Ralph Ellis: Why are so many famous biblical characters MISSING from the historical record?

Today I spoke with Ralph Ellis, a historian and author who has spent more than three decades searching for secular similarities and parallels between the disciplines of history and theology.
We briefly discussed his background, and then dove into many topics, including:
• How the Hebrews were actually the Hyksos, who did exit Egypt and conquer Canaan.
• How the Garden of Eden was based on the Egyptian garden of Aten, and the fascinating history of Pharaoh Akhenaten and Queen Nefertiti, who were major players in the move toward monotheism, as they worshipped Aten, the sun disc.
• The fact that neither the characters of Jesus and Paul are not attested in the historical record, and what that implies regarding the major cover-up of their true identities, including the kingdom of Edessa.
• How the Gospels and Acts represent historical events and people, but 40 years later than Christians are taught.
• The theological and academic blindness that keeps people from seeing alternatives to what they've been taught, and how the issue is not just what people DON'T know, but what they WON'T know.
Many thanks to Ralph for the many ways he sheds light on important issues and shares insightful historical connections. His work inspires me more than ever to dig into history.

Listening to Ralph Ellis talk about his early life is like listening to myself. CofE primary school, an atheist by age 8, thrown out of Sunday school for asking too many questions (or "upsetting the other children" as it was put to my parents). A very interesting discussion. Thanks for posting it.

Much respect to you for asking questions that much. So sad that people who claim: "I am pure, nothing to hide, am honest, sins confessed, clean, and presenting you with the whole truth" could be so unwilling to listen/answer questions from a child. What does your sunday school think of Jesus astounding the teachers of the law in the temple at 12 with his questions?

Uhm. There are no credentials to be found that Ralph Ellis is a historian. He can be your favorite guy all you want, but do not say he is a historian. In fact, he's far from being one. He prides himself that because he is independent from theological and educational establishments that this allows him to tread where others do not dare (false), and that he has discovered many new historical and biblical truths (false as well). He belongs in the camp of pseudoscientists as far as I'm concerned. Compare this with Jean-Pierre Houdin, who developed a whole way of how the pyramid of Giza were build, providing a nice addition to the theories as a whole, without even having visited the pyramids. To say that you have to visit the places in order to build a hypothesis or theory or to understand, is just not true... Ralph thinks you have to, while JP Houdin clearly proved this wrong. I do not descredit the value visiting the sites bring, by any means, but Ralph is not entirely correct here. It might have helped that JP Houdin IS an architect who saw the buildingproject of the pyramids as a challenge. Whenever you have someone telling you that "they do not want you to know", be very careful to whatever you are willing to accept to what else this person has to say in that same setting. What Ralph does is making assumptions and creating links because they seem fitting and builds one that through basically repeating the process, without proper and verifiable usage of evidence/sources. It's like taking the average of averages. It is a misrepresentation. Since you are a major in history and literature, I sincerely hope you will not make that same mistake.

@Bluesruse
@Bluesruse 8 ай бұрын
@@Rain-Dirt You don't need "credentials" to be a historian, or a scholar of any kind. Bit of a black and white comparison there about visiting historical sites, and not a really valid one either. I mean, can visiting a historical site give you better perspective on matters? Maybe. Is it necessary? Maybe not. What disqualifies Ralph as a "historian" in your mind, specifically? His methodology? I get the sentiment; as plenty of New Testament scholars keep masquerading as "historians", even though their methodology is safely in pseudoacademics and their bahvior in general anathema to intellectual honesty. Scholars of Homeric literature are fine scholars of literature, but who you don't see trying to pull _unquestionable_ historical facts from their work. So, there's some validity in being "independent" when it comes being any sort of scholar whose interests come little too close to the religious sentiments of certain religion(s).

