You should put your chapter one draft out for feedback. One of the hardest things to get is eyes on your stuff. And even harder is to get honest or well thought-out feedback. I know I can read a chapter and usually tell if there are any major issues that need worked on

I, personally, don't believe the overall number of Goodreads ratings for Fourth Wing are authentic. That book had over 100,000 ratings a couple weeks after it released and reach over 1 million ratings just 6 months after that. It currently holds a 4.62/5 which makes it one of the highest rated books in history, when you factor in the number of ratings. Yet, pretty much every booktuber I've seen talk about it say it's not worth the hype. I'm pretty well convinced that Rebecca Yarros hired that company you referred to (or another like it) that guarantees you get a NY Times best seller. And I think one of the ways they do this is by paying large numbers of people to give glowing reviews and ratings for a book as soon as it comes out, which garners it a lot of initial hype. For a book that's the first in a series, by an author not known for fantasy, to have it's Goodreads ratings climb at a faster rate than Harry Potter books does not add up. I understand some books reaching much high numbers than others, but the way it skyrocketed from day 1 of it's release just doesn't make sense to me. Why would a first book in a series, written by someone who has never written fantasy, need no time for word of mouth to spread for it to explode the way it did?

I can never remember what the word is, but as a grammar nerd i love that it exists. Contronym! "dust, which means to add small particles to something or to remove small particles from something."

To me the biggest travesty of the NYT Bestseller List is that in two years Spare will be on remainder tables for $5 and still not selling but innumerable SFF titles will still be selling at a low but steady rate week in/week out. The NYT list doesn’t tell us much over time.

I don't recall if you touched on this, but I'm sure it's not just retailers who give a "NYT Best Seller" extra attention. It's probably also reviewers, interview shows, etc. who think their audience will not only expect it but may be more likely to read, watch, or listen if they cover the book. Then, the reading public starts to feel a little FOMO because "everyone else" seems to be reading it.

Interesting conversation! I never knew it was based on random bookstores. That sounds so biased towards the general population of the town the bookstore is in (some towns being more diverse than others). I also wonder how much those recommendation index cards bookstore employees often put next to the books they recommend affect the sales of those books compared to others. 🤔
@2ToRamble10 ай бұрын

26:08 I think the weekly list being treated like the yearly badge of quality is a reason why it feels like the Oscars. Just because it sells well for a week, doesn’t mean it’s a good book so I think y’all hit the nail on the head when y’all said it means more for the author than the reader because the author doesn’t trust the fact that the NTY best seller list means quality. At least I don’t. Part of it also, it’s that just because many people are buying it, doesn’t mean it’s a good book anyway. Who trusts the masses? Personally, I think if they just want to report the sales, then the weekly list is fine, but if they want to be a list of the “best” books of the year, then the addition of a yearly list wouldn’t be a bad idea. Edit: ok I accidentally just parroted a lot of what they said so I’m just agreeing 😂 also yeah democracy is cringe

Not sure where recommendations are preferred, if at all, but i recently read the first book of Peter Newman's "The Vagrant" trilogy that is one of my favorite books i have read in years. The odd thing is it came out in 2015 and i can count the number of videos i can find on it on one hand. Think it would be a great opportunity to review something that has been relatively untouched and contains some wild and weird fantasy/sci-fi concepts.

41:00 Many Amish are great. Many aren't. Especially living in modern areas around them you end up hearing TONS of stories of abuse and such. Especially against women. Unity is very easy to achieve when you're an insular, self-policing community not afraid of a heavy hand. Also Rumspringa (the Amish tradition of leaving for a time to decide if you want to remain in the community), while better than not providing the opportunity at all, is also more insidious than it seems. Of course it can be different per individual case, but in many cases the community will consider you dead if you choose to leave, even immediate family will never speak to you again, leaving you in an alien world you're largely unprepared for with no connections. Imagine choosing between everyone you know and love and ANYTHING else. It's a very loaded "choice." Again, many are great. There's a lot of value to be found in the lifestyle and philosophies. But they're FAR from perfect. That's my rant.
@2ToRamble10 ай бұрын
Ah didnt know this! Going to look into Runspringa now 🫡
@Magdalena287Ай бұрын
As someone who is from Ohio and grew up in a town only an hour from the Amish community I agree with this statement. A LOT of abuse happens to women and children in those communities and since they’re self policing like the Catholic Church they can get away with it for the most part
