Usually I'm sick of the overabundance of 2D/2.5D modern games, but in Rampage's case, 2.5D is the play. With online and local multiplayer. I'm surprised how static the backgrounds were in World Tour-Through Time.

I'm probably about as "hardcore"of a Rampage fan as you're ever going to get... and yeah I'm baffled too. The problem is that Rampage is a parody of monster movies that uses painfully obvious expy characters of other movie monsters (at least at first), so how is that a movie? Godzilla, King Kong, and werewolf movies already exist, so it would have to be like a satire, right? But the movie awkwardly takes itself too seriously like it's a real monster movie. They even made George white because otherwise he'd just look too much like King Kong from the fucking ACTUAL King Kong movie that came out the year before. It's just not a thing that ever needed to exist. But I'm glad it does, because it's so... weird. And it's good, too, like unironically. Somehow they managed to juggle being a comedy, being a video game adaptation, and being a fun monster movie with the Rock in a way that kinda works even though you can see the seams. Not gonna recommend it over the King Kong movie the year before or either of the two Godzilla movies that came out the SAME year as Rampage, but it's fine. Anyhow, since no one else cares enough to play the pedantic "well actually" nerd for these games, I'll handle this: 1. The arcade game is an arcade game. That means on the cabinet there are three sets of joysticks and punch/jump buttons. You put your quarters in, and press the corresponding start button for the monster you want to play. On emulated ports, this translates into each monster being tied to 1st, 2nd, or 3rd player, meaning if you're playing it on a home console and don't want to be George, you gotta plug in some extra controllers. As one of the directors of the game, Brian Collins, will tell you, the original is purely an arcade thing and if you're not playing it in that environment, you're not really playing it. The reason the game barely has any music or sound is to keep a low profile in the cacophonous den of howls that is an 80's arcade. 2. The giant blob monster in World Tour is not Eustace himself, but something called "E.D.N.A." which stands for "Executive DNA." There are several, all cloned from Eustace's DNA but mutated into some kinda blob monster. In the secret levels "Warehouse" and "Underworld," and I think some other end game levels too, you can see large tanks where they are growing these things. You can eat the juvenile "E.D.N.A.s" in the tanks for food by punching down, but if you try it with an empty tank you barf. You asked about the deep, deep lore of Rampage? Well... the robots have names too, you know... 3. Unfortunately I have no answers for you about the discontinuity between World Tour and the Avalanche games. It's just a plot hole. Obviously they didn't think anyone would care. 4. Those bootleg Ted Coppel cutscenes are the fucking bomb you're way in the wrong there. 5. There is a way to play without the AI characters in Through Time, two ways, actually. The obvious one is to play with three people, but there's also a gameshark code that opens a "Round Test" option under "Start Game." I don't remember it off hand but it's on the Cutting Room Floor entry for the game. This is the only way to play the three boss level cities outside of the single player campaign. Which kinda sucks because you can't play with other people, which sort of kills the point of Rampage? But it's a hell of a lot better than playing the game the way they intended! 6. The series isn't dead. There were two games released in conjunction with the movie. There's an arcade game at Dave & Buster's that spits out tickets and plays like a gutted version of the 2D games with the block structure and some 3D movement from Total Destruction. There is literally only one button and a joystick. It's as bare bones as possible but the presentation is nice. There is also a VR game which is EXACTLY where the series needed to go. The game is fairly shallow in content but they structure it so that everything unlocks gradually and sort of artificially inflates the gameplay, which is absolutely solid and exactly what it needs to be. There's a strange RPG-like system where the monsters can be outfitted with various genes that affect their stats or give them new abilities. It's pretty great, honestly. Finally, the real answer to your kind of underlying existential confusion here is that the Rampage brand and IP have as much value to Warner Bros. who now owns all of Midway's IP's as they do to anyone else. Midway for a while wanted to milk it, sure, but that was something of an anomaly. Rampage is the kind of thing that has consistent recognition and is remembered fondly even if most of the time most people don't think the games are any good. Every 10 years or so they will reboot the brand as a budget title and have some success as a fun party game and then quickly fade back into obscurity only to be remembered as that one classic arcade game from the 80's by pretty much everyone. It's not really a cash grab, and it's not really a thriving franchise either, it's somewhere in the middle where it has value, but only in a circumstantial way. It's in the same boat as stuff like Frogger, Centipede, Pac-Man, and even to a degree Pong. Every once in a while someone wants to do a revival of historically relevant games and then after releasing it realizes they didn't become large franchises for a reason. I know this comment is outrageously and disproportionately long and detailed... but you made a fucking 45 minute long video about these games, so we're in the same boat here. Basically my way of saying that I wouldn't have bothered if I didn't appreciate the amount of effort you put into this against all good sense. So thanks for taking the time, I appreciate it at least.
@TheRedGuy
@TheRedGuy 5 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the lengthy comment, I appreciate it! Not too many Rampage fans out there lol 1 Ah that makes a lot of sense. 2 Oh really? I didn't know there were secret levels. Are they in all versions? How do you get to them? 4 They would make excellent KZbin Poop material. 5 When you need gameshark to make the game playable... 6 Actually I hadn't heard of any new Rampage game when I made this, but shortly after I found out about the arcade one, was kicking myself a bit since I didn't mention it in this video. But I didn't know at all about the VR one. Again thanks for the comment! It's nice when you think you know a lot about the subject but someone else teaches you even more about it. I wonder, as about as "hardcore" of a Rampage fan as you are, which is your favorite of the bunch?