@@sv8156 Can you point out exactly where in my post to 'Seeker of truth' that I asserted or implied that (s)he should accept 'my' truth? So that is your first dishonest assertion. Atheist's don't have any philosophies that are flawed because they don't have any philosophies. That is a strawman and you should know better. So that is your second dishonest assertion. I assume you don't believe in Unicorns, do you have any philosophies on the subject? How does 'you' physically being in a country that Ralph visited debunk his argument? Is that your third dishonest assertion? Are you going to answer my question from your response on the other thread? Or are you going to dishonestly ignore it? "THERE IS NO MEDICINE FOR DISHONESTY", If you get my drift!
@sulas548
@sulas548 3 жыл бұрын
@@sv8156 You might be confident but you are still wrong. There is no ''my' truth and 'his' truth there is only truth, if you have some information that will back up your assertion that 'your' truth is 'the' truth I would love to hear it. I make no assertions or claims about the truth I simply reject your claims to the truth due to lack of evidence. An Atheist is NOT someone that believes there is no god. An Atheist is someone that has NO belief in a god. They are intrinsically different and your position is a strawman. An Anti theist is someone that states there is no god. Please learn this and don't make this mistake again. It is very tiresome having to educate theists all the time. Condensing Ralphs studies down to a sentence about tourists is absurd and disingenuous and frankly puerile. So again you did not answer the key question so I will ask it again; Can you tell me the exact method that you 'personally' used to verify that anything in Genesis is factually and objectively true? In fact why not do the whole Bible while you are at it. Please don't quote from the book itself as you cannot use the book to prove the book, that is what the Muslims do with the Quran and I doubt you believe them. You will need to give me some outside source that verifies that the contents are actually true. Can you do that?
@sulas548
@sulas548 3 жыл бұрын
@@sv8156 I am sure you hold no beliefs towards the existence of Thor, Zeus and Poseidon. By your flawed argument you therefore disbelieve in them and therefore you refuse to believe and you reject them which means you have an inability or refusal to accept something is true or real. Does that make those three gods real? This is very a sloppy argument. Atheist do not reject god, it is not possible to reject something that does not exist. Ironically I am fairly confident that you outright reject and disbelieve in all of the other 10,000 + gods that have been worshipped by mankind throughout history. I on the other hand just very simply reject the claims of those worshippers including your claims due to lack of evidence. Your arrogance that your particular nasty little god has some exception from my rejection of your claims is just pure conceit. Why do you think that the god of the society, and point in history, that you grew up in has some special status? If I were to take the baby 'you' back in time to 10th century Norway you would grow up believing with utter certainty that Odin was the only true 'chief' god. You are simply a packaged product of your society. It is very annoying when YT delete posts, I generally write them somewhere else and paste them in as I can then paste again if they are deleted. Can you try again as this question is fundamental to the core of your beliefs and if you don't have a valid answer then you don't have a valid reason for making your claims. I have a lot more interest in 'how' and 'why' you came to believe what you do rather than 'what' you believe.

40:44, 1:15:33 - Finally, he unveils the key to the entire Bible: ASTROTHEOLOGY. I remember when I first heard the term back in 2008 or so, I thought the entire idea was bollocks and completely insane. But then I started researching, and researching, and researching some more, and after 12 + years intense research and study, I'm completely convinced ASTROTHEOLOGY and SIDEREAL ALLEGORY is the entire typological, symbolic, emblematic, and syncretistic underpinning of all of the Judeo-Christian scriptures; and not only them, but most of the scriptures of all the religions of the world. Once you "get it", the scales fall from your eyes, and you have true understanding. "Let him that hath eyes to see, let him see..." P.S - 59:49 "Aramaic is the daughter of language Egyptian, it's the same language." Finally, someone else "got it". 😀 Additionally, Yahweh is the Moon god, EL is the Sun god, Shaddai is Seth/Set (Satan), the Adon/Aten/Eten is Akhenaten's supreme "God of Light" (Solar Based), borrowed by the Israelites, garden of Eten (Eden) , etc. And 1:20:53 He backs up the the insightful work of Joseph Atwill in his groundbreaking book."Caesar's Messiah". 1:30:54, 1:32:31 - Josephus Flavius was Saul/Paul, amazing. So much here! And just WHO is this "Jesus Character" (Bar Kamsa / King Izas Manu of Edessa)? 1:56:11, 2:35:13. Just brilliant, critical thinking Ralph. 🙂👍 P.P.S. - Dearest Wonderful Chris, you nailed it here - 2:28:23 - people really do not know WHAT they're really "worshipping" or what/who is actually talking to them "in their heads" when they think it's "their Lord Jesus". Truly psychologically frightening when you think about it! The real story 2:28:52. At any rate, thanks a million Bro! This was a truly a lightning bolt show for me! 🤗👍❤

That Jesus isn’t in the historical records says a lot to me. But if he was a powerful king married to Mary Magdalene, who was the richest Queen ever, with a dowry worth billions in our money, then not finding him in the historical records is a lot weirder and a lot more of a stretch!

