fast. I think the Brad nails and glue will last for quite a few years
@peteryelverton2954 Жыл бұрын
With cedar being soft and using cedar fencing, which is a thin piece of wood, you would run the risk of splitting the wood with screws. I would get thicker cedar planks (which is more expensive) if I was going to use screws.

What is Pressure treated Cedar tone wood? Is that something that can be bought at Home Depot or Lowes or is it just plain old pressure treated planks treated with cedar tone stain? I want to make some of these planters but I'm very confused about the "pressure treated cedar tone" wood.
@BearMountainBuilds Жыл бұрын
It’s a board that is generally used for decking that can be bought at Home Depot or Lowe’s. I bought mine from Home Depot. It’s pressure treated so it can’t rot and the cedar tone means it’s artificially colored like cedar
@DennisMathias Жыл бұрын
So, won't the nails rust out? What about dowels.
