The point about first impressions is so important. I had a bottle of Mortlach 14 OB a few years ago. That time when they just brought it to the official line but before jacking up the price. Good times. Anyway, when I first opened it, I was confused. It had a harsh briney note overpowering everything, like a maritime malt signature but way stronger. Settled quickly though and turned out to be a decent one.

I remember on a visit to Glenkinchie a few years back, the tour guide asked our party, 'what makes whisky?'.Some people said barley, some said water and some said yeast. I made the mistake of saying 'good casks' and was told 'NO'. Maybe by definition casks aren't taken into account but they make all the difference in the world. Cheers Ralfy.

Great comments about taking your time with a bottle. I had the exact experience you did with an Ardbeg 10 I opened around 2 months ago, I wasn't enjoying it until very recently where it seems to have settled down. I've also had bottles where that experience has been reversed. Wine cask finished malts where the wine finish qualities fade quickly

Haven't seen this around my neighborhood. I do believe I might pickup the 15, even at 43%. Lots of respect for Benromach out there in the ether. My first bottle of the vintage 2009 peat smoke was a great pour, put Laph10 to shame. I've been guessing your score a lot better this year

Hi Ralfy, a good review and a thing about upcoming extras, you mentioned warning of dangers with drinking. Please mention gout. I got an attack some 8 years ago and spent the most painful day of my career working on foot up and down and around Union Street, Aberdeen. I cut alcohol out and started having cider vinegar and honey every morning. I have had that every day since. The gout stopped. The cider vinegar dissolves Uric acid crystals and prevents them forming. I resumed modest drinking. However making cocktails and enjoying 1,2 or 3 daily, a week ago the cider vinegar stopped working and I suffered the most agonisingly disabling pain ever. Went to hospital 8.00am last Saturday and was told it was gout, a different strain to that previously. Proscribed 2 sets of pills I have now taken 9 and am abstaining from alcohol until pill course has finished. When complete, my imbibement will resume but on a much smaller scale. I have learned a lesson. 69 and never to old to learn! Nick from York

I’ve had a bottle a while now and as I slowly work my way down it’s greatly improving with time. I think it’s really decent whisky and I’m a big fan of Benromach, particularly the cask strength. The Cara Gold, triple distilled and Peat Smoke (bourbon cask) are all really good too…IMHO

I havent triede this particular botle from benromach but the " closed malt" problem, I have in particular experinced with the Machir bay, entry malt from Kilchoman. A realy decent malt by the way once opened up.

Absolutely love your channel thank you so much, also take my hat off to you for all the warnings you try to give about quality not quantity , as an ex publican it was heartbreaking to see what would be really intelligent and nice people on their knees because of alcohol addiction, We started an AA meeting once a week in a private room to try and help these desperate people,

I have the 2009/2020 Contrasts Peat Smoke bourbon cask and the 2010/2022 Contrasts Cara Gold. Both are excellent whiskies and reasonably priced. By the way, wouldn't the addition of peat smoke be considered an ingredient? Peat is being used to dry the malted barley deliberately so the peat smoke can impart certain flavours and aromas. So, for a new make peated spirit, the ingredients would be barley, water, yeast, and peat smoke. Cheers!

It baffles me every time Ralfy; I've known the importance of wood influence from the off. Not only because I've read about it, but also because you've used this platform on many an occasion to emphasise the fact. IT IS the 4th ingredient and considering all the imparted flavour is down to the casks, why on earth do whisky distillers not make more of it? Keep on ranting my friend!

For a minute there, I thought that because the list of “ingredients” didn’t include artificial colorant, Ralfy was going to say that it was to be implied that they didn’t add any. Which would have been a good thing but clearly that wasn't the case. But yes, “natural oak extract” should be included, a great point Ralfy made.

17:32 I get this emotional when I explain that there aren't (and never were) "sherry" casks used for whisky. All of those are seasoned. Even though only certain whiskys say they were matured in seasoned casks, it is true for all of them. You don't use fresh casks to make sherry.

And wouldn’t peat smoke or peat itself ALSO be an ingredient…??????

Ralfy, you’re essentially stating that whisky is essentially a tea made from new make spirit soaking in oak. Like a tincture of sorts.

I see a lot of distilleries and bottlers not disclosing whether the whisky has been chill filtered or not. I'll give a very good example of this The Six Isles Batch Strength. Nowhere on the label is it mentioned that it has no chill filtration, but when you put even a little drop of water in it, it goes cloudy as an ouzo. Another example is Arran Robbie Barns release, again 43% and no "non-chill filtered" on the label, but it still develops a satisfying mist on adding water. My theory on this is that not all casks in a blend are perfect, some have probably grown sour or astringent and they chill filter those to get rid of the heavier flavours that would sour the blend. So technically non-chill filtered but some casks are (but you can't put that on a label can you :D )

I'd like to share not the opposite, but also an observation. "Neck fill" has also a distinct flavour that is definitely worth of trying out. Not each and every whisky, but I definitely came across some that have strikingly different (sometimes better, sometimes not) taste of the neck fill.

The unpeated virgin air dried oak contrast was amazing. 10yr age statement, it wasn't the best bottle I've had but it was extremely interesting and kept me coming back to it.

Question, Ralfy: When you recommend to keep the mouth open during the nosing, do you mean one should inhale through both nose and mouth at the same time?

12:22 Benromach only uses first fill casks, as stated on the label. A cask that had Benromach in it before is still a refill right?