I came across Ralph several years ago and I have to say, he makes sense. It's discouraging though because unless believers are willing to open their minds we'll never be able to get through to them. They are a closed book, they have the Truth, they have the greatest god and "paltry" evidence (such as Ralph's) makes no difference. It wasn't until I started asking hard questions, listened to the opposing side, and applied logic and reasoning and didn't lower my standards for evidence that I came around. I had to put my love for Jesus aside and look at Christianity from an outsider perspective (John Loftus Outsider Test for Faith). Sadly, most people aren't willing to do that.

This is the most sensible explanation I’ve ever heard for the story of Jesus. I’m willing to accept a 30-40 year time difference to line up those events. Right on. I am a preacher’s kid turned atheist. My 13 year old daughter and I started reading the Bible together. Programs like this help me place the Bible in a rational, historical context. I read the story to her, and get her reaction. We go over any basic related theology or stories, and then we talk about it rationally. I’m looking forward to sharing these ideas With her when we start talking reading about Jesus. Thank you so much for doing what you do. ❤️

Ralph is amazing. Note that the "40 year" chronological chasm is no numerical coincidence either. Indeed, 40 plays a very prominent role in both astronomy/astro-theology (days between the 8 cross quarter days (the same 8 points of a solar wheel and/or compass/cardinal rose); 8 x 40 = 360 days of lunar year, the Flood rained for 40 days and 40 nights, Jesus was in the wilderness for 40 days, 40 (years/days) in Sinai, etc....) The Bible is just like a three card monty con game. Everything is a "perfect" lie and once you know how the trick is done, you can spot it every time.

What Ralph has come up with complements what my father and I have been researching for a long time. We have left the Church's storytelling after 35 and 50 years of experience of the sharpest thing you can participate in regarding the enchanting world of theology and showing churches. My father and I realized a lot of years ago that we need to start over and question everything. Now it seems that a lot is still buried and what is available as "truth" narrative in open days is kind of the opposite way. The king of Edessa Jesus-Izas was very rich. Saul-Josefus certainly seized everything when he took down Jesus from the cross. As one of the richest men, he could then buy heavily positions in Rome. Ralph also highlights the Jews' heaviest descriptions of history. Here it becomes extra interesting because my rabbinical friends actually say that many things are not historical in the Torah. More of philosophical lessons type. Well I respect the Jews but Ralph have my attention.

This interview confuses me. One year ago, this channel posted an interview with Dennis MacDonald who presents pretty compelling arguments that swaths of the bible are repackaged Greek myth. I then run across this earlier video posted a year prior. So which is it? Concealed identities, conspiracies and motivations, time inaccuracies, regurgitated myth or a combination of all of the above?

