I was blessed in my 1st reef tank to have them appear for free. Must have been in the natural Fiji rock I used. I looked in my refugium one night with a red light and they were everywhere.

I have done multiple bottles in my fluval Evo because I am keeping a mandarin. I have a refugium built into one of the chambers I had originally poured a bottle and they did not really take off. However, I am getting a jar of them from algae barn And I am hopeful that I can get a culture going in my refugee because they do get expensive to dose for the Mandarin after a while.

I got two bottle cultures of them from favorite aquarium store and rotifers to feed them while getting supplies. I only really keep a slipper lobster for salt; mostly keep fresh but I wanted to experiment with culturing feeder crustaceans and snails.

Do you change the water on the pods
@TheCoralReefTalk

You may need to and you would use a sieve to catch the pods and strain the water. I split my culture by using another container and then added a fresh batch of saltwater to dilute the levels.

Can you cultivate in sump with no fuge? I know many people do that with refugium's. I dont get how though. Dont they get sucked back in the return to pump and caught in filter socks if the fish dont eat them all? How would the even get from sump to display? Is that through return? probably dumb questions lol. I have a some difficult fish to feed like my watchman gobie wont come out. I got him a few weeks ago and only saw him once after the first few days he went into hiding and same with a blennie! Might be dead but no amonia in tank and it was a few days ago he came out! I guess he is eatting bristle worms or something.!
@TheCoralReefTalk
@TheCoralReefTalk 7 ай бұрын
It's better to cultivate them in a separate container. But yes the return pumps will cycle them through the aquarium. Adding chaeto to the sump or an area where they can populate and reproduce like the pod hotels can help. But I recommend a separate container as the reproduce and you split your culture and some to your aquarium.

so im confused as to how to keep them going.. pour new pods in, feed w phyto. But what is the feeding rate? Or do I keep feeding to keep the tint the same? Then when its time for me to take some out, do I do a complete water change or just take out the waste and add fresh saltwater and phyto again? Thank you!
@TheCoralReefTalk
@TheCoralReefTalk 2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for watching maybe I'll do an updated video. Great questions. So you can feed phyto daily or every other day or so , small amounts just to keep the water lightly tinted. When it's time to harvest you want to use a 90 micron sieve and syphon then thru. So u can feed u're tank the pods and not the water. For water change when splitting cultures add in what u take out and make sure salinity is the same and adjust accordingly. I'll put a link in a pinned comment to the complete instructions. Thanks again for checking out the video.

so they won't reproduce on their own in the display tank NOR the fuge??
@TheCoralReefTalk
@TheCoralReefTalk 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah they can for sure reproduce in the fuge. But if they are being consumed by your tank inhabitants a good way to have an ongoing supply is to culture them separately.

@@TheCoralReefTalkThanks for the reply! In the last few weeks that I have been culturing Tigger pods, I performed a water change. The water I pulled out, of course, contained pods. I added those pods to a container where I had just cultured phytoplankton. The container had a layer of phyto attached to the container. I figured why waste it. The pods exploded in growth, got huge and mating like crazy🤪! Definitely was more than a slight coloration.

In regards to thew salt water parameters, are they important to culture pods? I'm using freshly made saltwater with a salinity of 1.025, but it seems after adding seachem phytoplankton the ph drops to 7,4 and my pods keep dying...
@TheCoralReefTalk
@TheCoralReefTalk 4 жыл бұрын
Yes keep your salinity stable and do not add to much phytoplankton. Do you have a constant bubble rate in your container?
@FlyingHeavyMetal1

@@TheCoralReefTalk thanks for the reply. I have a constant, slow bubble going on (1/sec) and I add a little bit of Seachem Phytoplankton. Like 5ml in 5 litres.

I tried tiggers too. No success.. Think I didn't put enough phyto. Will try again your method. Have a mandarin and been buying bottles of pods like a drug addict to supply my Mandarin so he won't die of starvation. I finally been able to train him to take brine shrimp from a target feeder. 😊
@TheCoralReefTalk
@TheCoralReefTalk 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah mandarins can deplete pod populations fast. Keep up on water changes and how many days the pods go inbetween. Slow rate of bubbles worked for me and just a slight tint to the water is ok when adding phyto.

Unfortunately I don’t culture my own pods so I have to go buy a couple bottles every few months from reef nutrition. I did try a culture once and it didn’t go well. But because I have a mandarin I’m stuck in this expensive cycle.

Well they definitely have quality products. My first attempt wasn't good but So far these containers are great, I'll pour half in the sump and then add more saltwater, feed phyto and so far so good. What if you tried again with like half a bottle?

In order to keep the copepods alive is to acclimate them or lower the salinity in your jar...in the bottle it hovers around 1.021 and just dumping them in could kill and shock them ...
