What really sucks about The Acolyte is that this could've been a show primarily focused on the Sith. We've seen stories like Plagueis and the Bane Trilogy explore this, and it would've been interesting to see some random guy/girl be introduced into the Sith and the 'evils' of the Jedi, kinda like a reversed mirror of Luke and Ben Kenobi in ANH.
@Phoenix0F89 күн бұрын
love this idea. also love the only line in the show that plays to it, when Qimir starts reciting the Sith Creed to Mae and she rolls her eyes and shuts him down. Just with one line subtly laying out a lot of her history of having Sith dogma drilled into her head to the point where she's just irritated by it. If they could have, y'know, demonstrated subtlety, cleverness or any amount of nuance in any other part of the show so that one scene wouldn't feel so lonely... that would've been nice

It blew my mind how the show seemingly got in its own way. It refused to carry momentum between episodes. It refused to stay focused on its own themes and plot. It refused to let characters not only show but atleast tell you who they were. It had such great ideas with the execution of a cucumber.
@VojvodaSloboda7 күн бұрын
quite literally the whole thing was a bad idea with even worse execution. Its a DEI quota to begin with so the art of film making gets put lower on the priority list. used as many possible old tropes for its characters. 0 compelling narratives, couldnt even make a compelling argument for the overarching point of 'internal struggle and the duality of man'. total failure on all fronts as a film or cinema. I think the episode title scheme was initially meant to reflect the split aspect of the show. What one has found, another has lost, justice and vengeance are two sides of the same coin, et cetera. Knowing the twins are a split consciousness lends some credence to this theory. Destiny was the episode where the twins were together, where Mei's(spelling?) actions led them down different paths. Going off this theory, Day and Night were supposedly meant to be one episode, but production issues (which this show was known for) ended up dividing it to fill the episode count. Without the random two-parter episode, the title scheme would've just continued as it was. Having the twins reunite in the finale and make a Choice to determine their Destiny means the one-word title functions there as well. Apologies if this seems barely coherent; I'm trying to make sense of the smallest aspect of a mediocre show lmao

Finally a reasonable review and critique of this show that doesn’t just scream “woke” and pin the show’s lacklustre quality on the fact a woman made it. Because realistically, women and people of colour being involved with this show had no impact on the quality of the writing or the presentation of it. There were some good ideas in The Acolyte and it contained a few highlights, but it just didn’t work out, which is a shame in my opinion. But at least we can count on Ralph to give a measured and grounded review 🙏
@habadasheryjones9 күн бұрын
Anti woksters are such a grift. It used to be a piece of media could just have a woman or black person in it without someone pissingtheir pants with anger. This blind regurgitation of their talking points at every trailer isn't doing them favors either. Do they think Warner Bros or Activision Blizzard are going to look at a bunch of neck beard chuds online yelling woke at every trailer that comes out and then go "We heard you and we'll be writing stories with nothing but generic honkies from here on out,"? Of course they won't. They take one look at people putting WOKE in a comment and dismiss it as general online nuisances and stay the path they're on. If anti wokesters want tangible things like better written characters in American blockbusters they should say so clearly instead of pounding their chest with online 4chan culture war malarkey. No one making big money creative decisions anywhere is listening to some ape type four letters with all caps.

It just blows my mind that this show cost 230.1 million dollars. Like where did that money go? Why is the story stretched so thin? For example, Arcane, a series that is 18 40-50 minute long episodes, only costed 250 million. It is more than double the length of the Acolyte, has an amazing art style that rivals the best animation, and has a plot oozing with nuance.
@cinespressotvok2 күн бұрын
Are you seriously comparing an animated show to a live action show? Also, the budget is 180 million
@isa_noodle2 күн бұрын
@@cinespressotvok The finalized budget for The Acolyte turned out to be 230.1 million. The 180 million number was the original budget. I think it is a fair comparison. Sci-Fi and Fantasy shows spend a ridiculous amount of money to have lackluster looking live action shows that would have been cheaper and better looking if they had just been animated. For comparison, the Avatar: the Last Airbender was 300k for the cartoon per episode vs 15 million for the live action per episode. The cartoon number has been adjusted for inflation. But if you must have a live action example, Andor cost 500k per minute vs The Acolytes 670k per minute. Andor blows The Acolyte out of the water in terms of visuals, storytelling, and technique. After a certain point, money won’t save a sinking ship. I am just curious why Disney keeps making risky ventures with Star Wars shows. On one hand, it’s nice to see them give relatively untested directors the helm, but maybe give them a smaller budget. It becomes sink or swim at that point, and a lot of great TV shows had rocky starts.

Everyone rejoiced. Then Andor happened, with a director who doesn't care about star wars and just wanted to tell a story in a world, and star wars was that world. and it was so good. praised to the heavens. Andor is the best star wars since the original trilogy! and then they... didn't keep doing that? they actually went back to the same kind of stories like Boba Fett and Ashoka that were just kind of... alright? here's some characters you remember from other stuff, here's some new ones that are ehn... sotries are ehn... why? why did they not take Andor as a lesson? It felt like an EU novel. Keep doing that, good stories with star wars as a SETTING. I don't care about inconsistent or changing force powers, every new chapter of star wars has added a new thing you can do with the force, and the eu made it obvious that some force users are better at certain parts of the force than others. I don't care about fan service tossing in cartoon characters or whatever to the live action shows, or celebrity casting. But please... start with a good story, then star wars-ify it

Who sent Hollywood a memo telling them to put EVERY black character in dreads or as we black people call them just “locs”? I used to like locs and now I hate them thanks to Hollywood. My son asked me recently if he could loc his hair and I was like “Umm….. no”.

4:54 I really wish we could find out whether it was executive meddling, writing room issues, or showrunner's ineptness that took what is a fairly decent adaption of Nabokov's "Lollapalooza"; elevated in quality only due to not being like Stanley Kubrick's, that served as a vehicle to normalize the "sensualization" and exploitation of under 18 females and lead to actual grooming of a child actress; or like Adrian Lyne's, that continued to normalize the "sensualization" and exploitation of under 18 females; and decided to put hot man abs into it.

The main reason I quit watching this show was I thought the whole twin thing was that the dead sister's ghost or something was possessing the main character and doing things that wouldn't, and since she was not in control, she doesn't remember any of it. I thought that was a REALLY cool idea and something new, only to find out "oh no, her twin is alive somehow and evil, the main character is actually innocent" and that was such a disappointing, predictable, and lame plot that I stopped watching. From what I've seen, it's like an aggressive 5/10, which doesn't sound too bad, but genuinely the WORST thing a Star Wars product can be is boring, and that's exactly what this is.

I actually did really like the acolyte, some of the stories and themes explored were really interesting to me and I related to them. Especially themes of sisterhood, loss, stuff like that. It wasn't the best show ever obviously. Lots of room for improvement. Good review, agree with lots of what you said! Happy to see an upload from you!
