The best interpretation I've seen so far says that they try to wipe themselves out of existence, but don't succeed. The band members, resmbling their "Ich will" characters, storm the place where their replicas/clones are kept (reference most likely to "Mutter" - the vault also suggests that). At first, it seems that their plan is going to work and they light themselves - and their clones - on fire. They end up in a "purgatory", locked inside a cell, surrounded by other people - most likely fans. These people hold them back and don't want to let them ascend into, let's say, "eternity". In the end, they manage to break their chains and ascend, but only together with their fans. But in the end, we see that the "Ich will" characters are lying dead on the ground, suggesting that their plan failed. They didn't manage to free themselves, they didn't manage to retire. So they're here to stay. They're here to stay as long as their fans hold on to them.

I think your analysis is good .. but maybe not 100% on the final observation.. ALL the action post the epic entry is in the "next realm" (the dead bodies at the entrance confirm this) so whatever happens success/failure in spirit realm their physical ending is first reality. The action then unfolds in their "next state" which is destroying their false selves and thereby destroying that purgatory style world their souls were kept in ..but in end they are ascending upwards.. my final conclusion is more positive outcome!! 🙂

So many callbacks to other Rammstein music videos. Deutschland, Mutter, Ich will, Sonne, Zeit ect. It really feels like a best of and goodbye. And is the last song of the album and in concerts. Lyrically, the song is also a farewell song.

I like watching "Rammstein reactions" and I have seen a lot of them. You both are my favorite. Why? Because you are so "down to earth". It is a pleasure watching you both as a couple, accepting each other and still both always being self-reflecting on what you say. Also Dominika`s tolerance when you watched "Dicke Titten" or "zickzack". Or the acceptance that there are no subtitles, even though I think as a German I always wish foreign-language-speakers would understand the lyrics. But again, Dominika mentioned that you might not be able to translate everything right, because there often are double (or more) meanings; so another time you are right. Final Point: What you both transport every time? Tolerance, humanity and soul. (no "click the notification bell" or stuff like that). And Soul will always succeed. So I wish you two the best. Okay, the video is the perfect reflection of Rammstein's sense of humour. I'll try to explain it briefly. As you've seen it at the beginning, the inscription on that door was "Mutter 22". And of course there's a reason for that. Inside the most guarded hall of this picturesque museum were embalmed (smth like that) band members from 2001 - a year when Mutter album was released. Actual band members come to this museum to burn their old copies. Then, we see an underground temple with huge statues of band members. And in the centre of it stays a cage where are band members from 2001. This is a direct reference to the "Mutter" video clip, where Till was in the very similar cage. Some shots are almost the perfect copy of Mutter-video. And finally we see, that band members are held as hostages by thousands of embalmed people. At the end the band destroys this temple with their old-time copies and all these 'damned' people as it says. So, the music video is a some sort of answer to all critics and fans, who think that "Mutter" was an iconic album of the band and all their albums shoud sound exactly like "Mutter". That's why they're embalmed -- they're stuck at that time and can't accept the fact that Rammstein develops and their music will never be the same. The group likes that album and that times, so they cry upon their old-time copies. But still, they say goodbye to them.

Das Lied klingt monumental und episch und damit passt es zum Inhalt. Der letzte und endgültige Abschied ist irgendwie immer einzigartig und gewaltig. Ob das Lied jetzt einen aktuellen Bezug auf das Weiterwirken von Rammstein hat, wird die Zeit zeigen. Aus meiner Sicht haben sie damit eine weitere Hymne geschaffen. Die sich natürlich sowohl als Abschlusslied für Konzerte eignet, wie auch für den endgültigen Abschied, so er denn (irgendwann) ansteht.

Sie haben es nicht geschafft, sich zu befreien, sie haben es nicht geschafft, sich zurückzuziehen. Also sind sie hier, um zu bleiben. Solange ihre Fans an ihnen festhalten, werden sie hier bleiben.

