Ralfy, at the start of your review your comments were fair but pretty tough on Fettercairn, and I expected the worst, however, as you actually nosed and tasted the dram you seemed to have mellowed a bit and evaluated fairly as a stand alone dram. That speaks to your fairness Ralfy, great job!

"If you see an overpriced decent malt, just calculate it in terms of how many Ardbeg 10's you can get with the money" (c) Ralfy 2020. Made me chuckle as that's precisely how I think. As for unpeated counterparts I would propose Arran 10, Deanston 12 and maybe Craigellachie 13 "metric units of value" :)

“Farven justeret med karamel” is actually Danish. Weird to see on a scotch single malt 😄

Its because some distilleries don’t bother with different packaging for export markets, so chances are it states the German ‘mit Farbstoff’ somewhere there as well. To my knowledge the only 2 European markets that have laws to dictate it be mentioned if it’s not natural colour.

I've tried a handful of Fettercairns now and always found them to be merely 'OK' when you assess the liquid only. When you factor in their horrendous pricing, I simply can't recommend them. They need to do a little more to increase the standing of their brand before attempting to break into the premium market. Conversely, there are some wonderful IB Fettercairns out there

I bought mine today, its the 3rd release. The box says Unchilled filtered & natural colour ( not on the bottle though) and 46.4% ABV. The label says Olorosso, Pedro Ximemez and ex-bourbon casks not whether they were matured or finished in them. The nose ok, nothing to rate , but the taste is really quite nice. Perhaps they saw your review above & did a bit of soul searching. I thought you were a little harsh in your commentary, but rated the whisky okay. Fair dues as you would say. As I was sipping mine listening to your advice, I really think you might like to try the 3rd release if you can get a hold of it. Its good stuff in my opinion.

RE old whiskies... Until the 1990s The Wine Society (in the UK) used to import sherry in barrel and after bottling it would send the casks to Scotland to age whisky in. Until recently the majority of this whisky seems to have ended up in (good and excellent value) 1 Litre bottles of 16 year old blended whisky. There have also been the odd excellent bottlings of Mortlach and Glen Grant too. Anyway. Recently a new spirit buyer has taken over at the Society and has shaken things up a bit. It seems that from now on all remaining old whisky stocks will be bottled as single malts. The first off these is a 1989 sherry cask (7 hogsheads and 2 butts) aged release of 2064 bottles. It is bottled at 46%, unchilfiltered and natural colour The label does not say what it is but i suspect there is a good chance that it is Mortlach... They Price? £95. Sadly it is all gone now but there will be more releases like this next year and I really think single malt fans should look into this. Properly bottled 30 yr old whiskies aged in real old school sherry barrels. Proper sherry barrels that originally held real sherry for drinking. Not sure we will see the like again. I haven't opened my bottles yet but the reviews i have seen have been very positive. Cheers.

@russell3733
@russell3733 3 жыл бұрын
Managed to pick up one of the 1-litre bottles left on the German market for €95 a month or so ago, which I find to be a fair price. It's been a bit hyped over here, since the German market is heavily tilted toward darkly finished malts (the idea that the more sherry the better due to more intensive colour is inculcated into the market here to the loud strain of fifes and drums!). And it's taking a while for me to get onto first name terms with this dram, but I'm getting there slowly as the fill level drops. Yes, I can very much agree with your comment about added water - too much does reveal the original ex-bourbon hoggies (which I normally have no problem with, on the contrary, they're my preferred maturation method), but some of the casks in the batch may have been a bit long in the tooth. So, yes, the freshness that stems from the secondary maturation in assorted sherry and port casks does imbue the dram with some real liveliness and I find it quite attractive. It's not, however, a top single malt in my opinion. Before you gave your malt mark I was reading 85 points into your comments, so I can appreciate your final tally here. So I'm happy enough to have invested in a bottle, but it's not going to make a Fettercairn fan of me due largely to Diageo's wildly optimistic pricing policy on this new range of malts. You've only got to ask yourself what on earth has Fettercairn done over the last 2 or 3 decades to cultivate a loyal single malt "drinkership". Not much at all, I'd say. And so they'll have to do a whole lot more to convince us whisky enthusiasts of their dedication to producing great whisky before they can demand the clearly inflated prices on their older bottlings (20 - 28 yo). I think you hit the nail on the head with that one, too. Cheers.

I've been mulling over the Fettercairn 18 recently, but at £175 it has certainly required some mulling and I'm not sure I'm there yet. This review, less so the taste of the whisky but more the comments on Fettercairn have most likely saved me £175, or at least some of that as I look elsewhere for another whisky matured in scottish oak (really enjoyed Glenallachie's 15 and 8 in this regard).