I'm surprised that you didn't touch on the hidden lore of the first game. There are codes that let you access secret levels that reveal Eustas DeMonic is actually from hell and has multiple clones of himself kept inside of tubes. I believe the reason as to why he becomes bloated is that he intentionally mutated himself in an attempt to take down the monsters and save his brand, but that may just be fan speculation.

I played most of the games in the Rampage series in one form or another. I played the original 1986 arcade game through Midway Arcade Treasures for Nintendo GameCube. I had both Rampage: World Tour and Rampage 2: Universal Tour for Nintendo 64. I even got to play the Rampage: World Tour arcade machine at Hershey Park. The only 2 games I didn’t play were Rampage Through Time for the PlayStation and Rampage Puzzle Attack for Game Boy Advance. I had Rampage: Total Destruction for both Nintendo GameCube and Wii. I prefer the GameCube version as the controls are much better than the Wii version. As for the movie itself, I actually enjoyed it. It was also the first movie based on a video game series that I actually watched in theaters when it released. I loved that George, Lizzie, and Ralph were featured in the movie. The plot is admittedly very ridiculous, especially with the villain’s plan as well as some of the jokes. But it’s still fun to see the monsters attack Chicago. My ranking of the Rampage games I played: 1. Rampage: World Tour for Nintendo 64 2. Rampage: Total Destruction for Nintendo GameCube 3. Rampage 2: Universal Tour for Nintendo 64 4. Rampage 1986 Arcade Game