The video is great, the music is great, but for me this song is all about the lyrics. I remember listening to "Zeit" album, song by song, from Educatedmarine channel, because I wanted to know what they were singing about and (apart from "Zeit" song which was released before the album) "Adieu" was the only song that made me cry. But I remember crying hopelessly. It hit me with such a force, especially because there was a rumor and I really believed it that it was the end of the band and their way to say goodbye. And I still cry like crazy everytime I listen to it and reading the lyrics. I cannot help it. It breaks my heart. Because even if this is not the end now, it will be one day and considering their age it wil not be in a distant future. And they mean the world to me, when it happens I know I will be crushed. And it might sound silly and childish, but that's how I feel about Rammstein and each member of the band. They are my saviors, my family, my best friends, my world... Damn, sorry, I got too emotional... Love your reaction and l am so glad you fully understand what Rammstein is all about. And I knew you would grow to love them since your second reaction to them. I feel exactly the same way with you. I follow them since 1997 when a magical night I saw Lost highway at the movies. That was it. Hearing the first song I was immediately captured by them. I saw them live in my country in 2010 and ever since they never came again. Unfortunately I can't afford to travel so I have my hopes up either for them to come again or me to be able to travel after 2023 !!!

I have never seen them live and it is only my fault because they had a concert in my country once but that was a period of my life when, out of my own stupidity, I didn't listen to them, I even forgot about them, even though I became a big fan around 2000 and loved them for quite some time. I am angry with myself that I missed so many years and missed the only concert I was actually able to go at that time. Now they are not coming here anymore and I don't have money to travel anywhere to see them. I even cannot afford the ticket or a t-shirt, or a damn lighter. Haha... it's ironic... But I am trying to be satisfied with their music and with the fact that no one can steal it from me. No matter what, I will have their music with me and in my heart. There are no words to express how big my love is for them. And, actually, I am really grateful that I can say what I feel and think inside of this community. But Rammstein is different, their fans are different and I know many of them are "damaged" in some way, just like me, so I kinda feel home among people who truly love them. @Jovana KK yes you are right about me having the opportunity to see them once in my life. I am really grateful for that honesty. But believe it or not my memories from this concert are little. I don't know why maybe because my memory is not to good and I keep forgetting things very often 😞 Of course I remember my excitement, me having a great time but I can't remember anything from their show....I remember all the fire , his voice but nothing else. We both can't afford to travel at moment but I am certain that they will keep having tours and that we will have the opportunity to see them live 😊 You know they are not that old and they are at the peak of their career in perfect shape 👌 so I don't believe it's a goodbye song. It's just a title and they sing about them. That's why all the references to their older and new songs and videos!!!!

What a nice surprise, without a warning ♥Thank you for this reaction! At first I didn't appreciate "Adieu", maybe because it was making me sad and afraid of the band's end. But when I heard it at the end of the concert, tears just came to my eyes. This song may be slow, but it is so powerful! This video brought up so many things - at countdown we still see the coffin with Germania and the source of the red laser, we have "Ich Will" vibes, "Zeit" band on Christoph's eyes, "Mutter-22" on the door, clones like in "Mutter" lyrics, cage as in Mutter video... General idea seems to be Rammstein cutting away from their past - not without remorse. Also, they show that no matter how strong fans are trying to influence them - they will always in the end do what they want. Pure Rammstein. Have a great day! ♥