Who of us didn't have a teacher in our youth who chided us when we deserved it, when they knew we could have done better? Aren't those the best and most memorable? It's a parental thing to do. Some students/kids get a C- and it's a job well done, their best. Others get an A- and it's a shame on them, no effort, lazy, could've done so much better. I've seen distilleries "get" the point about 46%+ strength, yet still not getting the point about adding tint and removing flavor. Like that A- student, they deserve some tough love from a parent figure. Here's hoping that Fettercairn feels that way too :)

I bought a bottle of a 17 year cask strength Berry Bros Speyside Sherry bomb "Secret" store pick so I don't know the distillery. I actually tried the whisky at the store before I bought it and loved it for its depth and richness but the bottle was almost empty. My bottle is a disaster. Rotten wood flavour on the finish....even rotting sulphury flesh on the finish....cannot handle it. How does a whisky get that far along that it can be bottled and sold and taste like a dead porcupine? I paid close to 100 pounds for this bottle so I'm kind of peeved.

@@bishopburnboy416 Thanks for that Bishopburn Boy. I visited Fettercairn distillery a couple of years ago when I was driving from Glencadam distillery back towards Glasgow. It was closed to visitors at the time. There is a myth down in England that the chains around the unicorn symbolises Scotland''s subservience to the English Lion but, as I'm sure you know, images of unicorns have historically been made with chains to represent the fact that even when captured, they remain highly dangerous and can never be tamed (unlike horses). However, they become gentle and docile when stroked by a Scottish maiden. Romantic stuff indeed.

I find the distillery rather hard to separate from Linkwood in flavour profile, both are fine if you can find them at good prices - I'm concerned they're trying to premium-ise this, which is a terrible idea. Bringing a new official bottling of a malt traditionally only available independently should be an opportunity for the corporate owners of these blend-fillers to aim for the price-performance market with one of their older single malts. This doesn't look especially favourably priced compared to independent bottlings of the past, but then again, who knows what the "new norm" for prices are at the moment - the Signatory bottlings I used to love just a few years ago (Fettercain, Linkwood, Benrinnes, Dailuaine, etc 18-22 yos) have largely dried up, especially the affordable non-cask strength ones. Perhaps this might be worth picking up on sale, but the problem with it being limited is that it probably won't go on sale. I'm glad you found some enjoyment in it, however.

I could've told you to go buy a Bunnahabhain 12 , Bruichladdich the classic laddie, Ledaig, Springbank or the unpeated version Hazelburn, or Glen garioch or w/e peaty/smoky whisky you want. However in my humble opinion these whiskies tend to take more time to get the experience of them otherwise you might get disappointed. That's why I would've suggest you to start with Glennfidich 12, also a sherry cask whisky which I love is Glendronach 12 year old and it's a very affordable, give a go to Glenmorangie 10 or the other expressions of 12 year old and 14 year old Quinta ruban, Caol Ila 12 an amazing whisky as well, Aberlour is a very good choice. All those whisky's are at a very good price they are standard editions so the prices should vary just a little bit. And also I wouldn't call the cheap and mainstream whisky's trash, they tend to carry their own experience. Also some people will call it blasphemy I am a big fan of irish whisky - The Spot (green,red,yellow,blue), Connemara, Writers Tears, Teeling, Redbreast. And good luck mate!

@@Headbanger0624 Thanks for the advice. By "trash" I didn't mean cheap whiskeys in general, but around here it seems what most people think of whiskey is Johnnie Walker red or black label. GlenDronach 12 is over 100 a bottle here. I will research your other suggestions. I did go pick up a 2018 bottling of Ardbeg 10 so we'll see how that goes.

Independent retailers need to be very careful with what the purchase from Whyte and Mackay. They'll sell you something 'independent retail exclusive' one week and the next week you'll see it almost half the price in a supermarket down the road.

Whisky reviewers are often just as guilty of using overblown marketing drivel. What gets my goat is saying "expression" or "event" instead of bottling or version. FRO.

The bit about "creating a dark roasted color" in the hotter kilned malt is disingenuous on their part. There's no way for this color of the roasted malt to get into whisky. An example of "not a lie" yet clearly subconsciously manipulative. Just like Glenmorangie Signet - I've seen vloggers claim that the color is from roasting the malt. The "dark whisky" canard is so pervasive, it's internalized, subconscious and insidious.
