Personally, it feels more like a generic action film than a Rambo film. It does't deserve the 26% from critics but it also doesn't deserve the 82% ratings from audiences especially since most people felt the film wasn't that good. I think the 6.1 IMDB rating is more accurate.

I actually enjoyed Last Blood a lot; I think it will garner more respect on time. But, it does seem a little off and doesn't fit the series as much as the others. Rambo 4 was very well made but the seriousness of it took away from the fun that Rambo 2 was. Yes Rambo 2 was like 3, but 3 was boring this was just pure 80s escapist fun. I have fond memories of enjoying this as a kid. First Blood may not be "fun"but it is one hell of an important movie, so much so that while all the other ones are movies, this one is a film.

As far as I'm concerned, there are only 1, 2, and 4. I give 2 more credit though. To me, there was a continuity with 1. First Blood asked, "Who are these men we called 'baby killers'?" FB2 asks, "Why are they broken and how can we help them?" It really is very specific to Vietnam because... At the end of WWII, as a comparison; yes, there was PTSD. But troops came home and were honored. In Vietnam, they came home to be hated and vilified. The worst part of FB2 is that its emphasis on action casts a shadow over its message.

Im ranking these in terms of filmmaking and not so much ranking them as Rambo films. If you disagree thats fine. I can see that some of these movies are going to be devided into what you are looking for *1st: Rambo: First Blood (10/10)* This is an action movie at its best. It quickly establishes its characters and their roles in the story. And quickly establishes what the core of the situation is. While still holding stuff back so that it can continuously add to the depth of the story. While at the same time delivering alot of tension by showing us the situation of each character and showing us how it effects each of them. And for its budget the movie reaches its full potential in terms of action. Making sure it has something to offer at all times. And makes sure to make its action very varied. Adding to it a very constistent and smooth narrative and pace we have a movie that never wastes its time and as a result can feel like no time if this is your type of movie. It is also realistic and therefor makes it easier to get connected to. Filmmaking wise it doesnt really make any mistakes and keeps to what is necessary for the story and plot. Amazing film overall. But boring if you expect an explosion heavy war film like the next films. *2nd: Rambo 4 (7/10)* This is the typical good action movie. It sets up a scenario that involves action and tension and then just focuses on that for the rest of the film. It quickly establishes the characters but doesnt add anything further on. And is therefor just a basic action movie that has alot of shooting, alot of explosions, and alot of gore. But it makes sure to keep the action somewhat varied by splitting it into parts. Keeping the most insane action at the end. And it makes sure that the characters all have distinct personalities so that they are at least interesting to have on screen even if the depth of the movie and the story and situation is minimal. Its a good enjoyable action movie that mainly just focuses on delivering alot of action and tension which it does well. But anything deeper is kept to a minimum and therefor leaves this as just a good film. *3rd: Rambo: Last Blood (6/10)* Unlike Rambo 4 which knows that it is just a B movie with action and tension and then purely focuses on delivering that while still trying to reach the full potential this offers. This movie tries to be deeper. It tries to establish alot of character and alot of depth but as a result it lacks a focus. It does a fine job establishing the characters and the mood but then when the plot sets in it gets inconsistent. And starts to drag itself out. Some scenes will suddenly change tone which could have worked if the acting was good which it sadly isnt and is instead pretty mediocre with little emotion and naturality behind it. Which makes it kinda forced. Theres also a character who doesnt have much of a role in the movie and could have been cut out entirely which makes the movie even more of a drag. And certain scenes simply need an emotional punch to be there which due to the lack of powerful acting it simply doesnt have. But this is a fine revenge film that has some pacing and narrative issues. Which are two highly important things in movies like this. But it delivers on the action when it finally does arrive which it does very late. *4th: Rambo: First Blood Part 2 (5/10)* This movie is basically nothing but action. It starts off a plot that involves action. And introduces its characters. And then it is nothing but shooting and explosions throughout the entire rest of the film. It doesnt deepen the characters or tries to put us in their mindset. But instead just shows them and their purpose and then that is it. It doesnt build on anything. Heres Murdock, he is not to trust. Here is Rambo, he is a war hero. Here is this Vietnamese woman Rambo meets who has literally no character or personality or depth but is simply just a blank board with very lazy dialog. Who has a few seconds of romance with Rambo which has not been build up or established at all before leaving the movie entirely. And while this movie is mainly just action like Rambo 4. Rambo 4 at least build on the story and characters somewhat. It established motivation and then had a consistent and focused pace and narrative. This movie introduces the plot and the characters and then just rushes through everything and introduces random elements on the way that are never build upon. But are simply introduced and then finished. Like the romance between Rambo and this Vietnamese woman who could be cut out entirely. As a result this movie has no focus, structure, pace or narrative. Its simply alot of action. And the action itself is not varied at all. Its just shooting and explosions that is filmed in the same basic way the entire time. And so as a whole this is just a mediocre film that has nothing to offer. And is simply just there in the background to look at once in a while. Its what i call a 50/50 movie. Not good. Not bad. Just nothing. You can look at it as a dumb and mindless action movie and enjoy it as that. But otherwise this movie has nothing to offer. I have yet to watch Rambo 3. Its long since i last saw it. And so i wont add it till i have rewatched it

It’s really fascinating that even though it was the first movie in it because of the later movies getting more over the top action-y First Blood in a way kinda became like the oddball of the franchise, because those later movies really made people forget the more grounded, serious roots that the franchise started in, that’s why when it comes to these movies I like to view them as First Blood, Rambo IV and Last Blood and then First Blood: Part II and Rambo III as their own separate canon, because even though they got more crazy and bloody because they still took it seriously Rambo IV and Last Blood still feel like they belong in the same universe as First Blood, whereas First Blood: Part II and Rambo III don’t

My list is based more on entertainment value than how good I think they are 1. Rambo: First Blood Part 2 2. First Blood 3. Rambo 3 (yeah it’s stupid, but it’s stupid fun) 4. Rambo 4, It takes itself a little too seriously for me, but it’s probably a better send off than 5 5. Rambo: Last Blood, not terrible but too slow, the last 20 minutes were awesome

I haven't seen Last Blood and have only watched halfway through Rambo, but I pretty much agree with your ranking. First Blood will always be the best Rambo as it is a serious character study rather than generic action movie. Also its been said Rambo limited killing to just 1 corrupt cop helped inform James Cameron when he turned Arnie Terminator in T2 from a villain to a hero who doesn't kill only wounding people instead.