I'm afraid I went a bit on already refuting Kevin Love below 😊. Just wanted to express my thanks to Harmonic Atheist for giving Mr. Ellis a platform to speak out. Whether right or wrong on everything Mr. Ellis proposes, our knowledge (or what we believe it is) needs to be challenged and questioned in order to progress. I was amazed at how little you find on the internet of reactions within academics to the ideas of Mr. Ellis. I think one would find a lot more if his theories were so easily dismissible. What little I found is one or two accredited historians say that he is wrong...and that's where it stops. Most articles are copies of that, as so often happens in media. A bit more from some Christian bloggers, who equally discredit Richard Carrier and Robert Price as pseudo-scholars (the latter not having the correct Ph.D's from the correct religious institutions... go figure). As if you need to be an engineer to drive a car. Basically what I found as "counter-argumentation" was that if you're not a Christian (believing that Jesus is the god who sacrificed himself to himself to save us from the punishment he inflicts upon us if we do not sacrifice to him), you don't have the mental capacity to investigate the bible. The irony... I tried to dig into the Huqoq mosaic a bit...but indeed, almost all articles copy from each other and reiterate that the depiction of the "controversial figure" is "a Greek commander, thought to be Alexander (the Great)". So who is thinking that? Apparently, the main source for this view is Jodi Magness, head of the Huqoq excavations. Admittedly, she does not state this as fact, but the proposition seems to have taken a life of its own as fact the more it is copied into other articles. Even as a proposition I could debate this. a) First, Alexander the Great is almost always depicted as clean shaven (a bearded Alexander the Great only becomes apparent in iconography in the Byzantine era) and for good reason: Alexander wanted to emulate the demigod Heracles and would therefore have condemned any depiction of him with beard as it went against his own propaganda. Not that the artisans of the Huqoq mosaic could not have deviated from this, but if they wanted to depict Alexander the Great, there is no reason why they would have given him a beard and go against every known depiction of him in Antiquity. Doing so would make identification of the figure as Alexander practically impossible. b) The war elephants: once again, the mosaic builders might simply have gotten it wrong, but Alexander would never have met the Jewish High Priest (as the scene is proposed to depict) while in possession of war elephants, as he could only have acquired them at the earliest after the battle at Gaugamela. which occurred after his conquest of Syria-Phoenicia, Judea and the surrender of Egypt. He would never set foot in the Levant again. If the alleged meeting of Alexander with the Jewish High Priest happened at all, it would not have included war elephants. c) I'm not claiming that I have seen all the depictions of Alexander the Great from classical antiquity, but if this a depiction of Alexander the Great then it is the first one ever I have seen where he is wearing a purple cloak. This is either an anachronism inspired by Roman iconography or it simply is not depicting Alexander the Great. d) I agree with Mr. Ellis that the figure in question is wearing stockings (color difference legs - hands) Very atypical for a Greek soldier. e) the "Left Ear adornment": I cannot make out if this a Jewish payot or a jewelry piece, but it is definitely not possible to relate this to Alexander the Great, Maybe a later Seleucid ruler who adopted Persian styles? To me it looks like a Hellenistic (hence post-Alexander) Parthian / Babylonian / Osroenean / Armenian commander/ruler. f) If the scene is depicting the visit of Alexander the Great to Jerusalem and his submission to Yahweh in the Temple (as recounted by Josephus Flavius), then why are the companions of the alleged high priest in the scene all drawing their swords? And why would all these priests even be carrying swords? In conclusion, Jodi Magness' equation of this figure with Alexander the Great is strenuous at best. On the other hand, identifying this figure as Izates Manu (Jesus), while not impossible, is imho as speculative. All we can assert is that this figure was an important political character. [Mr. Ellis is right that history is not written about the poor and working class plebeians, but about rulers]. From my end, honesty compels me to conclude that I cannot identify this character. And oops...got Carrier-ed away again 😊 Thanks for the vid...looking forward to more debate and info
@RalphEllis

Jodi Magness sold the ‘Alexander’ identification to Nat Geo for cash. Lots of cash. Nat Geo did not want this character to be ‘bar Kamza’ as they could not sell that. This is history for the highest bidder. R

Being a History Teacher, of course there is appreciation for Ellis' research. In my research in recent years; I've read a few of his books years ago and enjoyed them. My note is not only about Izras but about the Hyksos aka Shepard Kings under the astrology sign. After they were dealt with to leave Egypt; and took with them possibly the power source of the pyramids, (besides the jewels and gems) did they then disperse to become the chameleon Karzarian Jews today? Firstly, my synopsis, they dispersed into the seas Phonesians aka the Pirates, to Scotland ( See "Scota...), to Italy the Venetians, to the satanic forces today who still worship Egyptian icons. Hidden as Karzarian Jew who are editors of Wikipedia. Josephus Flavius, the Jewish Historian for the Roman's, who was instrumental in writing the Bible and confusing the timelines, and names of real peoples in biblical history using different languages to name them. So much info about how Rome thought in political terms. And, Rome gave Egyptian icons Roman names.

Yes! Did you notice how comically clever it is how Titus Flavius, after killing the "Jesus" in the sea battle in Wars of the Jews, takes on the identity of that "Jesus" in the Gospels: John 21? It seems there are many that were calling themselves "Jesus" but the real "Jesus"(Savior) had to be Titus Flavius. So in reality, Christians are unwittingly worshipping Tiitus Flavius as the "real Jesus"; the "Lord". What did you think of the chapter The Puzzle of the Empty Tomb?

A lot of what Ralph Ellis is saying here is also covered in Wilson and Blackett's book Moses in the Hieroglyphs, and other works, for example the identification of the Egyptian Hyksos Pharaohs with the Israelites, and the identity of Mary Magdelene as the daughter of Cleopatra and an heiress in her own right. I had not realised the significance of the passage he mentions concerning Joseph and his brothers talking about shepherds and cattle farmers, but in the context of the zodiac it makes perfect sense. However, much of what is currently understood about Ancient Egypt is based on incorrect translations, which has resulted in a huge chronological muddle. Academia, as is their wont, are so wedded to these hasty 19th century theories they refuse to admit that Champillon may have been wrong.

