I believe the fireplace is functional, not sure about London, but I’ve seen them with a fire lit in the NYC Madison Avenue store once

The store is as great an attraction as the clothing!
@DeadMallWalking3 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Maybe even more of an attraction since, honestly, there wasn't a ton in there that I could afford, lol.

It's nice seeing how the upper crust shops for once. Also: "If your five-year-old ever needs to launch a boat, this is where you gotta be" make me chuckle a bit.

This was interesting, had no idea RL had their own mini department store, It’s nice how you were seemingly left alone to browse and film. Surprised that such a huge store for one brand still exists at all, never mind in high rent central London, hope it can manage to keep going into the future.

I just had a GoPro strapped to my backpack, but I got kinda lucky that the place was pretty quiet. Did have a few "can I help you find anything?"s in the original video's audio, lol. Honestly, and I'll cover this more in a future video, I think a lot of big brands that have spots in central London only do so because...well, they're expected to! I think, in the wake of covid, that will change pretty quickly.

I love individual RL garments but in this environment, I get a feeling of claustrophobia and of brand overload.
@DeadMallWalking3 жыл бұрын
I get that. It’s sort of overwhelming thinking about how much it would cost if you just started picking up items there like you might in, say, a department store or a TK/TJ Maxx.

@@DeadMallWalking Or Goodwill. Here in Los Angeles, the thrift stores are full of gorgeous Ralph Lauren pieces (I can't imagine they would destroy their deadstock like some brands we know...). I have a closet full of Ralph's goodies. Very well-made clothing for men, but when I usually pay $6 tops for an Oxford cotton shirt, that seems about right. Retail is for folks who don't know any better, I think.

Definitely not worth the retail tag, but still becoming my favorite brand. It's just too classic. I can't imagine the rent for this building. They must be getting a lot of customers.

But, it IS worth the retail tag. I have a lot of Ralph Lauren in my wardrobe; maybe 85%. However, I don't have a massive wardrobe. Well, okay, I may have too many sport coats and winter jackets, but, let's not dwell on that. ....On second thought, it might help illustrate my point: While I may spend more buying RL product, it lasts forever. Some of the aforementioned jackets are 25 years old. And, yes, I still wear them. I have an RL sweatshirt my mother bought me when I was 13. It's boys XL and the sleeves are just the slightest bit too short on me now. But, I can still, at age 46, get away with wearing it sometimes. So, I don't need to have a ton of clothes. A select choice of each kind of garment and accessory is all that's required. Of course, it helps that, while some of these pieces are unique, they're not over-the-top fashion pieces that date themselves. I did have a few like that and had to retire them simply because they were so out of fashion. ('90s Polo graphics, anyone? Though, I do note they're coming back around again.) What I've started doing recently is buying used RL clothing; off eBay and Etsy. Over the past couple of months I've come into possession of some great RL sweaters and scarves for relatively cheap; one fair-isle cotton sweater is, well, amazing. I've never seen one like it before. But, again, if you look after an RL item, it'll be with you for a long time. These sweaters I've bought look brand new, even though they must be at least seven years old. One Polo Sport sweater I suspect IS from the 90s. But, totally wearable in 2022.

Call me unsophisticated if you like, but I didn't like the men's section. Seems way too cluttered, total attack on the senses. The women's section was a lot nicer still feels like the same issue is creeping in though. Loved the home section in the basement and the outside of the building.
@DeadMallWalking2 жыл бұрын
I definitely see your point! There's a lot of stock in there, and that's most obvious in the menswear section. I love the basement, as there seems to be a new setup down there every time I get over to London.

Some years ago when in NY I went to RL offices to drop off my CV as I was thinking of moving to NY. The girl at the desk was so nice, she served me a silver tray with tea and told me that Ralph would be down in a moment. I actually asked "Ralph who" !
@DeadMallWalking2 жыл бұрын
Haha! Love this story. Maybe they thought you were another Stephanie? (I'm guessing you didn't get the job, right?)
@TheFiown2 жыл бұрын
@@DeadMallWalking Who knows? I was told that Ralph was sorry to not be able to see me so I left, still under the charm of the decor. I left my CV at several designers like Donna Karen, Michael Kors etc but one of the HR people told me that in the US they HAD to give jobs first to americans unless the person seeking employ had some sort of training or talent that they didn't have in the US. I worked often with Americans in Paris who had no problem finding work and getting the right visa, it didn't seem fair at the time.
@DeadMallWalking2 жыл бұрын
@@TheFiown Oh well, sounds like you lived to try another day! Yup, I've encountered that rule as well - jobs need to be listed for a year, to give Americans a fair shot, before they can bring on international hires. But I think there are loopholes out there... Sounds like you made some headway in the industry anyway? Feel free to email me if you have any great stories about the space!

Did you know that the outlets are denigrating the status of Ralph Lauren and since 2014 its profits and sales fell and did not recover
