Sylvester Stallone is one of the greatest action heroes of all time, and more than anything, it was the role of John Rambo that established him as that, and as an icon of the eighties. Between First Blood in 1982 and the upcoming Last Blood later in 2019, Stallone will have portrayed Rambo a total of five times - although there have been some lengthy hiatuses between some of the movies.
In this franchise retrospective, we will look back at the Rambo franchise, explore its beginnings and the issues involved in creating each movie, and the many false starts and creative controversies on the long road towards making “Rambo: Last Blood”.

I'll have to give Stallone credit for a brilliant career and some damn good work. I have to say that because at my age, I've been with him since the beginning and that translates into a literal lifetime (for me ) of entertainment. His rebirth has been amazing and I'm sure with his skills and experience, I trust he will not blow this film. Stallone has earned the accolades and trust of his fans.

I am an unashamed huge fan of Stallone, Rocky and Rambo. That being said, I thought the fourth film ended beautifully and should have been left there. Stallone has had a miraculous track record with reinvigorating his “dead” franchises/characters, something Hollywood, as a whole, has failed at miserably. How long will he continue to press his luck before one flops? He had every opportunity to end on a high note. I’m not sure I want to go see this one.

Who do we use as bad guys these days without offending more then half the planet? Even damn alien cultures are viewed as sympathetic villains. I'd enjoy a Rambo who has left the war behind him and is now healing warriors with PTSD, both sent from front line warfare, in the stockade, and vets. And I'd love to show him helping heal some of them and in the end be murdered by who you'd least expect and have the cops just blast that guy and it be just, wow, somber and mind blowing like, why didn't Rambo stop this guy from killing like, 40 people and himself in a bowling alley.

In the book on which the first movie is loosely based, you find out the sheriff is near as damaged a person as Rambo. It has been years since I have read it, but I think his wife had either divorced and left him, or had died. The sheriff office had become the one thing he had holding his life together. He had issues from his time serving during the Korean War. He and Rambo were two tragic figures who collide and set each other off in the worse possible way. I imagine it was a lot of this that got cut. Instead, the sheriff is simply presented as an abusive bully of a small town sheriff department, that pushes Rambo over the edge, so we can get to all the action.

Yeah the book would be well worth the read 👍 You know Don not just saying this i always sensed that Teasle (hopefully i spelled that right) had more going on with him than just his war complex. Obviously the movie had to cut most of that out but damn it would be awesome if we could have maybe seen some flashbacks of his troubled past even though he is the villian in the story. It sounds kinda wierd but i love good character development which im gonna be honest just doesnt exist anymore. Most of the shit that is on tv and in the theatres is just that and has no ambition or creativity at all.
@dongilleo9743
@dongilleo9743 5 жыл бұрын
@@jasonfowler2098 If you watch closely in the movie you see that Teasle has his Korean War medals and ribbons in a frame in his office. In the book, Trautman tells Teasle that Rambo must have seen the medals and ribbons. When Rambo kills all the deputies, only Teasle manages to survive and get away. Rambo assumes that Teasle, as a combat veteran, will try to ambush him, so he is more cautious trailing him, and Teasle is able to get away before Rambo realizes Teasle is just running away. Teasle is ashamed, and feels like he let his men die, when he should have known better what they were facing. It in turn affects the way Teasle reacts during the final showdown with Rambo, which in contrast to the movie is not as one sided.

Rambo will probably the role that Stallone will be remembered for the most (not dissing his roles as Rocky... or Rhinestone...). The character in the book was essentially a psychopath, but his character in the first movie was more close to reality: a mental wreck, as most veterans turn out to be. Had me close to tears, first time I watched the movie as a kid. 2nd and 3rd were thrashy popcorn flicks - you almost expected Chuck Norris to appear in any given scene . and the 4th is underappreciated, IMO. Some people described it as flashy fan-fic, but essentially it portrays war as what it is: bloody, vulgar and ugly, whether necessary or not.

Rocky is not as much known outside the western world, I think the reason is mainly because it was never that much relatable because of too much dialogues. whereas Rambo goes into the roots of the nature of man, something much deeper and primordial that breaks the barriers of a language or culture. .

A mental wreck eh?...naw its just like all childish mentalities. Im a man....i read your cover. And unlike 99% of you sheeple children. I dont care what your irrelevant title is. Veteran, world leader...its all the same to me. And to me...you walk talk and act like a child. Its like ok military is just a job child. Its not my fault that your parents raise you with balls. Nor is it any other fighter or dods. But anyways i suppose that enough of a dosage or harsh reality for an ignorant hateful block head. Grow up you should kid. You cant generalize anybody. Peace.

Originally Rambo was about a guy who had done everything right, done his best, served his country, and got slapped in the face when he got home. When they went too far, he destroyed them. It is kind of like "Don't create warriors and then spit in their face". This was the core story. I think it is a problem many veterans still face. I am glad Rambo is settling old scores. It is a rounded finish to the saga.

One thing you haven't addressed is that the Mexican cartel storyline was the initial pitch for Rambo, but Stallone shot it down in favor of the Burmese civil war plotline. This was well-explained in the bonus material on the Blu-Ray version.

First Blood is the only good film in the series. It's a very different animal from the other ones. Themes of how vets returned from the war and were shunned and shit on by society, as well as having to mentally deal with the things they experienced and did during it. It's a very anti-war film. Then the sequels happened and the franchise just got stupid and turned into mindless shoot'em'up fest. The first film is the only one worth watching, there's no need for more.
