I just went through a 2 month research on trucks for hunting/camping needs. Test drove a bunch and ended up ordering 75th anniversary edition PW. Both have their place, but an all-inclusive package that PW offers - couldn’t beat it.

Owner of a '13 PW here. I can tell you that you didn't even come near to challenging the PW on that trail. You are spot on about the hidden winch. Not much else out there has the approach angle that he PW has with a 12,000 warn winch on it. With sliders, aftermarket high clearance bumpers and diff guards you would be amazed what it can do. The articulation in combo with the lockers keeps it planted and in control on some pretty crazy terrain. It takes a lot to lift a wheel.

Yeah, Death Valley doesn't offer a lot of technical spots. We've taken these rigs on much worse, this was just a small example and Christian's first real test in his PW but we were obviously let down a tad thinking we'd have more difficult trails. Was still a lot of fun.

2022 PW owner here.. I also chose the PW over a Cummins due to not having much to tow. Also not ready for the turbo lag on the highway. Going to ride with the PW for a while until I can't take the MPG anymore and make the switch over to diesel. Other than that I absolutely love the PW it is a great truck and the new Level 3 package gives you lots of new tech goodies!

So far the only grip for us now that we have two power wagons is the gas mileage and they can’t tow as much as the diesel but that’s a fair trade off for the Offroad capabilities and smaller price tag

Your annual fuel costs will be the same or slightly higher if you go from around 13-14 mpg combined on 87 octane to 19ish mpg combined on diesel. Not to mention the higher cost of the truck and higher maintenance costs (DEF included).

Yes your correct, in the vid he said the same payload, it’s not even close. Maybe consider a Cummins with the factory off road package. Most of the goodies as the Power Wagon, can't recall off hand what is left off. I think TFL did a test on one. I currently have a 2014 SLT stock (pretty much a Tradesman with a few more goodies, most SLT's were fleet rentals, as was mine.), I'm pleasantly surprised where I can actually go with sensible driving. No lift planned (reasons) but I do want to upgrade shocks and bumpers, add a winch, perhaps a Truelock and sway disconnect. As I'm sure you know, the biggest limitation is the sheer size of the truck.

We are running that same wheel/tire setup on our white 2018 PW but switching to a better offset. However, the long-term side of me sees the perks of having a 2500 diesel with some suspension mods (thorn/carli). The raptor is damn good looking but after almost any trip, there was some type of issue that would come up, it was a 2017 though. What fuel range did your 2015 2500 Cummins get and what’s the PW getting? I know the tank sizes are different. Let’s start with avg city/highway mpg and then offroad on your typical overland trip? Not towing because that’s obvious. Just with your fully loaded gear hauling. If the Cummins is only getting like 3mpg more than the PW then my decision can be made quite easily.

If you want longevity, pulling power and gas mileage, go with the Cummins. The Cummins will keep up with the PW Offroad but you’ll need to add a rear locker, it’s heavier and once you add a winch, your approach angle is not as good as the PW. It’s such a tough decision lol. This is technically problematic. almost 700 pounds of extra weight and too much torque for lockups in those axles. Need another engine. With less weight and torque. Or an axle from a tractor. Then it would be possible to get off-road capabilities with an expeditionary range with good towing capabilities. But in this case, marketers will hit a horse price tag, otherwise other versions simply will not buy.

I mean, it’s been done before and works but front lockers in the Cummins is an issue with the torque for sure. But a rear locker in a Cummins works great

Hey bud, excellent review. My two cents for what it's worth and if anyone gives a s&*^. I'm a diesel guy through and through, been driving them since the late 80's in my early 20's. Since covid killed my business and I sold all my equipment, heavy trailer etc. I had a choice to go with a gas job since I no longer had heavy ish towing requirements. With that said, I don't think I would have swapped if it wasn't for all the EPA mandated fkn garbage killing our diesels today, along with low sulfer fuel/low lubricity (yes I know I could have deleted it with some risk). So I made a choice to order a 2021 Powerwagon. So the takeaway here is this...from a 100% diesel guy... if you don't have towing requirements where you truly need a diesel, get the wagon. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS TRUCK. Can't belive I'm saying it, but I think my all time favorite.

