Rallycross Celebrates 50 Years

Rallycross was born on 4th February 1967.
This 48 minute video shows highlights from the past 50 years of European and British Rallycross with interviews from some of the sports top drivers taken at the Retro Rallycross 50 year anniversary celebration at the Autosport International show in January 2017, includes footage from the Live Action arena.

Great fun to hear my dad Colin Howard commentating - John Welch & he built on the cars that Martin Schanke (a real gentleman and a man I have known since childhood!) developed and in the early 80s 2.4secs to 60 was on the cards. So many great people - Gary Bland, Colin Parry-Williams, Hans Te Pas - go and look these guys up, not just on KZbin!

Pretty sure that was the Ford Capri with a Furguson 4WD system driven by Stan Clark..

Sadly I can't find anything at all about the 3 litre 4WD Ford Capris which were in Rallycross at the end of the 60s or early 70s. I remember them saying that they did 4 miles to the gallon!

My Dad used to take me to watch Rallycross when it first started, that Lotus Europa that you can see when John Taylor starts to speak was later covered in Velvetex,basically gave the car a velvet ,furry kind of finish,which amazingly (not) didn't catch on,I think the driver was Paul somebody. I still remember John Taylor racing that Volvo,not the most outlandish racing car I've seen,I used to know someone who aurocrossed an Austin Westminster!! I remember seeing Graham Hill ,Roger Clark and Paddy Hopkirk. We used to watch the club events as well,even without the big names it was always entertaining.

@@dave8204 what do you think to today's offerings. Like wrc the cars are quick and hi tech but are completely void of any soul or character and are therefore, to me, boring

@@paulnutter1713 I agree entirely Paul, back then spectators could relate to the cars on the track and there were some very talented clubmen that could take on the big boys and at least give them a very good run for their money..I only really watch the Touring Cars these days,prefer the Bike racing now.
