Sorry for making you stare at my face for an extended period, but also thanks for listening to my somewhat unstructured initial thoughts on the Splinter Cell VR news. I'm not sure if Ubisoft will be able to convert this series to the platform without a bunch of sacrifices, but my personal experience with VR can't help but make me interested. Coincidentally, I just started recording gameplay footage for a video related to this franchise so the next proper release on my channel should also have a goggled man in the thumbnail. This is a big ol' "we'll see" from me. The biggest potential problem I see is that the medium is so young, that there are very few "established mechanics" that are universal across most games. Some games want you to do short teleports, others utilize the joysticks, etc. Although it would be cool to be immersed in the stealth gameplay, I figure that unless it's given the full-on AAA development that say Half-Life: Alyx was given, it will be an underwhelming, short experience with little to no story, and not a whole lot gameplay-wise that differentiates it from others like it. I guess what concerns me is that, for this to be really good, it requires Ubi to think outside the box and innovate on the VR medium, and I just don't know if they are capable of doing that anymore.
@nikallport66094 жыл бұрын

@@habadasheryjones No, what developers should be doing is a VR compatible version of the flagship title, where the VR version was designed primarily for VR extra features and is the best way to play the game. Then a pancake version for non-Vr gamers. Another spinoff title exclusive for pancake gamers and yet another spinoff title or exclusive for VR. That way everyone is happy, and game technology advances. I’ve been a gamer for 35+ years now and I’ll tell you, it’s always been about the hardware. Worker abuse aside, I think the most frustrating aspect of modern day Ubi is that the developers clearly know how to make good games. One of my favorite aspects of SC: Blacklist is Sam's character arc. I'm not saying the character is bad, but aside from being cool, he's always been a bit flat to me. They've tried to do things with him, like in Double Agent (but as Crit said in his video on the games, it didn't really lead to anything substantial when we set aside the superficial) and Conviction (which tries, but he starts the game a bitter rogue agent and ends the game a bitter agent of the state), they've never been super successful, in my opinion. And if you look at their more modern games, the development teams obviously know how to create compelling villains, fun stories, solid gameplay loops and convincing worlds, the higher ups at Ubi obviously really don't care and stuff every monetization scheme they can into their games and push them out as fast as possible with little regard for quality.

A VR Splinter Cell is an insult to me personally, and more importantly the limitations of VR will necessitate the gameplay design to be the most far removed Splinter Cell yet developed, something I'm not at all optimistic in UbiSoft (or any developer/publisher) to be able to do in a satisfactory way. And from a business perspective, I don't really see why they would make Splinter Cell, of all franchises, a VR exclusive. The Splinter Cell name won't help sell the game to new people, and only serve to piss off a huge swathe of whatever fans are left at this point. When this thing does comes out though, the hardcore fans will be looking back at Blacklist a little more fondly, I think.

I'm SO disappointed ubi cancelled splinter cell VR. It could be such an amazing game... Indulge me for a second... Imagine grabbing enemies with an interrogation chokehold from behind, pulling them into the shadows and using voice recognition from your headset mic you say under your breath 'TALK!' or 'SPILL IT!' some enemies may need more persuading using VR interrogation mechanics to scare them, the enemy gives you some info like a password or secret giving you a tactical advantage in the next room. Then you knock them out, pick them up and hide them in a dark hidden shadow to conceal them from other enemies IN VR Imagine climbing a pipe and dropping down on an enemy knocking them out in VR. Imagine if they brought back the light and sound meter in VR so if you accidentally wack something and it drops on the floor depending on how loud that object is, the enemies may hear it and come over to investigate. Imagine bringing the goggles over your head and switching from NV to Thermal to EMP in VR. Imagine being able to climb fences, ladders, rappel off walls, rappel from a ceiling, vault over obstacles in VR Imagine being able to do the split jump between two walls and then drop onto an enemy in VR. Imagine being able to hang from ledges and either pull enemies over the ledge so they fall and knock themselves out or you climb over for a suprise interrogation. ALL. IN. VR. Imagine being able to pull off CQC in VR Imagine being able to play as Sam Fisher in VR or imagine an old Sam Fisher as your handler guiding you through. Just hearing Ironsides Sam Fisher voice in VR would be enough. Now imagine being able to do all this WITH A FRIEND in co-op where you and a friend can breach rooms from different angles and get the drop on them via various entrances! Imagine being able to give your partner a lift to access a high ledge and then they help pull you up that hight ledge IN VR Imagine being able to do the back to back wall climb with a partner to climb up elevator shafts etc IN VR Imagine being able to do the long jump where a partner helps to launch you over a massive gap IN VR Splinter Cell VR really has the gameplay, mechanics, story and material to be one of the best VR games ever made. I can literally see it so clearly in my head. It's so frustrating that Ubi gave up on the dream. I don't know if anyone else wants something like this, but God damn does it make me wanna learn how to develop games to make this happen lol

