The Legacy has been in Subaru's lineup for many years, and has always had AWD. Under the hood is a 2.4L turbocharged flat-r that is pumping out 260HP & mated to a CVT transmission. On the outside you will find simple Subaru styling. On the inside you will be greeted to an 11.6in infotainment system, higher fit and finish. Is the 2021 Subaru Legacy XT a BETTER midsize sedan than a Camry AWD?

My wife wanted one of these in Touring XT trim. We cross-shopped the competition and this is the only car that ticked all the boxes: AWD, great interior design, comfortable ride, memory seats, decent power, quiet and efficient. I wanted a K5 GT but I couldn't find one within a thousand miles to even test drive, so I said screw it. Anyway, I've got a Challenger Scat Pack Shaker for hooning around in...

I have a 2020 Touring XT and love it. The review is pretty spot on. A very comfortable ride and a lot of overall bang for the buck. Yes the infotainment system can be a bit quirky but I think that holds true for many other brands including my former Honda Accord. Speaking of the Accord and reliability.....I unloaded my 2013 accord because of the starter issue which Honda acknowledges with a Service Bulletin but not a recall. I had to have my starter replaced. It was fine for 6 months and then the same issue started again. I used to be one who always praised the reliability of Honda and sadly I no longer share that opinion. From my experiences, that seems to have slipped over the last decade.

I bought a Legacy Touring XT at the beginning of summer. Shopped all mid size sedans and it was the most comfortable for my 6' 4" frame. The Touring XT has a pull out thigh extension that really supports my legs. Easily the most comfortable seats in the class and on the Touring they're ventilated. They're a really sharp tan nappa leather too. One of the best looking interiors in class. Plus it beat all others in ride comfort and quietness. Yeah, the exterior styling is pretty conservative, but its not faddish and will still look like a Subaru Legacy ten years down the road. Plus it has the best resale value in the class. The engine is really strong too and the CVT is fine as long as you're not driving like a complete idiot. Subaru's is an in-house design and chain driven. One of the best CVTs on the market. All in all I'm really happy with it.

I totally agree Jeff. I am a first time Subaru owner and I also have been driving a 2021 Legacy Touring XT since January. You can not compare a the car to a Honda or Toyota in it's class because they don't offer AWD, or heated seats in the rear. And don't even get me started with a transversed mounted engine, just try working on one and you will never own one.

Own a 2015 legacy premium trim and absolutely love it. A lot of similar features to this model, just the older generation of course. Best car i have owned. The biggest thing i wish 2015 models had was the turbo. Was disappointed when finding out they didn't have the turbo for that generation model, but was happy to see them bring it back with the 2021 models.

Always enjoy your reviews with your energy and some wit. You just made me feel better about ordering (for lease) a 2023 Legacy XT Touring edition. I've had 7 consecutive leased high-end Accords, but the extra length of the 2023 made it too long for my garage and eliminated the Accord from consideration. (I'll miss the 2.0L/10AT drivetrain in my current Touring edition, and the great West Herr dealership, true enough.) My test drive in the XT plus refreshing my memory on the Symmetrical AWD living here in Buffalo were enough to convince me the Legacy was the way to go, since my wife already has a big, fat 4 door Wrangler Rubicon. The salesguy also steered me toward the Legacy as soon as he heard what my wifey drives. It's not QUITE as fast as the great Honda drivetrain, and the handling/body roll MIGHT be a tad softer, but I'm an old dude who will appreciate the comfort with the gorgeous brown Nappa leather. Besides, you properly zonked the new Accord on a few counts, and the great drivetrain is gone, anyway. The Legacy comes in a plainer wrapper, but with a fairly sumptuous interior. A zonk on the auto start/stop, the supposedly less responsive touch screen and the lack of LED turn signals up front, but the plusses outweigh the minuses. Everyone who commits to an order likes seeing a review like yours after the fact to support a decision. (I also put a deposit on a Sport Touring CRV after test driving it, but Honda leases on that impossible to find edition are outta sight...much better deal with the faster Legacy.) Thanks!

I have this exact vehicle in Black. I love it, I would however; choose a different color if given a chance. The black does look sharp when clean, but it shows every speck of dirt, and that is so annoying. The only other change I would make regarding the car is the addition of cooled seats. That option is only available on the next trim up (highest available); but I didn't care for the interior color scheme- with the Nappa leather- which is the only choice you have for that trim choice. It's a shame they don't offer a seat upgrade as a choice; that would have made the car perfect. Rides smooth, love the AWD and it does have a nice kick with the turbo engine.

Mixed feelings...I love my 4cyl 15 legacy limited. Purchased used and cheap in '18 w/ 55k miles on it and well documented from a friend. Best all season car I've ever owned. Looking for a replacement in '22 or '23 but I think I'm set on a camry because of the Subaru cvt trans. Subarus have better CVTs (Made in house) but it's still a cvt. I'd be concerned about adding that extra turbo power or v6 in a cvt transmission. 8k to replace when out of warranty as repairing them is apparently not an option. Toyota has 8 sp auto and naturally aspirated v6 as option. I don't know why Subaru refuses to put in a proper trans especially in the 6 cyl's or turbo 4's with more power. Frustrating for me as that is the only issue I have with Subaru. My subaru passed 110k miles so I want to get rid of it before problems with cvt start. I had trans fluid changed at 90k just to help extend its life.

To quote you Raiti " I almost forgot about this ride." That's Subaru's problem. Very nice interior, nice tech, and their AWD is probably the best out there, but exterior styling is super bland. Sedans have a hard enough time getting sales, Subaru needs to be a bit more bold, and no I don't mean a ton of plastic cladding like the new WRX.

@@RaitisRides hate the civic tails, the unpainted crosstrek cladding and how big the rear splitter is compared to the rear bumper. I don't understand why the wrx GT gets better seats and only the SubaruPerformanceTransmission(is it cvt or a true auto like the brz got?) I hope the STi is better than the wrx. It'll have the same motor, displacement may change, but it won't be an ej257 anymore that's for sure . I bet the 6spd is different wrx vs STi.

For years members of the Subaru fraternity were forced to make excuses for the budget interiors of their vehicles that helped pay for the brand's unique commitment to AWD. That weakness finally dawned on Subaru and the new models reflect the upgrades. Likewise, the 2.4L turbo in the Legacy (and the Outback) is a significant improvement (and far better suited to those models than to the very slow selling Ascent.) Unfortunately, the styling of the Legacy, despite some updates, remains "frumpy" compared to its rivals in the midsize sedan category. And Subaru's devotion to their version of a CVT transmission doesn't help. (CVTs have improved significantly in recent years but they remain a black mark for many consumers.) The result is flat sales compared to the first half of 2020, an especially problematic comparison given the fact that sales in the first half of 2020 was a pandemic casualty. Overall, sales of mainstream midsize sedans in 2021 have improved by 23% over 2020. The Legacy sale are up only 0.38%.