At the beginning some important references in the video for interpretation: -References to religion are present throughout the video. The costumes that the band wears, the purification by fire, the scene where the band flies away in a whirlwind; -The scene where Till passes his head outside the truck resembles one of the scenes of "Batman: The Dark Knight". Paul has a "Joker" badge on his jacket; -The truck's plate reads "LI FAD 6", a reference to Rammstein's sixth album; -The guard passing through the window has a "Universal Music" badge. The entrance to the Opera House also says "Universal"; -The fight scene has several "Matrix" references; -It is written "Mutter 22" next to the armored door of the chambers room. Flake's computer program looks like the artwork from the Mutter album; -The busts used on the artwork of Video 1995-2012 are visible on the screens next to the caissons; -On the gas can, a flower can be seen like on the album Herzeleid; -The scene where the band floats in the sky is a reference to the movie "The Immortals"; -The red lasers are of course the same as the ones in the video Deutschland At the beginning, the band sits heavily armed in a troop transport as a kind of special task force and drives through a city at night while Till Lindemann sticks his head out of the window - just like the Joker in the DC film "Batman: The Dark Knight". . The goal seems to be a red cone of light that shines out of an opera house/church/cathedral into the cloudy sky. The many Christian symbols that the viewer can discover in the car are striking in the first few seconds: a crucifix on the mirror, a Bible from which one page is torn, crosses as tattoos on the faces of the band members. A nod to the religious worship of rock stars and the great expectations of the band , which has always been very distressing for Rammstein. They celebrate the last supper - with cigarettes and liquor from a hip flask, similar to how Rammstein always does before they start a concert. The van stops, the band storms into the Opera/Church/Cathedral which is the powerful headquarters of Universal Music, to which Rammstein is contracted, while the car's license plate clearly reads "Lifad 6" - an acronym for the sixth Rammstein album "Love is for everyone" (Album „Liebe ist für alle da“). A wild shootout begins. The band fights their way to a heavy metal door marked "Mother-22". This is also a reference to an earlier album of the same name. In addition, the band obviously wears their style of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Till Lindemann, with black make-up and a mohawk, guitarist Richard Kruspe with jet-black hair that hangs in his face. As the band members enter the room, they find their own bodies preserved in cryochambers. They mourn briefly and set the room on fire, apparently an older version of themselves. Her appearance is strongly reminiscent of the cover of "Mother". The time around this album "Mutter" seems to have been central for the further career of the band. In several documentaries, the musicians stated that they almost broke up during this phase. The USA tour at that time was canceled - allegedly for health reasons. The main reason for the dispute was the different ideas of how one wanted to develop artistically. At that time, Till shot the video for the song Mother alone without the other band members. The band was about to break up and started doing therapy sessions together. It also fits this picture that the band in the video for "Adieu" finds itself in a cage in the form of a Rammstein logo, similar to Till Lindemann in the video “Mutter”, besieged by hordes of zombie-like creatures that are apparently supposed to represent their fans - trapped in the Success. After being overwhelmed by their "fans", the band members ascend to heaven. You can see her now, except for Lindemann, without make-up, freshly styled, apparently content. In exactly the same way, they throw themselves into the abyss (hell), from which the red cone of light shines. In Hell, they free themselves from the chains and thus free themselves. They crumble to dust and break out of the cage they were held in The band addresses their career and the "turning point" after the album "Mutter", which almost led to their separation from Rammstein. In the video, this change is probably symbolized by the fact that the "new" version of Rammstein, who storms into the opera, had to kill her old one, because otherwise she would have perished herself. The band members are preserved in the "Mother" room and their current versions march in and torch their clones with a petrol can. Are they not saying goodbye to the band, to themselves, as many believe, but to the idea of disbanding? It's an interpretation that also fits with a statement by guitarist Paul Landers: When meeting a fan before one of the concerts on the European tour, he stated that "Adieu" was not a farewell because all members still had a lot of fun with Rammstein. Rammstein never thought about quitting. The songs on the new album „Zeit“ are based on experiences and losses that the band members had to go through. Now that they have reinvented themselves and have all the freedom, they are able to face the pressure and expectations and break out of the "cage" on their own. The footage of the video, in which the band members are shot dead on the ground, shows Rammstein what would have happened if they hadn't managed to reinvent themselves. If the musicians hadn't managed to get into the room marked "Mother" and self-destruct there, they would be dead by now. So if they hadn't settled their disagreements at the time, Rammstein would have been long gone. Rammstein has overcome the times when there were many thoughts of quitting.

So glad they did this one. When this first released, a few rumors floated that this was a goodbye song (obviously correct, but not in that way). I knew the band wasn't planning on a goodbye yet, but that split second of that idea was sheer panic. They seem to get better with time. I feel they've earned a break, but where would we be without them? And the way they address topics? It will be a sad day when they do eventually stop being Rammstein. Who knows though....maybe they got a couple more surprises for us. :)

Hi, great video and reaction, to me this means that they are slaves to the show, they are chained to their fans, to the scene, but now they are getting older and show-business has produced clones of them to keep the show going even after they are dead. Rammstein do not want this and storm the place and kill the clones so that they can be free and say goodbye to everyone, however in the end it is shown that they did not accomplish this and died on the steps to the door. So the clones are still alive and the show will keep going on forever... It is sad and controversial but at the same time incredibly beautiful, typical Rammstein, another masterpiece. Cheers