Situational awareness in VR is actually better than with a controller because you can freelook realistically while easily keeping track of your body's orientation. In order to look over both shoulders consecutively while moving with a controller you have to wiggle the stick in an awkward half circle twice in a row, trying to match the camera's movement speed. In VR you can track three patrolling hostiles while moving, opening a door, and switching gadgets all at the same time. And your character can have as much strength as you want, so you can use both hands to hang from a pipe while drawing a weapon, or hold a weapon in one hand and a gadget in the other. Its versatility actually lends itself very well to the stealth genre That being said, Alyx and Boneworks were the exception, not the rule. The vast majority of licensed VR games have been short, gimmicky tech demos, and Ubisoft just announced two of them at the same time while already working on a full game for one of the attached licenses having just ousted their entire executive and lead creative staff, so I doubt they have the resources to start working on projects of that scale on an unfamiliar platform. Before Alyx, Valve's VR team made several instantly forgettable tech demos to get familiar with the medium and test their new peripherals, and they weren't simultaneously going through a corporate coup d'etat and a global pandemic
@EddieTheBunny4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I think they did this because VR appears to be a cheap method to make a quick buck and requires little effort. They didn't make a real Splinter Cell game because they don't know how to monetize it. That's what it's all about. You can't really monetize a stealth game in a way that brings in a lot of money.

I just super don't trust Ubisoft right now. Look at Rainbow Six, look at how they stuffed up Breakpoint, not to mention their new Immortals Fenyx Rising game. They either want their games to be the next COD or the next Fortnight, littered with microtransactions. It will either be a goofy Splinter Cell game or the next Blacklist - which tried it's hardest to be an hollywood action military something something... I hate to be so negative because I know there are folks working at Ubisoft that want Sam to return to form but they just can't cus it won't make the big bucks. They need to take notes from horror games and horro films. Make it smaller budget, smaller team, less risk. Stealth games, like horror, are pretty niche. They keep screwing these games up cus they through tens and hundreds of millions into them and don't see a return.

Playing in first person going through a darkened New York or opening a super cool vault and accidentally triggering the invisible tripwire at the door on the way out would be awesome in VR. The first person mod that got released for Chaos Theory about 5-6 years ago would give a good idea of how it'd look in VR. A good VR stealth game that works pretty well is Espire 1, it has climbing, grabbing enemies, hanging from a pipe and drawing your pistol is so satisfying compared to a regular game. I had pretty much given up on SC and Ubi as a whole. Everything in their franchises has gone hyper liberal and their inherent "wokeness" has destroyed their brands. (President Caldwell, err... Clinton...or whatever). 🙄 And, to add insult to injury, they gave over $500k to antifa/blm thugs (America's very own, already well funded, domestic terrorism). And it's not just Ubi. Most game devs are slip sliding down this slope. Basically, they take what you like about their IP, piss all over it, liberalize it, skew it into some hyper feminazi/lgbtq - esque dumpster fire then wonder why it tanks horribly. All the while, play it off as though "gamers just aren't interested in that genre" and scrap the whole franchise. Gaming has become just like Hollyweird (Pedowood). If you don't like the filth their peddling, it's your fault. I've decided to say to hell with them all. I'll play the games I have on the consoles I have and that'll be that. F**k em.

well imagine having "the climb" style gameplay when infiltrating and on top of that imagine literally leaning auround doors and into windows to sneak around enemys. gosh i´d LOVE this i mean the game mechanics are already fleshed out. ready to be taken from many different games. climbing shooting, sneaking, knife play. everything is ready to be taken. almost no more work involved.

