The people who skip the extras are really missing out. I continued my journey with Springbank's 10 (on yours and others recommendations), and I was able to share it with my Dad last week. It was a special moment for me. I also have to be careful when I take my moments because I live with mental health issues, and my medication doesn't mix too well with alcohol. So it makes them all the more special. Thanks for being a guide on my and others journeys. 👍

As we're nearing the end of this year, I'd just like to take this opportunity to warmly and gratefully thank you for providing the foundation and guidance to my own malt journey. No doubt, like countless of others, I have benefitted from your advice, wisdom and engaging commentary on all things whisky. I don't think I've missed a single review or extras. You my friend, are the cask strength of integrity reality......keeping it real, keeping it quality. Slainte mhath Ralfy 😁👍🥃🥃.

Hi there Ralfi, you Mischievous Massive Malty Master, greetings from Mexicali (a mostly beer infused town in Baja, Mexico)! Just dropping by to tell you your channel is just Top Notch, Non Plus Ultra, always a clever and sound advice for novices and experts alike. So, thank you very much for that. Anyhoo, even though you can get whisky literally everywhere now (here in our local supermarkets we are able to always find several 'blends' at VERY low prices, around £9-£12 for your Teacher's, J&B, JW Red, Black and White, VAT69, Passport, William Lawson, et al.), it is THANKS to people like you that we decide to delve into this 'water of life' journey you so eloquently and frequently discuss, always certain of one thing, we will not regret a single dram, dear ol' Ralfi has our backs... Sláinte!

I have loved a tot of whisky for many years, moreso than any beer. But never really took the time to savour it. That changed a few months ago at the ripe old age of 64 on our tour of Scotland in our motorhome covering 1500 miles over 3 weeks. A few whisky and distillery tours into the journey I began to realise the value of quality over Quantity. I am developing a taste for the peaty. I am looking forward to the journey along my peaty path and listening to your guidance.

I've been thinking about this lately, I've always enjoyed strong/flavourful things and I might not have realised but I guess I did go through my own journey. Used to drink beer and real ales on social occasions, mostly darker styles and sometimes stronger traditional style ciders, then a few years later tried red wine and got into that, gravitated towards the heavier styles. Picked up a single malt in the supermarket, may have been Tamnavulin, surprised how much I enjoyed it then I tried Old Pulteney and enjoyed that even more, worked up to 46%+ integrity malts and enjoying peat, now I can easily enjoy cask strength, indie bottlings along with rum and other quality spirits and really enjoy exploring whatever spirits currently take my fancy. It really is an experience.

Really nice!! I also started with real ales (and still enjoy them) and then moved parallelly with rums and whiskeys. I have never been a big fan oof the peated ones -I do appreciate complexity though- nor of overly high-ester rums. Sláinte!

My journey is doing just fine... No dames needed to sniff around my stash... I have found that drunkards most often drink cheap booze.. It is December...time to watch 30 drams of December videos... See who has fallen out...who has tried a different sampling tier.. I drink my whisky alone ...single malts are for my complete attention. I saw an Eldorado 15 and 12 on the top shelf in the back room of my old Super store that has a spirit and great wine, Cognac, Champagne area...amazing inventory I have depleted.. I have to go on a 6 hour one way journey to the capitol to get Unicorns these days.. I bought 8 bottles two weeks ago...2-3 dram flights is about my limit anymore ...quality over quantity is the best advice.. Cheers Ralfy.. Great mentor... Best of luck with new book sales...

First whisky if I remember was at some student party in the nineties, Canadian Black Velvet blended or something. Must have been a subpar experience because it wasn´t until about ten years ago I tried to buy whisky myself, rather optimistic with the Talisker Dark Storm. Been on a journey since then, with great help from you Ralfy with tuning in to the important parts - such as know what you taste, go slow and stay away from the flannel!

Good morning Ralfy, one more time thanks a lot for your valuable information and time and for making this journey more pleasant, so now I need your advice,as I mention before started to work at Springbank for a seasonal job and luckily They offered me a full time, so I'm really happy and have the opportunity to tried some of their drams in our tasting trainings, the only distillery I have visited is GlenScotia and I really enjoyed and bought the 8yo 2022 open day, due to I was trapped with Laphroaig for 8 years in my lovely Peruvian country, when I came here met with Longrow but when my friend introduce me the Springbank 15 it was like a revelation for me and I so now I'm planning to go to Isla in order to continue with this beautiful journey and know more about this industry. Please I would appreciate which distilleries must visit there? One more time thanks a lot for everything you do continuing this amazing journey? Muchas gracias Wayquey🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽

