Hi Ralfy I'm really pleased that you have got to review a single malt from my absolute favourite distillery.I'm 60 years old and been drinking single malts since my late teens and have had not all of them by any means but as you can appreciate over a 40 yr period, quite a few! This also includes lots of expensive, full on cask strength , unchill filtered, natural colour bla bla bla. Well after all these years and many brands , Glen Moray stands as my number one and has never ,ever disappointed me.What I particularly like is their honesty, transparency and if you contact them they always answer you and the fact that all their single malts are matured onsite in their warehouses. A truly superb single malt that deserves far more recognition than lots of other brands.

The SMWS actually bottles Glen Moray quite frequently. Most of the time they are also excellent. This from a Glen Moray aficionado, who had the first encounter with it in 1984 ...

16:46 flies under the radar for sure but a steady distillery that rarely fails to deliver. Warehouse editions are very special indeed.

So glad you liked it Ralfy ! Somewhat undervalued single malt, but great whisky for lot of reasons which you mentioned !

Hello! Following you since 2013, year when I formally started my travels in this wonderful world of single malts and spirits. I also got your first book (I liked a lot). I bought this bottle a few months ago in my favorite Texas chain store, because of my very good experience with the NAS Classic, and the very good price for an 18 yo. single malt. What a pleasant surprise! You can not be more correct saying this a whispering honest whisky, for a quiet fresh evening. Recommended to experienced drinkers to appreciate it in full. Cheers!

Spent a lovely afternoon recently on the Glen Moray distillery tour. They really have got their act together.
@farshadp61148 ай бұрын
Greeting Mr Ralfy, just an update, I bought it this afternoon and now having a sip. It is a very, very good, affordable single malt . Left it in the glass for 20 mins, had a sip, added a little bit water and left it again for 10 mins. Wow. Cheers to you and all single malt lovers.

I’m falling into the (embarrassing) camp of having moved on beyond Glen Moray. However was so impressed with the honesty (mentioned already) of the distillery and staff when I visited. I am encouraged to re visit!! Thank you

Never had a Glen Moray. The only one available in Norway at the moment are “Glen Moray Private Edition When Scotland meets Spain” for 168 GBP. Not going to bother with that one 😉

I’ve cracked Ralfy’s new scoring system. Just take what you think his old score would have been and subtract exactly 3 points. Guarantee this would have been an 87 in the good old days, I could see it in his eyes 👀

Hello Ralfy! Here in Norway a version of Glen Moray is/was available at our duty free shop at the airport: GM 12 yo Elgin Signature, non-chill filteret, 48%.... Its quite a good deal, I think. Cheers!

I’ve grown to be quite a fan of Glen Moray. I think it will be a compulsory stock on my bar. It’s super cheap in my market and I think the varieties are excellent palette trainers, and quiet daily sippers in their own right. Great video. Thanks!

Greeting Mr Ralfy, and thank you for another informative review. I was given a few times those entry-level Glen Moray, and they didn't impress me until this review. It is very cheap down here, just under 150. A very similar thing happened to Glenmorangie 18 year old. I bought a few for $130 from Costco, and now, after 2 years, you can't find it under $250. I am hoping to get this Glen Moray next week. I bought a bottle of Tomatin cask strength and noticed that it needs a lot of water over time to make it enjoyable. Last night, I blended it with Laphroaig select cask, and it turned out very nice. Have a nice week.

I recently received this from a friend as well as 2 bottles from Balblair a17 and 15. The Glen Moray is just as you described. Deliciously subtle, with deep rich flavours that keep you wanting to nose and appreciate it. I would buy a case if I could find it.

I'm a fan of this one and of the distillery in general the supermarket level stuff really is only a snapshot of what they're capable of. Regarding their peated whisky, the production was started specifically for blends however some spirit does get given to cask strength handfills at the distillery in various different cask types and they're usually very very good while being very affordable too with plenty of character. Keep an eye on the upcoming Warehouse releases, one will be their first more widespread release of a cask strength peated expression.

I personally also always add a bit of water to my whisky. To compare apples to apples, I add about 10 drops of water to my dram of 12 year old Glen Moray. One time, to test the experience, I took a sip of whisky without adding water. The whisky was unrecognizable. It was bitter, woody, like green wood sap bitter. Then I added my 10 drops of water and it almost instantly brought out the creaminess and the fruitiness.

If I recall right, Glen Moray used to provide the RAF some 10,000 special bottles of Scotch whisky through RAF Lossiemouth. It cost 10 Quid in 1989. Don't know when it stopped.

This 18 is a belter. As Ralfy sais, the Glen Moray brand is often overlooked as supermarket scotch. The bog standard Nas 40% classic bottling punches with malts 3 times the price.

In the US 4-5 years ago this brand was VERY cheap… maybe the cheapest single malt I knew of in shops in my area. It’s since seen the same inflation that has crippled America over the last 3 or so years. Hopefully that changes.

I've found Glen Morays pretty enjoyable and reasonably priced. In my neck of the woods prices for scotch malt whiskeys have gone up about 30% in a few years, and many are just not worth buying any more. So I'm not doing it unless it's something really interesting or a good deal. I'll rather go for armagnac for example, which has not gone up nearly as much, in some cases not much at all.

I found myself having a hard time spending time with my 46% whiskies these days. I can't play with water the same way I can do with cask strength. How can one enjoy a 46% giving it's well deserved respect?

I am sure this is a ''fine" dram, but when one has to "search" to find flavors and enjoyment, it's not my ball game. I am waiting till we get great drams of yesteryear. Got enough of the old stock to get me through a few more years. If an 18 year old 47.8% decent distillery doesn't jump out, and make you search for the "excellence", then I am simply not interested. BTW, good and fair review.

Its a competent budget whiskey. Its good not great for the age. I've had plenty of the whole range and as a pauper with a prince's taste, what I usually do is save up for a more complex whiskey. I do buy them now and again but once you have the real good stuff, the reality is you always compare. Im not knocking it, I like it and would recommend it gladly as a starter or an all rounder non offender. Easy sipping.
