Replace the moldy insulation! We had a very minor leak and the insulation became moldy AND SPREAD! You will save your family from illness from it if you replace them now! I am a retired nurse and Physician Assistant and would caution against leaving them in place as they are. Like the other response said, ask for a partial refund for them. Or not.

Absolutely replace the moldy insulation!!! You cannot kill mold. Fb has millions of people that are sick from mold in their homes. Mold is now a health crisis in the USA. Kristina Baehr on utube & her husband & her 4 children were very ill from mycotoxins that are produced from mold that cause a variety of issues including neurological. She had a beautiful newly built beautiful home worth millions. She is an attorney that now fights for families that have lost all their belongings & Health to mold & other environmental toxins. Great job on the house guy’s it is going to be beautiful. Hope Heather feels better she is such a beautiful person🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s

Chlorine kills mould spores but they are in the air constantly and will return. Most people use bleach which bleaches the colour from the mould but does not kill the spores. I live in Cornwall in the UK and mould is a constant problem due to the high atmospheric humidity. A domestic Mould and Mildew spray containing Chlorine will keep on top of the problem. Landlords tend to try and mask the problem with dehumidifiers and opening windows, yes, that is one part of controlling the problem but a spray or solution of Chlorine is another part of it. It is harmful to pets and people and must be used with utmost caution.

With the air gap behind the foam board, you will need venting to allow moisture out. The foam board acts as a vapor barrier with the gap trapping moisture and thus will form mold on the roof side.

I'm doing similar insulation in my heated barn. But leaving a ¾" air gap above for air to flow from the eaves through the gap to the ridge vent. IMPORTANT: Apply a sealed moisture barrier between the heated room air and the foam and roof joists. Warm air holds lots of water, cold air doesnt ... warm air will constantly convect across cold surfaces and dump its moisture there as contact with the cold surface cools the air, soaking joists all winter long. Your ceiling is a winter-long room dehumidifier if you let moisture get past your moisture barrier to where the temperature is at the dew point.

hey there guys... been watching for awhile.... Fellow American living in Europe here and ...Interior designer. I have done many many renovations on old buildings.... may I suggest the following: 1. 24" deep stone walls do not insulating... in fact the stone needs to breathe in order not to damage the joints/mortar... so I do realise this comment may come too late but I didn't realise just how much you were drywalling...... make sure there is an air gap so that drying of condensation can occur. If you do choose to leave stone apparent, you can seal the joints and the stone... this will prevent sand deposits over time (adds to cleaning) make the stone look clean and also allows walls to breathe. You can go fo r shiny, mat, wet look... many, many finish options out there ready to respond to your choice of look. 2. You can consider flush mounted fixtures and/or exposed electrical conduits (EG Copper pipes) on old building like this and void a lot of headaches with the cutting of brick and beams. You can look at a company named Creative Cables (Italian) who have some lovely flush mounted and exposed conduit solutions that will save you time and headaches. 3. You have spent a lot of time cutting and hewing and making stone walls look pretty. May I suggest you leave more stone apparent? It is a shame to cover it up especially given the very painstaking labor you have already done. Hope this helps 😊

Did you have an engineer plan this for you? Polystyrene is not an ideal material for this type of situation, The roof is made out of wood and thus moves over time due to moisture changes. This causes gaps between the insulation and the wood (in addition to the gaps that occur due to unprecise cutting) as well as maybe nasty screeching sounds. The gaps have zero insulation value and also enable convection, meaning moist, warm air can protrude to the cold wood behind the insulation and cause condensation/mould. These things need to be planned carefully which includes all details such as cable protrusions, transitions to other parts of the building, vapor barriers etc.