There’s no doubt that the early stories in the Tanakh are folklore. Folklore usually has some historical basis and is retold to frame a narrative for a particular people or culture. The settling of Semitic peoples over many centuries in southern Egypt is verified historically including the analysis of skeletal remains. The expulsion of these people is likewise attested by history and skeletal remains. Anything more is speculation, however is strikingly parallel to the biblical accounts of the exodus from Egypt. I think that Ralph Ellis draws a long bow beyond this, however it is a good story that sells books…

Abel is the first martyr, both chronologically and textually. The murder of Zakarya son of Berekhya is recorded in the later chapters of Chronicles, which is the final book in the Tanakh. Reading the TNK from beginning to end, Zakarya son of Berekhya is the last martyr you will read about. So it is a first-to-last textual progression that Jesus refers to.

Ralph Ellis made an interesting point at timeframe 1:23:40 aboutJoseph of Aramatea. The point that he made about Jesus mocking someone with the exact words used in the Talmud in AD 60 is not as strong though, and he uses this as evidence that those words of Jesus would have been spoken later than AD 60. Why could this not also imply that since these same words were added to the Talmud in AD 60, that the Talmud was plagiarising words that had been spoken by Jesus in the 30 's and repeated by his followers?

The relocated city of Pi-ramases has been being quietly excevated for some years now in short season time frames (it is also farm land now) and lots of artifacts have been dug up that show it to be a Hebrew city not an Egyptian one. One of the biggest problems for biblical studies is that the bad pharaoh who ruled over them with an Iron fist was one of their own people not an evil Egyptian, there are also political ramifications for the area and the Egyptian government dont want Israel to make claim over the area and potentially lose the Sinai peninsula in any way to Israel, especially violently.

I'm having a helluva time trying to square this with the scholarly consensus -- among both Christian and secular scholars -- that the early proto-Hebrews were, in fact, originally just local hill people and Canaanites. Or that there was never a major influx of people into the land, and that pretty much the entirety of the Pentateuch is etiological myth, having its roots in older myths like the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Enuma Elish. Then there's this insane reliance on Josephus as being 100% reliable, when he is known to have included legendary events in his writings. And so much of this is based just on a couple lines about the relationship to the Hyksos?!?!? Add to that the conspiracy theory vibe, that people don't want to know, or that things were changed deliberately, and this is going downhill fast. I will watch to the end, but at this point -- about 1/2 hour in -- I'm not at all hopeful that I'm going to find this as all convincing. Closing note: Yep, pretty much what I expected.

I am just starting to work my way through Ralph Ellis' books, but have heard many interviews with him. He's a courageous and brilliant scholar and historian and the world owes him a debt of gratitude for bringing the biographical details of Jesus into the light. For me Jesus is the most profound and inspiring spiritual teacher there is. He's like William Wallace, Thomas Jefferson and Gandhi rolled into one, yet far beyond all of them. Ellis is interested in the story of Jesus as a man in the context of his culture rather than interpreting him from a spiritual standpoint, and that gives his work great clarity of focus and integrity as historic scholarship. Knowing the actual details of Jesus' life has blown my mind in some ways (good ones) and in no way diminishes my appreciation for him as a spiritual master. Rather it deepens it. It also makes me better understand the nature and extent of the Church's criminality in suppressing this information and turning Jesus into an asexual, apolitical, fatherless, demi-god. In my opinion, the importance of Ellis' work can't be understated or underappreciated. I am also glad I can get the books as paperbacks, I detest reading on a computer screen!

@@HarmonicAtheist Thanks for your reply, you bring up some points to consider. I think King Izas would have been a very highly educated man, as such he would have synthesized the wisdom of his time, including mystical traditions which is what's most interesting to me. As Ralph Ellis' work well demonstrates there is distortion in the canonized texts. I find it fruitful to read them with both skepticism and inquisitiveness. I think there is truth in them, and there's a lot that's that's twisted in a way I find objectionable. We have a few apocryphal texts to help round out the picture, and hopefully more of those will surface.
