She wants him to be the type of person who seeks growth and fulfilment in their career, and who isn’t satisfied with taking a back seat in the planning of their joint future. She wants him to be a hustling, take-action type of guy, but fundamentally he’s a guy who’s happy to just enjoy what he has and who doesn’t see the point of grinding way harder for diminishing returns. This episode is about a mismatch in values. Them disagreeing about money is just a symptom of that.

Honestly, I'm very impressed with this couple's ability to have such hard and confronting conversations without getting defensive. It's not easy to do this, especially on camera, and it shows great emotional maturity and also a deep value that they have of each other. The lack of passion, the lack of goals, and the absence of participation in conversations about their future together is the real root of the problem. She doesn’t want to control him. It is interesting to see a budget where no changes are really needed from a macro level. Just changes to how they share responsibilities. Everything was pretty good. These talks are usually 50/50 couples counseling / budgeting advice, but this one was nearly 100% counseling. They clearly love each other and will do great moving forward.

OMG Finally made it to the end and I was Stacy...I don't think he will ever have a desire to earn as much as she wants for them or for himself. He's comfortable financially bc her salary affords him to be comfortable. So he's either going to have step up or like Ramit said its going to lead to divorce. I find that folks who obsess about retirement, lack the understanding that life isn’t guaranteed nor is good health. Our close friend who was healthy with no preexisting health issues suddenly passed away at 41 this year. My friends brother had a massive stroke at 55 that left him physically and mentally disabled. I hope folks can find a healthy balance regarding their income. If they’re able to have extra money to spend use it, live and enjoy your life.

I don’t think anyone was shaming him for capping out at $70k, it was for the self-imposed limiting belief that it’s all his business will ever be capable of. It wasn’t until the very end that he “owned” what he wanted - he wants to make a decent income, yes, but not at the expense of taking care of the home and being a homebody. And Stacey was ok with that. There is a nuanced difference between “it will never be more than X” and “I don’t want to pursue more than X because it would take away from other things that are important to me”. It’s about taking ownership and responsibility for your actions and decisions. When Stacey said she didn’t think Jesse was being honest/emotionally honest about what he wanted (or didn’t want), she was spot on. Passive behavior in a partner can be extremely difficult (and hurtful/sad) to deal with, especially when you love that person so very much.

As a mom to 2 very young toddlers, this episode shocked and made me cry. I can't fathom not wanting to change to be able to PROVIDE for an innocent child you're bringing into this world very soon. Perhaps the mentality needs to be shifted towards "what is best for my family vs myself in this time-period" I really really really hope they are doing better and able to turn things around. People evolve and they grow and sometimes their partner just doesn’t grow with them. Wow, this was probably the most powerful and my most favorite episode yet 😮 I am so much like Stacey in most things and my husband is like hers in so many things. However, for whatever fluke 😮 when it came down to sitting down and getting a budget together and allocating our money correctly… I would absolutely loose it, I didn’t want part of that but my husband was all about that. So I would pay the bills, when our income increased I would plan our trips etc I planned our house, our kids schools etc but talking about a conscious spending plan… I flipped to not want any of it. So I can be very controlling like Stacey and my husband can be very smooth like hers 🤣 but as far as CSP I for whatever reason flip out. Anyhow, therapy did it for me. We are way passed that and I’m sure they can become a dream team as well! 🎉

My last relationship I was the lead on everything and wished my partner was engaged in the discussion. But he felt like as long as he contributed money than he did enough. Contributing money is the easiest part being actively involved which requires time that you can never get back is the hardest part. Always having to be the decision maker and actively working eventually took a toll on me and our relationship. I still speak to my ex and still have to pull myself back into helping him making financial decisions bc I do want the best for him still but not at the expense of my mental health.

The category discussion was funny, esp since I've been through it. I did this the first year i started tracking our personal expenses and i quickly realized it wasn't serving us to be super specific. So, the next year I cut the list and added a miscellaneous expense for one time expenses that didnt quite fit in any other category. Making the budget with the smaller list was alot easier.

I don't know if I'm the only one seeing this but this reminds me so much of my spouse. Undiagnosed/untreated lifelong ADHD. He just cannot get it together enough to see or plan for the future. I am (and have been) seeing the bigger picture too, but feeling slightly less restrictive now is ONLY possible because I'm getting close to my FIRE goals (recently hit 1.5M). It's because my high savings opened up possibilities. Now I feel more secure about my finances. If you have a conscious and deliberate mindset about your finances, you should be fine. I believe Ramit's general approach to finances can change at a certain level; you _earn_ the right to consider certain views.

I really enjoy the transparency on the show, but I am super curious what makes up their assets. Their mortgage payment is super low and mortgage balance is super low. What assets do they have that are worth that much? I am in similar in age have much higher household income and have about 50% LTV on my mortgage. Would love some more detailed breakdowns of how people get to those types of assets with income that doesn't really justify it.

Ramit, I would like to know how people's attitudes about money affect their job roles. How do people align their attitudes about money with the right job, so they can perform well. How does an organization assure that they don't put managers in the wrong role for their money behaviors. It shocks me to see how some managers have reckless personal behaviors yet are trusted with decisions for an organization, budget etc. Or some are too tight with budget and mistreat their projects and teams. I could not find research on this but I think it's world be enlightening.

May be I am wrong, but I am also someone never felt comfortable for having a net worth including home equity. Especially if my home equity is more than 25% of the net worth. I was exactly like that when I was 37, still felt so poor, and didn’t wanna spend anything. Until when I turned 39, we finally reached the 1 mill milestone on just retirement investment. I also count our kids investments separately. Now that I am 41, I feel like we are low on net worth compare to other folks who are same age as us. Though our gross is 280, not including RSU. Yet again still feel like it’s not good enough. So maybe I am doomed.

I found the way she talked about him to be demeaning and mean. He's just trying to be who he is and it's not good enough for her. They should consider divorce if things don't change. Life's too short to be married to someone who is trying to make and mold you into someone your simply not.
