Or the fact that their own family wouldn’t respect them, and getting respect from them should matter the most. Kind of sobering to see Tony’s family life inside the house, and the erosion of their relationships. Yeah by the end he still has his family. And they do come to love him. But to your point, it was interesting how violent and obsessed they were for respect on the streets, but back at home they don’t even have a loving respect based relationship with their own spouse and children. Pathetic.

Being a practicing doctor, it really grinds my gears when movies depict one of the most emotionally challenging moments, sharing the news of a relative's death, as a quick conversation in the hallway. I swear 99% of movie and TV Show doctors would be fired and lose their license. You get a room, you call the family in, you break the news, you let them take it in, answer any and all their questions, you can also leave the room to let them express themselves. You don't give them a damn pat on the back

The food bit is also important because it helps to humanize the characters. Italians have strong family values and the way they tend to show it is through food. So having them sitting down to a meal, preparing a meal, talking over food helps build depth and heart in the characters or inversely causes unease and tension when something fucked up is happening while they're eating or something. Like you follow a dude as he and his family make some pasta. It's all warm and sunny and they spend all day palling around, smooching their babies, corralling kids to keep them out the kitchen and then they sit down and some gangsters walk in and it's like a record skip. Suddenly things are tense. The gangsters sit down, they grab a plate, they eat, they say it's good but they're obviously not there for some spaghetti so you're just sitting there waiting for it and it goes on and on and the tension rises until....they get up to leave......and then they shoot the guy. The food is just as much a character in gangster films as the people who eat it, so not having it just sucks he soul out of scenes where it belongs.
@TDIfan2415 жыл бұрын
It helps show how a family works and acts around each other too. Is the table quiet? Family isn't close at all. Too loud? Probably a pretty hectic life style they live every day. A dinner scene is something everyone can relate to because everyones had a family dinner before. it helps you connect with the characters in a short time.

I wholeheartedly agree that food is one of the most important parts of mob movies and when done well, it really sells the hospitality of mafia families and just makes me wanna cook. This movie has none of that. Also I noticed the color pallette of lots of classic mob movies is very warm, inviting. It gets cold and green/blue when the characters are in a bad spot. This movie's coloration is always dull and grey and boring.

Using food in these movies is perfectly explained in goodfellas when tommy, jimmy, and henry show up at tommy's mother's house after clipping billy batts. HoldenNY22 Yes, if you watch the HBO production ‘Gotti’ with Armand Assante which was released back in 1996, you’ll see that his son was riding a gas powered ‘mini bike’ when he was hit by the car, and not a regular bicycle. Him riding the mini bike is really a true story. If you haven’t watched the production with Armand Assante, then you really should because it blows this garbage production with Travolta out of the water, and many times over! The Gotti movie from ‘96 was done so extremely well, and it’s too bad that it was just an HBO release, because had it been in theaters, then it would have definitely been a box office hit during that time!

Apparently, Warner Bros. took that as a challenge because they released this movie. And it made over $1 billion. It's now the highest grossing movie based on a DC property of all time, a record previously held by The Dark Knight Rises. You heard right, folks. Aquaman - fucking Aquaman - made more money than the goddamn Batman. Shows us for laughing at Aquaman, huh? Well, joke's on you, Warner Bros. We're still laughing cuz the Aquaman movie is a fucking mess. Actually, I do have to give some respect to Warner Bros. Of all the shared universes competing with Marvel, DC has had the most success. Financially speaking, at least. The movies aren't exactly, you know, good. But while I do think Aquaman is a terrible movie, I get why some people might like it. I can respect the movie for embracing its over the top nature. It feels like a Saturday morning cartoon that was given a bigger budget than it knew what to do with. And despite all the inconsistencies in tone and writing, I admit the movie would be a whole lot worse if it played everything completely straight. So it seems DC and Warner Bros. might be on the right path after their godawful Justice League movie. Aquaman was at least not nearly as boring and wasn't plagued with production problems. And that Shazam movie is actually really good, like, unironically. But we're not talking about Shazam now, so let's talk some more about Aquaman..."

Holy crap. Before I tell you, I wanna tell you that you used "Somewhere, beyond the sea" INCREDIBLY WELL in this review. This song was used in both Goodfellas and in Finding Nemo. Secondly, I think you've done a great job of ripping this movie apart. Absolutely fantastic.

“I even wore Gotti’s hair. The crew took it out of his coffin and made a wig out of some of it, although of course they had to put it back after we were done shooting the film. I could smell his corpse, I could feel his grease. It was actually quite haunting”. -John Travolta

I’m from Cincinnati and remember driving by them filming. Fun fact: I think the guy playing “bar thug #3” in the bar fight scene is on the board of trustees where I live.

The real reason Travolta took on this part?... He got to kiss men

This,in the hands of a good director and scriptwriter could have been a pretty cool gangster-drama.Imagine Scorcese making a Gotti movie.Hell,there's a HBO tv-movie,starring Armand Assante as Gotti which is pretty good. I mean,they had 44 producers on this movie and hired Pitbull to do the soundtrack,WTF?! I mean seriously,who hires Pitbull of all people,to write a soundtrack for a mafia-drama?!

Seems like they wanted worldwide success, so they hired Mr. Worldwide to write the soundtrack.