Thanks for the reply Bill, that actually helps a lot. Am going between the 2022 PW and the 2500 Cummins. My only gripe is i wanted the Mega Cab which i couldn't get with the PW - What's your real world experience with MPG and Mx costs between the two motors if you don't mind me asking as paying 10k extra for the diesel, if i don't need to tow over 10k, it ,seems it would take a while to get those fuel savings realized if you did between 10-15k miles per year. Thanks, Alex

@@Anthelionhelicopters personally, if I was towing over 7500lb. On a regular basis, meaning decent distances and frequently...I'd still go diesel. Not so much for savings but for the power. Also, modern diesels that are not deleted seem to do fine as long as they are worked...and that's the key to it...must be worked to keep all the systems clean and functioning properly. The PW of course is a very specific vehicle for a specific purpose in my humble opinion. My better half and I are planning cross country off road trips, towing an off road specific trailer, weighing a max of 3500lb. So perfect fit for us. Sounds like you need the larger cab, so back to gas vs. Diesel. In terms of mpg, I get 10-11 in town and 13-15 on the hwy (6.4). My latest diesel, 2017 power stroke, 13.5 in town, 16-17 hwy (empty), 9-11 towing depending on weight (I hear the 2020 and up Ford with 10 speed is much better). Can't help you with the cummins as as my last one of those was a 2006.

@@Anthelionhelicopters gas mileage isn’t even a fair comparison between the two. The diesel destroys the PW for MPG’s in literally every category but it’s cost of maintenance is higher per year plus DEF costs

PS diesel maint. Cost 75% more than gas truck. Gas truck using 87 octane, much lower cost than diesel fuel, and that nullifies and savings you would with the diesel in terms of increased miles per gallon.

I’ve wanted a PW for years.. ended up getting the Cummins because of possible towing needs in the future.. and i couldn’t resist a diesel.. plus i don’t wheel enough to justify a PW.. just install a front locker, front AEV bumper and a winch and bam you’ve got a diesel PW 😂.. it’s a toss up..

@@RogueElement yeah well I drive 1000-2k miles a month and I don’t tow anything and wanted a powerful and reliable motor with plenty of haul. Comfort, light luxury and exterior aesthetics was what I wanted all for a good price. A blacked out hemi (non etorque - don’t like that fake hybrid sh*t) 1500 4x4 with ram boxes and equipment group 2 for $50k and no money down and a payment I liked. My plan is to keep the stock black 20x9 wheels until it’s paid off and run 35x12.5R20 Kenda klever RTs on a 2” mopar lift for now. When it’s paid off I’m not sure if I wana go 2.5” icon stage 5 and keep 35s or go 4-6” BDS to fit 37s (with 17” wheels). The latter will look better but I’ll have to upgrade the cv axles and steering components which isn’t a big deal, but depending on how I wheel the truck idk if it’s necessary. I can go almost anywhere I want on 35s and maintain street manners with acceptable fuel economy and won’t have to regear as I have 3.92s. If I keep the truck as long as my 2006 then it’ll constantly experience upgrades for its life anyway 😎

Look man, I’m always been a ram man, because it’s easier to work on and it’s very reliable to me that’s my opinion. I have an 2011 ram1500 4x2, that I bought in South Carolina when I was stationed there. I never had a problem, it’s been there to Texas several times, to fort Campbell to Texas and South Carolina back to fort Campbell. From Georgia fort Benning to Texas, back to Georgia. Then I retired from the military back to Texas from Georgia. From Texas to Orlando Disney, back to Texas, from Texas to fort Carson Colorado back to Texas. Then to Texas back to Orlando again back to Texas without an issue.

no one has been able to respond to this question why are most of the trucks are rams and not the other brands, 8 out of ten are rams 1500 up
@RogueElement

The biggest reason is the availability of aftermarket parts. More Offroad/overland parts available for Ram than all other brands combined. Also, the Ram 2500 and up are standard straight axle which is desired more than IFS on others. Plus the Ram is a wheeling beast and has a better price point

We ended up buying the 2021 Power Wagon but after having both, the Cummins is WAY more comfortable on the road if I’m comparing stock suspensions. The PW has plenty pulling power but it’s no Cummins. We are buying a 29’ travel trailer in January too that I’ll pull after I put my Thuren stage 5 on but will probably add removable air bags to help with the payload and sagging