I now most blends are mostly cheap quality in comparison. But now and then, we should talk about the exceptions. I know you reviewed good blends in the past. I have a nice Loch Campbeltown 21 unopended in my collection. Looking forward to that bottle someday and somewhere is a sample of Antiquary 35. Not a big drinker, by any means, but intreagued by the taste experience, invested in some 'better' minatures Arran 10yrold, Deanston 10, Bunahabain 10, but is there a particular way to taste whisky on your tongue? I ask coz, folk say for instance with something like Guinness I've been told towards the back of your tongue is where you pick up the best flavours, is that just tosh? our tongues do have different sensory areas, does it matter is there a particular skill? What little I've tasted I've enjoyed and I think I'm beggining to pick up more and more of the subtalties. enjoying your videos.

I sometimes shop at a German discount supermarket who's name begins & ends with an L . Picked up their Xmas special, proudly proclaiming CF & e150 on the label, but £40 for a 19 yr. Islay malt. 2yrs ago they marketed a 16, last yr. an 18, but this year's is really worth investigating, despite being neutered. We should lobby for next year's, 20 yr? to be natural, worth an extra £10, at least.

Theres a Whiskey brand thats recently went on sale also thats Scottish that's called Jack and Victor Blended Scottish Whiskey. It's the 2 from Glasgows from Still game that's behind it. Had it it's not bad tbh Feel it in the Throat it has Honeyed orchard fruits and sweet malted barley balanced with a peat smokiness & notes vanilla and oak spice. Was a bit strong at first as first time having a nip of whiskey

Part of the reason I enjoy whisky is because it's such a powerful flavor and smell. Do to birth defects and life experiences I have an extremely diminished sense of taste and smell leaving most food and drink bland but by the gods uncork a bottle of quality whisky and I can smell that from across the room.
@richardkilley6838
@richardkilley6838 Жыл бұрын
For some reason a few years ago my sense of smell completely disappeared, it would come back now and then for a few minutes but vanish again. But due to a recent illness I was prescribed some steroids and after 2 days my sense of smell came roaring back and I was finally able to enjoy the smell along with the taste of my whiskys! My wife laughs at me because when I've got a dram I spend more time nosing it than sipping it!

yes , well said , but i do water my self with abbot 5 percent ale ;;; good one about the cleaner lady .. as for a serious note ,= i drink a fair bit of single cask , cask strenght from indie bottlers [ ns, je , inf fly, d mhor , e.t.c. ] and these are often left or finished in very expensive casks that had = px , oloroso , e.t.c. which means they are VERY tasty whiskys that have been first fill , so they are heavily flavoured ,, so the point is that they need no mixers to add any flavour , they would be pointlessly ruined ,,, so just buy a cheaper blend if you want to ' cocktail ' your drink ...

Wise words. While I've had whiskies since I was younger, I was a guzzler. Only about 2 year ago did I end that and wanted to get into the quality of flavor and aroma, and I started this late in life. So I'm new to whiskey, so therefore I appreciate any guidance on how to proceed cautiously. Few other thoughts... On the Master Distiller title, I wonder how many of these master distillers are actually floor-trained at the stills and the malt floors for a solid number of years and paid their dues along the way, versus those who merely got their job due to who the know and not what they know. I figure if you're a master distiller and others who aren't in the business can out-taste or out-nose you, then you're unqualified for the job. If I see a "master distiller" who is in their mid- or even late-20s, that's a red flag as to their qualifications. I'm betting the weekend custodian who out-nosed and out-tasted the suits was never promoted to master distiller. Was wondering the other day, has anyone ever added tonic water (instead of regular water) to a whiskey to open it up? Not a cocktail, but just when you go to add your 1 ml or 1 teaspoon or whatever, you use tonic water instead of regular water. Wonder what that’s like. I figure the effervescence would open it up quicker but I’ve never done it. Will have to put tonic water on my list and give it a decent go.
@inuitplus
@inuitplus Жыл бұрын
Tonic water is flavoured sparkling water. It should be better to add still water (preferably unchlorinated spring water). Unflavoured sparking water would remove the mouth feel, esp of better "oily" whisky.

A couple of points I can relate to. My wife doesn't drink whisky but when we nose a new bottle she finds far more aromas than me. Secondly, Jura could or probably should be far better than it is. The body and flavours are there but it doesn't quite fulfill it's potential. Shame really.

No really, don't buy me one of those, and not a bottle of Octomore, preferably not the 13.3 release. Or a bottle of Ledaig. I am totally clueless. Bourbon?? What's that. Nope. Don't buy me that. 😉
