If the projectile and the vortex are both internally using the same projectile logic (they probably are), then it is possible the owner is set upon instantiation (as it should) but then the "projectile" that can be deployed (the vortex itself) is hardcoded to update its owner upon deployement but they forgot to do it with Ram's vortex.

i think a reasonable hypothesis is that a newer developer coded their own ownership system instead of just copying the data over for one reason or another. following this up with more recent bugs you can sense a sort of "style shift" in the technical details of how newer heros are coded following different methodologies compared to older ones. thank goodness for the failsafe and this will be far from the last time it saves a hero from being put on the 2-week bug bench.

It's probably because the area of effect of the vortex is different from the projectile so the projectile still becomes Genji's but the area of effect is still owned by the Ramattra

Feel like it MIGHT be because of how ramattra's vortex used to bounce off of enemies, so "bouncing" off of a Genji deflect kinda breaks the vortex by making it able to damage teammates, but since it's technically "bouncing off of an enemy" because that's how it just works, it's still belongs to Ramattra? Could be completely wrong tho 😹😹

The assist team assumption may just be the UI issue only. The game has some weird UI assumptions in different places such as the ultimate confirmation (LMB to confirm, RMB to cancel). If you swap the keybind of primary and secondary fire, the confirmation UI will be incorrect. Ps. I tried it with Lifeweaver.

My general working theory is that Overwatch has so many customized corner cases based on so many variables that the code is either a masterclass in design, or a ball of spaghetti with nearly everything needing to be hand-coded into every case. There hasn't been much to suggest the former.

When Genji deflects Ramatra's vortex projectile it transfers ownership of the actual projectile since its color does change from red to purple. When the vortex lands it creates a damaging AOE and due to how the script for the team transfer of projectiles works it most likely gets instantiated under Ramatra rather than Genji. This could be fixed if the projectile can check the owner of itself, and then instantiate the AOE under the correct player.
