Beautiful. After researching for days and sleepless nights through oversaturated and underdelivering markets for an honest, distinct and delicious single malt variety I have yet to taste, I finally arrived at this. And it is now on its way! Oodles of thanks for your thorough, unrivaled presentation.

Drinking this now for the first time while watching this. It's a chameleon whisky, I can't believe how much the taste is evolving since I poured it, now ~25min in. The cask is dominant, but not overbearing. Excellent balance and subtlety of flavours.

Glengoyne is such an underrated distillery which is just fine by me. The 21yr is my favorite sherry malt an absolutely delicious, elegant, dangerously drinkable dram. I would like to try the 25yr one day but in the $100-150 USD range I have found none better.

My first bottles were in the $110-120 usd range 7-8 years ago today I’m sadly seeing $225+ locally. Inflation is real so be sure to stock up on your favorites. On another note, my taste and experience keeps growing so if Glengoyne isn’t affordable I’m finding many equally enjoyable integrity alternatives….

I fully agree with you, Ralfy! Give it a drop of water and a lot of time and it's a very, very fine sherried dram (without the sherry influence killing the distillery character). This one won my malt of the year 2014 award and your review fully confirms me in my choice. Cheers!

I had a dram of the much more affordable glengoyne cask strength at my artesian beer pub. The nose and arrival were exactly how you described the 21yo, toffey fruitcake pineapple etc. I enjoyed it over 45 minutes or so, adding water until it revealed itself fully, then letting it devellope over time. Using all the tools I learned from you I turned my first glass of a highland single malt into my richest experience to date. Thank you very much, I will try the 21yo so I can see what kind of impact maturation has on the devellopment and finish. What should I try next from the highlands?

Great review as always ralfy. Glengoyne was the first single malt that opened the door for me into this world about 8 years ago. Ralfy dear malt mate. Please dont worry (If you do worry..I hope not cause you really dont have to mate) about Glen Elgin 12 video. Ralfy, You gave the 18 a high mark. Enjoying it now but def influence from the spirit, taking 2 months to calm down, still a bit hot. Obvious great quality in there, but not close to as enjoyable as Glendronach. Does the 21 have a bigger mouth feel?

its nice that this one isnt that expensive for being exclusively 1st fill (in central europe at least). and the old 17 is still around in some shops. problem with Glengoyne is that single cask versions and the 25yo seem to be amazing but are horribly expensive. in terms of age for the price i mean. so far ive bought only one of their single casks. i would gladly buy the 25 if it was CS. Ralfy do you have some of the GGs that were selcted by the staff? i.e. Duncan's Choice ?

Awesome review. I am a fan of GlenGoyne. I found for the price locally and the flavor it was hard to beat. But I have not entered into the world of 20+ year old whiskeys because of their price. Ralfy - are there 2-3 single malts that are 20+ years old that you would recommend that wont break the bank?

***** True, most whiskeys of that age will not be cheap, but there is a wide range in price for 20+ year old whiskeys. I would be open to a 'spurge' purchase as a celebratory gift, but if I am going to spend that much would like to know that I am getting my monies worth. In my area I've seen Laphroaigs, Bunnas, and Springbanks in excess of $500.

22:15 and following: I love that side of you Ralfy, the crypto-mystic. I used to, BTW, be in the LSD - Ayahuasca - camp, as well as in the meditative camp. The latter led me to see, just like you do, that the mindful engagement with direct sense perception already contains elements of those more forceful and/or profound endeavors. And if one knows the basic ground, then engaging with sip of whisky or a smile to a neighbour can be just as profound a step on the path and just as tantric as yoga postures were before they became a matter of fashion and self-optimization. I know you are a crypto-rebel, a leftie mystic and hence a brother. Ralfy...most if not all of the CompassBox products are blends or vattings of one type or another, so for us here at the Maltbar, they do not fall within the category of NAS hence CB gets a pass on our 2015 NAS single malt boycott. Having said that, CB OakCross maltmates has a Be-uuuu-tiful profile. 43%/ natural colour/unchillfiltered! & this is rite from the new open bottle no oxygenation at all - simply superb & I suspect will get even better as the ratios shift [O2 : Spirit] On Specials at the State-owned Wine and Spirit stores @ $46...terrific buy after some underwhelming Irish whiskeys. So yep run dont walk...Find it Get it Savour it...you will not be dissatisfied nor disappointed w/the current CB OakCross at this point in time (Mar 2015) CBOC could use a WR Ralfy, really could! 89/100 slainte.

interesting that you say that. Glen Garioch is my personal favourite. until the mid 90s their spirit was peated. east highland Whiskies a la Lochside, North Port and Glen Garioch have (had) a great austerity to them which not everyone likes. Glen Garioch especially often has minerally notes which are kinda off putting for others, but amazing for me. i had the Glen Garioch 1998 renaissance 3 months ago (unpeated vintage), yet even if unpeated it still had a great "take it or fuck off" austerity to it. and besides, it is not so highly sought after ,so i can take my time as i collect bottle after bottle. it is a great advantage to be fan of a distillery that is more or less overlooked by the masses.
@Mooseydog
@Mooseydog 10 жыл бұрын
Antoine, I thought I was the only fan of Glengarioch and now that I know you are around there are two confirmed supporters of the distillery. One thing that you mention in your response is about the 1998 Renaissance offering which has not made it here to the states as of yet that I know of. I am so hopeful that it will eventually make it over here because we here in the state of Maryland cannot receive alcohol in the mail. I mean I suppose it is possible to get it mailed covertly, but that would not be wise over here as everything nowadays is scanned. So when it does come out here I plan to try her out. Also I have to say that the Glengarioch 12 has ironically come down in price at one county liquor establishment and when it is on sale and I am working as i am currently unemployed, it goes on sale for $39 (26.42 British Pounds)US Dollars so in the past I had stocked up, but only one bottle left.

Walt Whitman - When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer, When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me, When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them, When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room, How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick, Till rising and gliding out I wander’d off by myself, In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time, Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars.

Lot of physics in the last three reviews (time, space, star material). Perhaps you could add "Malty momentum moments" to the list of malt mentions?

Attention Ralfy: I have fired off a message to you that should be in your youtube inbox. This can be checked by clicking the icon on the top right, entering your creator studio, and selecting community on the left tab. I mention this becuase youtube keeps changing things around and it took me a solid 15 minutes to figure out how to check my messages after the most recent changes. I was hoping to hear back from you and possibly to hear a response to the question(s) I posited in the message. I am a huge fan, adore every single one of your videos ( I have seen them all!!!), and wish you the best. Please get back to me whenever you have a chance.
