I live north of the Arctic circle. We have no sun for almost 4 months a year. Every February the sun returns, and that day I drive to a lookout point and play this song and sing along as I watch the light wash over the landscape. Been doing this for 9 years now.

Sonne was written as entrance for Vitali Klitschko, but rejected. When it came out, I used to listen to it every morning to welcome the daylight, for months. As you say, you're ready for anything after that. I'd been listening to heavy metal all my life by the time Rammstein popped into the scene, so I was used to dark, weird imagery, but I can understand why not everyone would feel attracted. They're a lot to take in at first sight. I'm forever thankful to David Lynch for including them in the soundtrack for his Lost Highway film. I can still feel to this day my "What the hell is that...?!" reaction when Heirate Mich started, so visceral.

Bit of a background for you guys. This song was written for one of the Klitschco brothers as a entrance theme to the boxing ring. However the management of said fighter decided the song was too heavy so they didn't go with it. Hence the lyrics referring to sun shining out of his fists. Also the standing 8 count thst goes on in the background.

Forget to try to find common ground between the lyrics and the video.... That song was supposed to be a comission work by Rammstein for a hym for one of the Klitschko brothers for entering the box ring. the song starts with counting from one to ten ending with "out"...a reference for a knocked down boxer in the box ring. Counting till ten is a major part of the lyrics in general. "hier kommt die Sonne/Here comes the Sun" is the reference to Klitscko himself entering the box ring in order to fight and "sie wird heute Nacht nicht untergehen/she won´t go down today" = reference to "Klitschko will not loose the fight"...the line "the sun is the brightest star of all" is a reference to the phenomenon that when someone got knocked down the knocked down person is seeing stars in his visual field because of the body shock...and the brightest star is the one at the impact caused in that case by Klitschko who won most of his fights with a knock down = the Sun is the brightest star of all. Just to name a few references but every line of the lyrics put in context with a boxer and a box fight does make way more sense than with the shown video...just saying Unfortunately for what ever reason the managment of Klitschko didn´t like the song and refused it I think they didn´t understand the synonyms at all or it was too subtile for them.. So Rammstein decided to use the song for themselves simply because it was way too good for the bin....they even used then the chorus melody again for the credits at their Deutschland video played by piano. Shot then a random video (random just in behalf of the original meaning of the lyrics I have no intend to belittle their video) and released it.

In the German language, we use a feminine pronoun for the sun. So it is not "it", but "she". The sun is also the woman. In the English translation, this can be a bit confusing when "it" is spoken of in connection with a woman.

It was originally written as the entrance song of a famous German Boxing star which makes you understand the lyrics even better, but for whatever reason it didn't end up as such. Also cool: the live versions of this song are the ones with the most fire and flames. Highly recommend as the flames are not only coming from the floor but also from the ceiling and the side walls and literally everywhere 🙈

Yes, live version would be better for the reaction and also it sounds and looks great with all the fire and crowd usually singing parts of it, but I am sooo glad you like this song anyway, because I truly adore it. It is, along with "Mutter", song that made me really fall in love with Rammstein. And this chorus is probably the most repeated melody in my head. Whenever I feel like singing something, this chorus is in my mind. And btw, this is one of the most famous Rammstein songs. I think there is no a single concert since 2001 where they didn't play it.

Your intuition is so strong Dominica. This one is an absolut live banger. In the newer live performances it is the hottests song if you know what i mean. I experienced it now 3 times live. 2 times in germany and one time i traveled to sweden. Also if you watch it again with the lyrics: Keep in mind that Rammstein wrote it for a famous boxer as the entrance song. As I remember correctly he didnt chose the song in the end. Jokes on him. This is a banger for sure. And read the lyrics while thinking about boxing. It all makes sense then. ;-)
