Yay, I've been looking forward to this video! As soon as Bookborn checks over the system and gives it her stamp of approval, I'll start using it in my own book journal. Lol, kidding, kidding! I'll definitely be implementing this. (I'd been loosely using the Harry Potter OWL system, more for fun than practicality. 😁) On a related note, you mentioned Storygraph once in passing, so naturally, I have to write a brief essay about it. I recently made the switch from Goodreads to Storygraph and love it. In fact, I feel a metaphor coming on. Imagine going from a crowded shopping mall bookstore with attached cafe to a simple, quiet library where you're friends with the librarian. Not only does she keep meticulous records for you, but she also recommends books she thinks YOU will like. Never going back to GR. The only downside I've seen so far is all the auithors are on GR.

Ok so this relates to the video in practically no way at all, but i was writing before i clicked on this and i still had spotify playing. Only just found you guys and this system seems amazing. I often see for example a 3 star and wonder how to interpret that based on how that specific person interprets a 1 - 5 scale. Will definitely be using this going forward (adapted to take into account that im not yet well read enough to distinguish good vs bad prose. Only just got back into reading so for me prose is just, does it convey the information), anyways keep it up guys, gonna go binge your vids to find some recommendations for the tbr pile Editing to add. Since the .25 granularity perfectly matches storygraph, are you guys on there? Would be interested to follow

@@2ToRamble just a suggestion: this rating system is dope but perhaps you could make a cheat sheet form which you can link in the description of future episodes breaking down books. You can mention at the start you have a video full breakdown of the rating system but if the viewer wants to just understand the gist of it - look at this cheat sheet? Regardless, love the nuance of the updated rating system ❤

I'd definitely like to see the books that were already reviewed, given ratings based on your new rating system. That way it's easier to compare those book's ratings with books rated with the new system. Like, you guys just gave The Will of the Many rave reviews, and I wanted to look back to see if you two gave The Sword of Kaigen higher or lower scores, but that one was rated using the old system.
@2ToRamble5 ай бұрын
Fair! We can start doing that - we do have a more recent review of Sword of Kaigen where we give it 5 stars - thats in a different format of video style since we reviewed it once. It was sort of an “update review” since we’d last read it

Love the video! But Austin your math was backwards. 1-5 middle is 2.5 because there is 5 numbers. And 5 divided by 2 is 2.5. If the scale was 0-5 then hen you add one number so with there being 6 numbers to choose from 3 is the absolute middle.
@2ToRamble6 ай бұрын
Ah I see how youre interpreting it but I dont believe that’s right - for example, if the scale were 4-5, the middle would be 4.5 because that is the median number of that selection. We wouldnt divide 5 bc that’s assuming the top number divided by 2 would equal the median of the selected range of the rating scale. 3 is the middle of 1-5 because look at it like this: There are 2 whole numbers higher than 3 (4 and 5) and there are 2 whole numbers lower than 3 (1 and 2) - meaning 3 is the dead center of those, at least for our scale!

Plot: for me, how tight is the book? Golden Son for me felt like every sentence served a purpose, either moving the plot forward or developimg character. It felt like not a word was wasted. I'm reading Iron Gold and I am about to start skipping Ephraim's parts. I don't see the point of him yet, and it's grating on my nerves. Hopefully it will male sense later.

Jane - austin here - 10000% agree with you!!
@janefan12166 ай бұрын
@2ToRamble Do you apply your star ratings to your categories, too? I am trying to nail down my thoughts on Iron Gold, and if I do the math, then the "characters" category is coming up at a 1.75 for me! 😂 Very few characters really made an impact on me in this book. So, do I go by the word association and say "2.5 = disapointed"? Or, do I go with the math score?
@2ToRamble5 ай бұрын
@@janefan1216 I use the word, and for me Iron Gold was flawed so I gave many categories a 2 -- the 2.5 is a less passionate dislike because you were 'dissapointed' not 'very disappointed' (2.25) or thinking it was a genuinely 'flawed' (2) book if that helps! We just line up the more passionate dislike/like with a number to make sense of the scale!

Hey thanks a bunch for this. I had kinda figured most of it out from what you told me before and just watching your reviews, but this definitely helps. Also, you made two massive mistakes today. Firstly, you gave me the idea of rating each episode of your podcast. If you won't do it, I will! I'll need to figure out how, so you'll receive a rating on your next episode from then on. Beware, I will not spare my bad ratings! If you suck, I will cyberbully you. Secondly, speaking of cyberbullying, Austin.....you mentioned Robin Hobb, the greatest author who has ever lived. The First Lady of Epic Fantasy, the Queen of Dragons, the Empress of Tears, Matriarch of the Elderlings. Esteemed Austin and Richard, if you do not read Robin Hobb's masterpieces, you are a pair of [REMOVED BY MY LAWYER]! There! How do you feel now?
