34 subscribers at this point and nearly a thousand now. I got recommended one of your older videos. This is going to be my next step. I've got my formwork already functioning mostly, for concrete, but I need to start experimenting with how to make rammed earth so I can put it to use on my eventual house build.

Can you just put a stucco coat to keep it together?

Enjoying the video's - what's the mix ratio for the rammed earth, the soil looks sandy, and is there any issue with them being retaining walls i.e. do they take on moisture from the retained side or is a membrane [plastic] or some such added before backfill. Thanks

Chris I sort of explained the mix in the vid and this was our first experimental phase we have come a long way since that time. I am doing about 2 bags of cement to a bucket of Nigel or Billy of earth and a bit of sand I don't have it exact I did measure it our originally and have enough experience now to know what is required. Now it is refined and I am happy with what I have learnt and if you check out later vids or the last one you will see the progression. When are currently having one of the wettest July's in the last 30 years still a week to go. I will do an update vid soon to show the impact of the heavy rain, all the water tanks are full.

You want earth with a content of 20% clay and you need at least 10% cement - more if the soil is very sandy. No biologicals! Mix thoroughly. Compact every few inches - you can go deeper IF you vibrate thoroughly before tamping. Aggragate (gravel) must be small and preferably not more than 10-15%. You're not making concrete.

Thanks Bro! I am a little perplexed as to why this vid has got so many views could it be because I mentioned LGBT in the vid regarding the pink hat. Don't forget to subscribe.

@@offthegriddownunderaustral8814 Personally I'm interested in rammed earth construction and have been watching videos related to that so it was recommended to me due to that.

So I would be interested to see how rammed earth holds up as a container for moist soil. I would think that that stretches the potential a bit but I may be wrong.

Thank you for your interest and your very valid comment. The first panel is a bit dodgy and I am a bit worried it may weather quickly. The others though, might have enough cement content and plasticure (a water proofing agent) to stop them weathering too quickly. I am confident they will last.

@@offthegriddownunderaustral8814 how much cement would you have to use to make the rammed earth truly water right for say a water trough or swimming pool?
@offthegriddownunderaustral88144 жыл бұрын
@@thomasswedlund1097 I think normal concrete has about 30% cement content. Back to your original comment I wouldn't try and use rammed earth for a pool or trough. We have had a bit or rain yesterday, expecting more today they didn't turn to a heap of mud.
@thomasswedlund10974 жыл бұрын
@@offthegriddownunderaustral8814 yes i understand that as it is practiced a rammed wall wouldn't hold a lot of water but I wonder if the concept could be adapted or "tweaked" for instancecwhat would happen if the compression were to be say doubled and the amountvof cement as well to say 10%. Would a wall like that hold water? You would still be saving a lot on cement but the labor of ramming and the cost of heavier forms might undercut the potential savings. These are thought experiments at this point but I'm also doing some experiment myself with different mixtures.

@Darren Munsell when I get a day off my son and i ate exoerimenting with caliche here in West Texas. I don't know if you use that term in Australia but it subsoil with high lime content usually with quite a bit of limestone gravel mixed in it. I havent seen anyone on the web using it so May be I'll post a picture for you later.

I get urea containers for free, and ibc $30-$100 2nd hand. The ibc cut in half for two gardens and same with urea or keep tall for smaller trees. Just keep an eye out on gumtree, or fb marketplace
