To anyone who would ask or mention it, yes, there is a recall for the the crankshaft sensor. No, it is not a proper repair. It is simply reprogramming the engine control module to continue running off the cam sensors when the crank sensor fails, so the vehicle doesn’t turn off while driving and cause an accident. They will not pay a tech to replace the reluctor ring, they just want to cover themselves and prevent injury/accidents. The part will still have to be replaced properly in the long run. Aside from the check engine light staying on, I would imagine drivability issues would still exist afterward, possibly limp home mode, etc, but I can’t say for sure.

Would it be easier to take the transfer case off or the def tank if ya have a stock truck
@tadsworkshop18 күн бұрын
@@kylphelps13 I never bother with the def tank. I try to take out the transmission and transfer case as one assembly, with the crossmember. If that is not practical for you, just do the transfer case first, then the transmission. Before you do that, there is a weight bolted to the transfer case - remove that first and throw it to the side. I never reinstall it. It’s for dampening noise/vibration at a certain frequency. Have never had any complaints about not reinstalling it.

Two most common things would be lift pump in fuel tank, or crankshaft sensor. Measure fuel pressure between lift pump in tank, and injector pump on engine. I have a video on this. Should be 55-60psi. If not, probably a failed lift pump or plugged fuel filter, or it’s not getting power and ground. The computer does not measure this, only injection pressure. Injection pressure should be at least 3500psi while cranking. This can clue you in to a problem with the low pressure, 60psi lift pump.

hi, question, does the crank sensor issue afects the desired fuel pressure at all? meaning at high pressure cp4 desired pressure?

To the best of my knowledge, no, it should have no influence on fuel rail pressure.

Yep, my 2018 ram eco failed. It's somehow not covered under the recall cause its one vin number off. Even though it clearly states that those that aren't covered would not be affected by tuner ring failure. But I found a good diesel mechanic that fixed it for me, with the fix, oil change, new air filter and 40 mile tow it cost me 1,300.

Great video. Is this repair fixed under warranty, even after the factory warranty is expired? Currently, they offer only one fix: a flash of the software. How often have you seen this happen? What percentage of Ecodiesels will this happen to? I have a 2016 Ram Ecodiesel. thx
@tadsworkshop Жыл бұрын
If you have a powertrain warranty on the vehicle, they should cover this. Otherwise, yes your correct, Chryslers temporary fix is to program it so the engine can continue to run off the camshaft sensors, instead of the crankshaft sensor. I believe the truck may go into a limp mode afterwards, but I can’t say for sure. They are more concerned about the legal aspects of someone getting into an accident if the engine shuts off unexpectedly. I would say it will happen to all Ecodiesels eventually. I think environment plays a large factor in the magnetic strip delaminating from the steel ring (humidity, salt, long periods of sitting, etc). You could wait it out, or be proactive and take care of it before it’s an issue. That being said, who knows, your truck might live out its lifespan without it ever failing. It’s really hard to put a percentage on it.

My truck just stalled on highway. My mechanic just did this job and now the engine is leaking engine oil from the case where the starter is. There is also a knocking noise from the engine. Do you have any ideas what that might be?
@tadsworkshop3 ай бұрын
@@ThompsonElectrical-i6m yes. That’s a spun crankshaft main bearing. I’ve seen it several times now. The symptom is always the same - loud knocking and a a continuous stream of oil from the rear main seal of the engine, cascading over the oil pan. You’ll have to rebuild or replace your engine. Sorry for your luck, but you’re definitely not the first. I just replaced an ecodiesel three weeks ago with a spun crankshaft bearing.

@@alfredochamu4862 yes. It’s possible it has spun main bearings at the crankshaft. If you see a stream of oil coming from the rear of the engine while cranking/running, you’ll know it has spun main bearings, which signifies engine rebuild or replacement.

It’s an engine in high demand and prices are up there for used ones.

Can a crank sensor malfunction and cause it to damage a main bearing bearing. My truck while driving last night truck With no warnings just went flat but did not completely die. Lots of flashing warning lights. And it sounds like a steady knocking in the engine and it sounds like I’m down a couple of cylinders. Scanner reads, crank sensor and several other codes in the transmission and ABS I’m sure the other codes are feeding off of the fact the engine isn’t running properly and causing other codes. Obviously I don’t want to do the repair if I have a bearing that’s bad. I’m just not that educated on diesel engines. I know enough to know if I have a bad bearing I usually would drop some oil pressure. There’s no drop in oil pressure whatsoever and there’s no leaking from anywhere. Any ideas?
@tadsworkshop2 ай бұрын
@@NOS-ZL1 main bearing issues are well documented for these engines, but in my experience an ecodiesel with a spun main bearing will always dump oil out of the rear main seal. Specifically, a steady stream of oil. So if you don’t see that, I would personally pull the transmission and transfer case (if yours is 4WD) and replace the crank sensor and the reluctor wheel. From what you’re describing, it sounds like just the crank sensor. Observe for that massive oil leak I mentioned, but otherwise, go for it.
@NOS-ZL12 ай бұрын
@@tadsworkshop that’s kind of what I was thinking. I think since I don’t have the oil pressure loss and I don’t have any leaks. It’s worth taking the gamble and going ahead and doing the repair. I have one more question for you if you wouldn’t mind. I’ve heard a rumor if you ever have to do this repair something would have to be reprogrammed for it to work properly. Is that something I should be concerned about? If it matters My truck is fully deleted and is tuned by Ecodiesel of Canada.
@tadsworkshop2 ай бұрын
@@NOS-ZL1 no. I’ve never had to do anything special after replacing an ecodiesel crank sensor, both on deleted trucks and stock ones. It’s true, on some vehicles there may be a crankshaft relearn procedure, but I’m not aware of any on the ecodiesel and it’s never been an issue. Also, I want to note, as you get down to the crank sensor, there is a flywheel and a counterweight you’ll see that has to be removed. Just pay close attention to how everything is bolted together. I like to use an oil based paint marker so mark how things are clocked together. Take pictures, etc. Please let me know when you get your truck back up and running!

I’ll replace the reluctor wheel and Also the crank position sensor However, after putting it back together, I run into an issue that I was hoping maybe you could shed some light on. After doing the repair I go to start the truck and it spins over approximately a second and a half and times out. Truck is spinning freely. I’ve also change the starter relay thinking that it was possibly kicking out. I check for any codes or anything that could be causing it to time out after just a second or two. Everything reads good with no fault code. I’ve ran Internet I’m finding a lot of crank no starts. But nothing on the starter timing out before it has an opportunity to start the truck. @tadsworkshop Жыл бұрын
The recall is a bad joke at best. It’s reprogramming of the computer, so that, instead of the truck dying in the middle of your drive, the truck will actually still be able to limp you home and start back up again using the camshaft sensors. I don’t know for sure, but I’d imagine driveability issues would exist, and the engine staying in limp mode until the sensor and it’s ring are replaced. They do not want the expense of paying technicians to remove transmissions to fix the problem properly.

my engine stopped working after hearing that cranking noise on highway. could this be due to faulty crankshaft sensor? besides i had that electric throttle light on also. My friend who is a mechanic said engine might be dead. What do you think?
@tadsworkshop Жыл бұрын
Not sure what your referring to by the noise, but that is concerning. At least the subject matter of this video, the crankshaft sensor and its reluctor ring, would not make any noise once they fail, just simply stall out and engine will crank over endlessly without starting. Look under your engine. If you see a substantial oil leak from the rear of the engine, that would be a sign of crankshaft main bearing failure. Let me know what you see or are experiencing.