If they ever want to make a new mainline Splinter Cell game, they might need to go for more kind gameplay style to appeal to a wider audience, but they shouldn't water down the stealth. They should split the game into three main gameplay loop as you control three main characters. Stealth: like Chaos Theory, Sam is slow and methodical. Assault: Briggs is fast and aggressive, stealth is optional, his stealth would be quicker but easier to be spotted. Undercover: Grim or another character, plays like Hit Man or early Assassin's Creed, mostly non-lethal and you blend into a crowd populated mostly by civilians. Each level will have multiple play option and segments. You might start a level with Stealth to create an opportunity to let your Undercover character into the level, how you do determined how easy the Undercover section is, and if you blown your cover in the Undercover section, you can start an Assault segment to extract your Undercover character, if you didn't cause a commotion, start another Stealth segment. The combination and order of the type of gameplay segments is endless, but should change according to story and mission. This will also make coop and Spy v Merc very interesting if they can get all three gameplay segments into a single level.

Unknightly showed the potential of a stealth game in vr that is very similar to thief. So far it's an unfinished product, but VR for splinter cell has very big potential. Being face to face with a guard while you are hiding in the shadows and holding completely still is very intense. Sneaking up on a guard, you physically creeping up on the guard hoping he wont hear you or turn around. Try unknightly, and you'll understand what I mean. Stealth in VR is terrifying.

I think if Ubisoft does this properly, it's gonna go well. Stealth in VR can work amazingly. Just imagine climbing on pipes and taking out your enemy from above, and then dragging their body into the shadows. Physically hiding and taking cover from enemies will add so much to the suspense and experience. Come on Ubisoft, we're counting on you.

Would’ve been cool to get SC VR along with Remake that is in works and after that new original one. But sadly they’ve cancelled SC VR and I wouldn’t be surprised if they cancel remake later on, like they most likely did with Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake, but we don’t know yet, since they are lately on cancelling spree, due to lack of money, from what I’ve heard.

When it comes to mobility, I always think of blade and sorcery. That game always seemed the most intuitive with player movement(even moreso than boneworks). Climbing feels simple but satisfying, you can grab NPCs by gripping the controller over "grab points", and that was developed by a single guy and later a small team. Just make sure to nail the vaulting mechanic so we can climb up to higher vantage points easier! I feel like a splinter cell using mobility mechanics similar blade & sorcery and unkightly would be a great jumping off point for Ubisoft. I do think the climbing through vents would be interesting, but an easy solution to that would be making them large enough that you could crouch though them (like in Arkham games). That way we don't have to go prone and it just makes it easier in general. Lighting/sound mechanics could be pulled straight from chaos theory. Have the light/noise meters viewable on your wrist OPSAT and even in the corner of your NVG view when they are activated. Have NPC detection work off of those meters and voila. Sticky cameras and the door cameras would be fun to use too. You could have a tablet on your back like the game Onward, and check camera feeds there. I think the makings of a splinter cell game are there, it's more a matter of trusting Ubisoft to be capable to see them. At least in my opinion. If only I could hear Lambert and Grims voice in my ear one more time....

I think Splinter Cell would work in VR. Shooting will work great, yes, but it will change how you play a stealth game. Some move set will have to be removed, especially the fast pace movement from Conviction and Blacklist, but the new first person perspective will give new life to stealth. I'm hoping they might even remove the light and sound meter and make you rely on your own senses. The smaller move set would also reflect on Sam's older age, if we are having him as the protagonist. Aside from your lifting goggle up idea, a quick flip of your neck up and down should also activate and deactivate the goggle (if the real VR goggle can support a flick of the neck without it falling off). I think the major downside would be if you need to keep yourself physically crouched to crouch walk in game. It might kill some knees. Assassin's Creed might also work if they completely remove the parkour mechanic and focus solely on the social stealth and blending in from the older titles. Basically a first person Hit Man or Spy Party game set in a historic time period.

