Good synopsis though I am surprised that John M has not even mentioned RGV’s 1989 movie “Shiva”. IMHO, although Telugu cinema has produced some gems before, Shiva was a pathbreaking movie in their repertoire and genre of cinemas that made Telugu makers/audience surely turn a corner. The quintessential reason for making a good movie like Shiva a masterpiece was Raaja’s background score. JM spoke about how Raaja sets you up with the title BGM and conditions the audience in prior episodes, well this movie is an epitome for setup (atleast in Telugu cinema history). Please listen to the OST and match it with the visuals starting from the title score, the superimposition of Nagarjuna walking into the college campus glaring against the sun, cycle chasing scene, Nagarjuna walking into the hospital ward to witness the gruesome murder of his friend Naresh , first face-face meeting with Bhavani all the way to the title end credits with him pacifying amala, this movie is an epic on multiple dimensions. Songs were a rage but more for commercial content at that time, they were good but don’t add too much value to the tightly knit screenplay. However, without this background score (with the use if silence in key scenes), that movie would not have been elevated to this level. My exposure to Telugu movies were mainly through Kamal Haasan, KB and KV Sir's movies as those were the only ones which provided justice to dubbed movies. I started watching straight Telugu movies with the advent of Shiva (although it came as “Udhayam “in tamizh). Mani Ratnam’s Geetanjali deserves a mention too since we are discussing Raaja but please give credit to this musical and cinematic trendsetter. P.S: I apologize for addressing IR as Raaja but he is is in every fiber, nerve bone of our beings, our lives are unimaginable without his music , so took the liberty of making him dear. 🙏🙏🙏

I am a Tamil fellow, but listen to old Isaignani songs in thelungu just to make sure we enjoy those as well. One wonderful song I listen every week is 'yem debba teesavura' from movie Ashwamedham. Repeated listening takes us to a new level. There are also many Ilayaraja songs malayalam and kannadam that sound great.

Since we listen to Tamil songs many many number of times as compared to other language songs, it appears that Raja has done better songs in other languages....He has given same effort and commitment to all films...We can tell hundred Raja songs in Tamil which can't be compared in other languages....Since he wants each tune to be unique we can't expect the same melody in two languages unless it is intentional.

While it is fact that Raaja doesn't differentiate language, director, actor, budget etc when composing, Raaja has given outstanding music to many Telugu movies, maybe because of their themes were based on dance, singing etc.

💯, I am Tamilian grew up in a district in Karnataka bordering Andhra and fortunate to enjoy and grow listening to Raja's music in all these languages. Due to the volume of work in Tamil atleast 100-200 times more than in other language, his outstanding music in Tamil sometimes gets cannabalized by his own variety of music in Tamil. The volume of songs in Telugu and Kannada is smaller compared to Tamil and they stand out. In all he has given a treasure in every language and the winners are the lucky fans like us, let's continue celebrating this genius

Director vamsy and illayaraja combination is the best as far as songs, BGM and creativity. K. Raghavendra Rao, A. kodanda ramireddy... illayaraja... chiranjeevi films are commercial blockbusters. Kalathapasvi K. Vishwanath garu... illayaraja combination started with Sagara sangamam...(Thats the best work for illayaraja sir,k. Telugu version AlaigaL oimaivadillai is Seethakoka Chilaka. Darisanam kidaikkadha song is captured in Bits (Guruvayur Rajam, Janaki, IR). Whereas it is full fledged Grand song in Telugu “Sagara sangamamE” by SPB And P.Susheela. PS portions are with very less music but her voice spread across the Beach/Samudram. This is another example.

John Mahendran sir, just like u feel why Ilayaraja gave some fabulous melodies in Telugu, we Telugu audience envy why Ilayaraja gave only Tamil movies such mesmerizing songs, especially Ilayaraja, Yesudas and Mahendran sir combinations. I feel, you should have referred to the Telugu movie Maharshi directed by Raghava. Ilayaraja's music is magical. The goosebumps movements are there in all the songs throughout. Likewise, there is a NTR film, Yugandhar made in 1979 or so, much earlier than Seethakokachiluka (Alaigal Voyivadille in Tamil). You should analyze a song Dhaa, Dhaa, Dhaa. Dhaaste dhaageda. Yugandhar movie is a remake of Amitabh's Don. But if you compare the music, especially the background score, with due respect, Kalyanji Anandi ji pale. Had they seen Yugandhar, I am sure they themselves would have admitted this. Another Telugu movie is Abhinandana. A Kartik Sobhana film.Each song is a gem. Dont miss it. --Dr.P.Krishna Mohan Reddy
