The torque wars are ridiculous. The drivability and reliability are what buyers look for. I don't care which one is "faster". If you're buying an HD truck for speed, you're nuts. They are made for towing and hauling heavy loads and doing it well for a long time. That's the point. It is exciting to hear about a ZF mated to the Cummins HO. That should be a formidable combo.

There are many who believe that ZF makes the world's best transmissions. Of course, Cummins is legendary. Little boys grow into men wanting a Cummins diesel. So, I believe that this is a smart move. Arguably, Ram will have the best engine and the best transmission in their heavy duty trucks. It would be virtually impossible for them to build anything better themselves.

I ‘ve owned 5 Dodge trucks both 2500 and 3500 dually. 3 had the 5.9 Cummins and the other two the 6.7. The two 6.7’s were junk. One was High Output and the other regular. The 5.9 got excellent fuel and and were bulletproof we put over 250,000 miles on all three without any major issues. The 6.7 where in the shop too many times to count and the damn DEF systems all had multiple issues. Forget power they need to make the new engine more reliable and problem free. I got rid of both 6.7s before they had 80,000 on them.

I think ram was waiting until they had a better transmission to bump up the power. The 68RFE was okay, but never shifted really happy and kinda the same story with the Aisin unit in the HO version. They just didn’t drive anywhere as good as the competing. That and I trust the 68RFE about as far as I can throw it, which is pretty self explanatory. It’s way better than the old 4 speed, but under extreme duty, just doesn’t hold up.

Really how much power do you really need? All you need is GEARING! With a deep enough hole and ratio spread and decent flat torque curve. Somewhere around the 420 hp, @2,500 rpm’s with 1,150 lbs ft@ 1,600 rpm’s. With a clean but reasonable DEF system and exhaust system. With a very nice big gain in mileage being a key factor, no matter how it’s done, even if lower power is made, to get a HD to achieve 20 city 25 highway! That would shame the others that may reach the top of the Ike Tunnels long grade, but doing so at over 12 mpg! While maintaining legal speed.

I would like to see a G/T edition 2500, Ive seen the 1500 G/T edition, It has paddle shifters and a console mounted gear selector, and considering they’ve brought some things over from the 1500 to the 2500 I would love to have an 8 speed 2500 with paddle shifters. Only thing I would trade it for would be a 7 speed manual or the 8 speed diesel as a G/T edition, 100% would trade it in for one of those.

It might make more sense for Ram/Cummins to only have one, but I think from a consumer standpoint this is bad. Having some real separation in capability between the 2500 and 3500 series trucks makes sense. So then naturally having a smaller engine, focused on less cost (perhaps) but more importantly, fuel efficiency, would be a good thing. We don't need a 2500 with 2000 lb/ft of torque, that makes 0 sense. If you need more power than 800 lb/ft then hop into the 3500, that's literally what its there for. For the 2500, give me a smaller engine, and allow me to keep my total cost of ownership down (less def usage, less mpg, and whatever else is involved). Having an updated 8 speed across the board though, that is a good thing. I don't think this will help sales either, the Ram heavy duty looks stale, and it has the smallest cab. That needs to be adressed at some point very soon. If they had come out with an all new 5th gen heavy duty 2500, new cab, updated dimensions, 8 speed transmission, and a more efficient cummins at 800 lb/ft, that would be killer IMHO. Keep the 1000+ lb/ft monster for the 3500 where its actually needed.

Folks, the reason they are introducing a whole new motor is that when they designed the new block, they reduced weight to the tune of 75 pounds less than the previous cast iron blocks. Some of that weight reduction was done in and around the crankshaft journals. From what I understand the journals actually flex to an oval shape under load because the block doesn't have the "meat" in that area. This in turn causes oiling issues with the adjacent rod bearings. It throws a rod and knocks a hole in the side of the block. Trust me I have a 2023 with the new block and I plan on trading it ASAP and am none too happy that they have done this. I don't want to be in the middle of nowhere pulling a toy hauler and have to potentially put an oil fire out. The new material they use to make the block now is compacted graphite iron (CGI) and best I can tell was introduced in the 2019 models.