I’m not happy with how things are at the moment with some of my favorite video game franchises . Most Notable is the Splinter Cell series . There is many reasons . Now I’m not saying Conviction is a bad game but here’s my thoughts on it. It’s a good action game , it’s not a great stealth game . It focuses more o. How brutal Sam is , where in the other games he didn’t take pleasure in doing what he did to other people but it was the mission . I think after Double agent is where the series started shifting it’s attention towards a Conviction like approach . I know that the books are better than the games there’s no comparison that can really be made . Micheal Ironside was what drove to play Splinter Cell and the games after that . His gravelly voice made it feel like you knew who Sam was before you knew much about him . DLC has really ruined the gaming scene in my opinion. Also .... that dreaded Zero character in RBS Siege .... I’m not gonna lie worst decision they made about the game . And as far as mobile games like the one you talked about in this video ...... Just No. enough with the pay to win games, enough with games like Siege . Ghost Recon suffered too. And I don’t want to see Sam Fisher suffer the same fate as the games listed . He deserves better !!!. He needs to pretend to be Harry Tuddle and disappear. Just my thoughts

What I don't like about the whole VR tech is how "moving around" feels, you either use a joystick which kind of negates the immersion making you feel like you're on rollerskates or "leap" from place to place on the press of a button which in either case would be weird with SC. This tech is awesome for combat games sure but not for stealth at all imo... And how on earth are they going to implement towers to climb??! I mean, that's the best part of any Ubi game right?? ... right? But what scares me the most is that there's almost no way they'll be able to implement the "classic" SC moveset into this in a good way! Grabbing someone will have to be weird like you said, ledge climbing, doing the splits on walls, lockpicking, even just jumping will be weird man...

It's got climbing, night vision, holding guards up at gunpoint, etc. Also space junkies, ubisofts only current vr title that I know of, is superbly fun, and if it had more players I could easily say it's one of my favorites. Ubisoft should be treating a nearly 20 year old much loved IP with pride and class and not even thinking about milking it dry. Look at how well IOI recently handled the Hitman trilogy. Ubisoft should monetise the heck out of their Rainbow Six Siege and Assasins' Creed Timersavers crap to keep them competitive and use the funds to make the best single player stealth game on the market. Have some pride in your product and fanbase Ubisoft! Edit: I'd actually just be happy with a Full 4K Collection Remaster/Remake from SC:1 to Blacklist with full trophies for each game.

Its obvious they don't care about their playerbase if they do this. Not surprising though considering its been what, 6 years since blacklist? Before I get idiots saying it doesn't cost 2k for VR, if you want a DECENT experience compared to others, at least 1k. Oh wait, you also need a GOOD computer and the game itself. i really want ubisoft to create a splinter cell game like when they did chaos theory and double agent (with the xbox original version of course), because in there i really felt like what's it like to be a splinter cell, being stealth, i can have my own options weither to be aggresive or silent as a ghost, i really felt that sense of having actual fun playing the game. to be honest i even haven't played conviction and blacklist because i've seen people on the internet, and i was like this is not the splinter cell i know back when i was a kid, more combat than more being stealthy. and tbh chaos theory had a lot of jokes that cracks me up everytime. i just want ubisoft to make another splinter cell game with the same formula as the chaos theory does, where i can just choose my set of weapons with 3 options, and weither i need to be violent or stealth through out the level. and i won't even bother if they remastered chaos theory and making the xbox original version of double agent available for the pc, better yet why not just combined those two games into one game, make it-- i don't know like 20 replayable levels? and make the gameplay at least to be 8 hours long to complete it. i would really really love that. i'm so in love with chaos theory, that i don't even want to play conviction and blacklist. tho i appreciate the work that have been putting on those games, but i just don't feel it. i want the old sneaky sam fisher back :( and one last thing, please bring back michael ironside to voice sam! hope ubisoft see this