Yesterday I was shocked, now with you just hearing and remember the images from video I understand. I agree with the comments. I interpreted they are like cryonized = live forever although seems "Ohne Condom" 😂 but "Zeit" at the end remember us we born to die. At the beginning some scenes remember me "Du hast", "Ich will", "Dicken T" = Kr blind his eyes with a black bandage...and more along the video as 💕"Mutter" we are there together and they are coming make us free... Just precious 💞 They're crying not because they kill themselves keeping together "Ohne Dich", but because the finish of their career and lives is coming and for us too. What they kill is the false idea ="Lügen" to live forever = "Zig-Zag". I think they make a tribute to their fans, then listening the lyrics all together makes sense to me, all we listen to them from the beginning or later, feel as a family, as an "Army", sharing our feelings and our "Zeit" together in this "Reise" call "Rammstein". to me it's simply a closer. it doubles up as the closer for this album and any live performance. i think they had fun playing with words. everything BUT the german "auf wiedersehen" has a finality to it. but the german commonly used "auf wiedersehen" literally translates to "looking forward to see you again". so it reads like goodbye while it is auf wiedersehen.

I've read that Rammstein was asked whether this is a goodbye of the band and they answered that this is not their intention and they don't have plans to end up with their music. The whole album - which has a kind of melancholic touch (even in the funny tracks) - was made under the impression of personal losses of the band members. In this context, "Adieu" looks to me as the feeling of a lost fight against death ... not of the own death, but of beloved ones ... and to finally accept that there is nothing to stop it. A kind of sad acceptance of the inevitable.

Its a combination and lots of references in order videos of them. Like mutter, ich will, mein hertz Brent..... And definitely it's not a goodbye song as most people think 😊 My guessing is that they say goodbye to their old music and go on !!!!

As far as i Know, Zeit was their last album and they announced to not release any more new albums. In this video and also in the lyrics have lots of messages to other songs/albums and fairly saying goodbye. One of them was Mutter as Andrei saw. Entrance felt like Ich Will official video guns blazing. There are Deutschland effects as laser beams and lots of art. This music video is very confusing. I think the problem is that the original song had a certain idea, but the director of the video (more like the movie) changes the original clear meaning. But this has also happened in other Rammstein music videos. So if I interpret this video from the position of the lyrics of the song, then it is a dark meditation on a life that is heading towards death. A person can try to fight death (crusade - the cross is on Till's neck, it also appears on the windshield of the van, the minigun shooter's mask has the shape of a cross). But the very symbol of the cross is ambiguous - it symbolizes death (cemeteries) on the one hand, but faith on the other hand (existence does not end with death). But Rammstein declared themselves atheists. So the fight is futile. The scene of hell and ascension may mean reflection on the dual possibility of existence after death. But (according to atheism) the hell scene can also mean suffering during life - we are attacked by our own demons, doubts and fear of death. The "ascension" scene is taken from the movie "The immortals" - the fight between the Titans and the Gods. We know the Titans have been defeated. Man cannot win over death. So he has to accept her. But nothingness also means the end of all suffering. The only thing a man can do and what gives him greatness is to accompany his fellows to the brink of death and not forget them. Rammstein destroys their bodies in cryochambers - there is no point in trying to prolong life artificially (e.g. vegetative "life", when the body is connected to equipment - ICU in a hospital). The "overthrow of the deities" scene - takes place under a dome that looks exactly like the Pantheon in Rome. Pantheon means "temple of all gods". I understand it in the sense of "God is dead and we have killed him" (Nietzsche). It may mean that they proudly reject the illusory hope offered by religion. At the end, Rammstein lie dead - they lost the fight, but that doesn't mean it was pointless. Death cannot lose - we always lose in a match with it. But the real defeat would be passive surrender - life's fatalism, that's why even a lost battle in advance has a meaning.

How to get the lyrics in english (and why it is so hard to translate Rammstein's songs): If you want to see English subtitles, switch on subtitles (even if they are only available in German), go to settings, click on subtitles, if no English subtitles are available, choose automatic translation and then English. The automatic translations are sometimes a bit rough and imprecise but normally sufficient to get the main sense of the lyrics. In case of Rammstein, precise translations of the lyrics is hard work, because they are playing many times with double meanings of words or slightly modify common German expressions and symbolic language pictures to invert or change their meanings. (That is even used in the very simple lyrics of "Du hast".)