I have 2014 3500 standard output dually (68rfe) and pull a fifth wheel over 60% of its 102,000 miles. No tuner - stock size tires - I did take out the thermal block in the tranny lines and replaced with a pass through unit. I service the tranny with pan off fluid and filter change ( i know i am leaving several quarts in TC) every 33k. NO PROBLEMS except a fan pully bearing on the engine at 90k. Well...that damn Uconnect screen will sometimes wait two minutes to show up and come on and the factory Nav thinks I am in the ocean🙃. I have to say I have gotten my money's worth in 10 years and I can sell it for a fair amount over half what I paid for it. I LOVE the idea of a new rig but I am wary of the hydraulic lifters (compared to my solid lift cam) and they have become SO overpriced that I don't believe in ten years I will be able to get 60 plus % of what I pay today out of it. I love the content and I love the videos. But I just think new trucks are ridiculous. I ordered my 2023 Tradesman with the 6.4 Hemi and to me it has plenty of power. Sometimes too much because it's easy to speed and everything else .I've owned diesels and gas for the last 23 years. Most people don't tow they just fly up and down the interstate. I think we would have a better world if we went back to 230 horsepower big blocks lol! I think it's a waste of resources. But whatever. My 99 second gen V10 Dually is still my favourite truck to drive!! To me it it is a perfect balance.

2:16 Looking at that graphic, that ZF is “only” rated for 1,000 lb-ft. If the new engine will make more power than the current HO, will it support that much torque? I’m sure ZF will make variants, if that’s what it’ll be paired with.

Hi Alex! Great videos, very informative. Quick question, I am wanting to buy a 2500 Ram Cummins as I haul an enclosed trailer for my business with a 2015 Toyota Toyota currently. I have found some incredible deals on 2024 2500 Cummins models but it sounds like it might be worth waiting for the 2025 based on your video. I like the idea of better mpg's and more power. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I have a 2022 Ram 6.7L Cummings and I can unlock my doors using water on the door handle. They told me the only thing they can do is turn off my unlock sensor. Also I have 12 or 13 no starts and have had to call a tow truck 9 times. The crazy thing it's a brand new truck with me being the only owner. They have replaced so many things it's crazy sooooo I have a lawyer now and have filled lemon law so we will see what happens. If I could post a video of me unlocking my truck I would post it.

Exciting updates and they might now have the best powertrain, but they need to update the cab! It is tight for larger people inside, the passenger foot area is cramped, everything feels cramped compared to the Ford or GM. Also the back seat has no storage features like the others, or a flat foot area. Maybe they need to lift the cab a few inches to give it more room like Ford and GM?
@TheGettyAdventures
@TheGettyAdventures 4 ай бұрын
I was a little surprised they went with the same cab but when they didn't change it in 2019 with the new generation I think they are keeping it until the 6th gen which could be like 2030 lol 20 years of the same cab.

I talked about this in the video about the new ZF and I don't know if they have changed some components to allow it to take more torque or the pick up trucks being lighter could change that number up. I'm not honestly sure but it is something that caught my eye as well!

That ZF is far from bulletproof. Look at the Paccer labeled TX-8. Same with the PX7 and 9. That duty cycle is far from what any pickup will ever see. KW T180-480(19k-58k GVWR) and the Pete versions are the only places this transmission have been available, they are NOT selling better than the Allison in Paccars own products. Looking at the placement of the TCM is kinda scary, honestly.

@BrandonLeech
@BrandonLeech 4 ай бұрын
I don't think anybody knows yet what the actual technical revisions will be from the current engines, if there even are any. They might just be dropping the standard output version and doing a modest power bump on the current HO version and calling it "new and improved". The transmission I believe they have been working on for quite some time which is probably the bigger news.
