Definitions change over time. Rakim speaks the facts on how the meaning of MC or emcee or however you decide to spell it means. Hell, MC eventually became microphone checker in the 90s which correlates to What Rakim says. You go back to the 90s and ask a lyrical artist if they like being called rappers. That would be an insult. Anyone can rap, not everyone can be an MC. Many argue that rap is not the same as hip hop regardless if rap technically falls under hip hop. That is why you hear MC’s say things like ‘This is real hip hop’. Hip hip may have started out as a culture but it is also a form of art in itself lyrically speaking. You wouldn’t catch me dead calling Mos Def, Gza , Inspecta Deck, or Big L a rapper. Those are hip hop lyricists.

Most people who founded hip hop would highly disagree with his opinion on what an MC is. An MC is originally intended for someone who can control the crowd and make them actually move. Hence Master of Ceremony. The fact that MCing later developed to become what Rakim did, which is tell stories with an intricate rhyme scheme and wide vocab, is just an evolution of the party-oriented genre. The true difference, like Ice-T said, is that a rapper is somehow distant and afraid of his own audience, while and MC is instead connected with his people, and is able to switch things up, because he's in control of the whole act. For this reason, imo, a rapper can now ber considered just a product a corporate america, a product of materialist means, while an MC is the expression of Hip Hop culture.

This old quarrel in hip hop can in fact be solved. The greatest mathematician of the last century was bad in mental calculation; he had a habit of making mistakes in this area. But what made him the greatest of the last century and one of the greatest of these last 2000 years? The depth of what he produced when he worked. In that field he was above all of the other mathematicians. What was his name: Alexandre Grothendieck. There was another great genius named John Von Neumann. Concerning mental calculation, he was way above Grothendieck and also above Albert Einstein. But no scientist would say that the achievements of Von Neumann equals that of Grothendieck and Einstein. Why? Because speed isn't what matters the most; the most important is depth. Once we understand that, we have the proof that concepts like emcee and freestyle are overrated. They are important but overrated. The root of those two important concepts in hip hop is a certain type of skill or sensibility that makes a hip hop artist to very easily find the good words to build meaningful sentences. It's in fact mental calculation applied to words. So, since it's totally wrong to say that to be a real mathematician one must be great in mental calculation, then it's wrong to say that to be a great hip hop artist, one must be great as an emcee or in freestyle. Many Rappers aren't great emcee or in freestyle. But when they sit down, take their pens and write on a piece of paper, what they produce is very deep. And in the crazy world we are living in, this ability is the peak of the mountain. So I am sorry to say that even the biggest name of hip hop haven't really understood their own art. Rakim (and other big names) said Eminem is the greatest but KRS said no to that. That proves that they all misunderstood something. 2pac can be the best because I don't know an american rapper who could be better than him when we talk about depth in writing. But among french rappers, I tend to think we can find a little group of artists that surpass him. For example, to me, "Cinquieme soleil" from Keny Arkana is the deepest and meaningful text we can find in hip hop (and perhaps in the music industry, simply). What this woman has written is cosmic. So things are more complex than people think. The french rap scene has really very great rappers like Soprano for example. And another point in which the biggest names are wrong is the importance of music. No human words can be as powerful as a well inspired melody, or a well inspired piano, violin, bass... play. A human opinion can be easily proven wrong but a good inspiration while playing any musical instrument will create beauty and respect forever - Bach, Mozart, Beethoven... are the proof of that. So hip hop artists must recognize that the quality of music that can be found on Vinyls, CDs... is more important than what happens during battles which are just the ego acting freely (and it's not something we must be proud of). No human voice can be more haunting than the good sound of a violin because pure beauty is eternal.

Hasn't Rakim got them mixed up though? From most explanations elsewhere MC is the party rapper, the one who gets a crowd going without too much emphasis on their lyrical content.