I was 7 when Total Destruction came out, so I pretty much own every Rampage game besides Through Time and Puzzle Attack, and I gotta say, I love these games for the most part. I agree that Universal Tour is probably the best though even though I grew up with Total Destruction more on the PS2. I’d say when it comes to the list of my favorites, it has to be Universal Tour first, then Total Destruction, then World Tour, and then the arcade original. Never played Through Time, but I think it’s safe to say that it easily looks to be the worst experience. If somebody could just mod in the extra levels from that game without the AI, Harley, and more new monsters into Universal Tour, then honestly that would good good enough. It’s easily the best Rampage game of all time and has all the elements it needs to tie it together. Total Destruction kinda tried to do the same thing and even brought back Boris, Ruby and Vern in the Wii version, (no other ones though which is weird) it kinda falls flat on its face by trying too hard as apposed to just making a simple fast paced and satisfying game. Total Destruction basically went the opposite direction with its approach and went full on cartoon, which is perfectly fine for background stuff like the cutscenes, which surprisingly aren’t cringy, but at the same time they took it to the monsters as well and sacrificed everything that was unique about the previous and newer ones into full blown caricatures. I would’ve much preferred to have Curtis back rather than “Rhett”, which is probably one of the worst characters in that game. And instead of doing something much more unique and interesting like a monster with a brain floating in a jar with cords for limbs or something, they instead just put in some weird unspecified creature with a brain for its forehead with Brian. It’s like it *wants* to be creative, but at the same time it doesn’t want to actually be interesting. It’s weird. Even freaking Harley, which I never cared about, was replaced by Wally, which also looks worse. I mean at least the original three and one and a half of the second generation make it in the game for the Wii, (I say half because for Ruby they exaggerated her lobster appearance much more for some reason) but other than that most of the monsters are stereotypical, aside from a few standouts that could actually work like Marco, Nick, Venus, Shelby, Crock, Rojo, Kingston, Icky and Natalie. I mean come on, monsters like Amanda, Edwin, Joe, Plucky and Fabio don’t even look like they come from the same game! It’s like... half of the ideas are good, and half are bad, I dunno. I do still like the game itself though, because as flawed as it is, even without my nostalgia goggles and having nothing to remember from the extra Wii content, I still think that game is charming, in its own way of course. I do think the gameplay aesthetic of Universal Tour is the perfect balance between the arcade original and slightly cartoony though. They really should’ve just stuck to the ideas that World Tour and Universal Tour presented, and Through Time is a good example of how *not* to change it. I really do want a new Rampage game though. It’s been over 15 years since we got the last one, it’s time to reintroduce it into the modern age! Even if it’s just re-releases of the arcade, World Tour and Universal Tour, with Universal Tour having added content like the Doom and Duke Nukem Switch ports, with online co-op to 4 players, custom new levels, more added monsters overtime, etc., then that would honestly be a dream come true! Universal Tour is criminally underrated, and I suggest checking it out. There really needs to be a modding community behind that thing, so much more potential can come from it when properly used. Fun fact though, I think Noobus is a reference to Noob Saibot with how dark he is, and Ed Boon, as evidenced by the code, “SRY3D”, which roughly translated to “Sorry Ed”, and explains why he’s only unlockable through cheats in normal gameplay, so that’s kinda cool. And I think Myuckus changed from primarily green/teal to purple so quickly because he looks much more visually interesting that way, and to probably set him more apart from Lizzie. I don’t blame them though, he does look better in purple. No surprise then that his purple variant in Universal Tour also has the best stats. They probably only even kept the green version in the first place probably as a result of the already finished and rendered cutscenes, and it would’ve been more difficult back then to recollect the FMV model. Even with Through Time, with what little the new FMV’s it has, (only two of them for the monsters, the other for Harley) still depicts him as purple finally over there with a different cutscene, as seen here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYanhY19abyXetk, so that’s probably the main reason.

38:16 actually, while normal food and hazards are randomized, ones related to challenges are always in the same place, but unless you made a walkthrough like I did (because I'm a fucking loser), it'll be impossible to remember the locations. I also think that the GameCube version is MUCH better than the Wii version. While having Boris, Ruby, and VERN all back is nice, squirmy and sarah are legitimately awesome, and destroying Texas is nice, the other monsters are really dumb and not worth the much worse controls. The GameCube controller works great for the game and in my opinion is a lot smoother. If I had to rank all of them, I'd say total Destruction, Universal tour, World tour, the Wii port, puzzle attack, the original, and finally through time.

If you stopped caring years ago that means you were never a fan to begin with don't call yourself a fan you don't get that

When did I say I was a fan? I thought it was funny they were making a movie out of this obscure series that I had a few games from. Figured I'd use it as an excuse to not only talk about how I liked Universal Tour, but also to experience the other games I didn't play, or barely played. I stopped caring years ago, because the series was dead and I only ever even liked one game anyways. What is your problem?
