Bobbing and weaving is not ducking and squatting. To bob and weave is do two things: level change vertically and angle change horizontally. This involves hinging at the hip in a short bowing motion as taught by former heavyweight boxing champion and legend Jack Dempsey in his excellent book “Championship Fighting: Explosive Punching and Aggressive Defense”.
But many boxing enthusiasts attempt to bob and weave by level changing with a squat. This has the unfortunate side effect of (1) being far too slow to be practical and (2) locking the fighter in place so they will not be able to improve their position while their opponent can simply continue punching from an advantageous angle.
Additionally, some popular martial arts youtubers have gone on to erroneously teach that bobbing and weaving is the same as broken posture that will result in giving up control to your opponent should he choose to initiate a clinch. This nonsense is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of what bobbing and weaving actually is.
In this video I will teach you to keep your posture unbroken, and use your footwork and level changes to create angles that cannot be countered with a collar tie or a snap down. Why? Because you won’t even be there to be grabbed in the first place!
Let’s analyze the infamous “Dempsey Roll” as demonstrated by Jack Dempsey in the 1919 boxing heavyweight championship when Dempsey knocked down Jess Willard with the eponymous technique. What did Dempsey do 103 years ago that modern combat sports athletes can learn from today in boxing, kickboxing, and MMA? A great deal.
It’s an incredibly simple concept, but a widely misunderstood one. Let’s dispel the myths and get to the truth of the matter.

Some great tips here coach. The best person I ever sparred against bobbed all the time and when I asked him what he was doing he couldn't articulate it. It took me so long to discover the bob which is very different to how most boxing gyms teach it which is bending the knees and weaving as if you're drawing a circle with your nose. To bob is more of a bow than a duck - a world of difference. It's really good to bob and move in at the same time if you are an inside fighter - block the jab, bob when the right hand comes and move in. The two techniques between the bob and the duck have been confused over time.

Have you read Jack Dempsey’s book “Championship fighting: Explosive Punching and Aggressive Defense”? (If not, go read it- it’s public domain!) And if so, do you think Dempsey’s techniques are outdated by the standards of modern combat sports?

I'm reading it at the moment (and although I'm no fighter, I just practice on the heavy bag) and I'm really loving the amount of power I can get with my punches simply using my bodyweight and taking advantage of the different positions of my body to generate more power. Rotating from my hip when doing shovel hooks and hooks from shoulder whirls in general often come to mind, as well as the step jab also! (or as he calls it, the "left jolt") Really struggling with hitting using the 3 knuckles on my hands though, and they frequently get bruised and my hands hurt after every session haha.

NO! I think alot more MMA fighters should study Dempsey and even Lee's style of punching and body mechanics. Vertical fist fighters, like Dempsey and Tyson, often hit harder and have better body mechanics and structure to their punches. Jon Jones uses mostly vertical fist, Israel Adesanya's does too and his jab is basically a perfect representation of the kind of Step Demspey talked about eith the jab. Israel will be about 60% front foot and often lifts the front foot with the punch; causing him to step with his jab and he lands with the bottom three knuckles. Izzy probably has one of the best jabs in MMA, both powerside forward jabs and powerside back (he's ambidextrous now, but born left handed)

Great video! Love the addition of the Dempsey roll. The duck only works well in boxing, especially with a height difference. If you time it right, pausing just as your rise from the duck, your opponent will usually strike, by that time you’re already slipping. Mike Tyson used this really well.

Good one, show that 'Hard2Hurt' channel guy [Icy Mike]; who criticized me when I told him that he was wasting energy in squatting ! Tho personally when I do the 'weave' it's more of a bob at pronounced 45° angle, also punching to the stomach - and practicing this I think could help your hooks a lot (but here doing them with only a half torso bend). Also using small knuckle for hooks & horizontal punches, as well as with the vertical punch - because I notice that those who advocate using the two big innermost knuckles when punching horizontal fist, always do their hooks suddenly off to the side when the target is still directly in front of them ! Hence punching with more diagonal torso leverage [or as described earlier, half bob at 45°]; as well as power emanating from the small knuckle, could remedy this.

Forgot to mention: that student you have there seems to be doing it via squatting - tell her to use more 'kung fu bow' motion, as if balancing a cup of tea on her back while avoid spilling it.

hey Ramsey! i've been following your channel for a while now. i don't mean to make this long but i'm a 21-year-old aspiring MMA fighter. i've done Japanese Goshinjutsu JiuJitsu (you should probably explain the difference between that and BJJ for the ppl who don't know cause most ppl do have a misconception that BJJ is the only Jiu Jitsu lol) since i was 6 or 7 up until i was 13 and i rekindled my passion to be an MMA fighter later in my teens; by the time I was mentally and financially prepared to step into a gym,, Corona had taken over and the country was on a lockdown. i've spent almost all my time that i was out of a dojo researching the biomechanics and technical movements and microadjustments of properly throwing strikes,, footwork,, head movement,, hand-fighting,, and grappling along with the help of your channel and applying them and practicing,, to the point I can even pick out some of my own flaws in striking and correcting them in real time. i'm planning on finally going to this "MMA" gym to work on Kickboxing and BJJ (not so much wrestling yet as I am more comfortable with the base principles of Boxing && Jiu Jitsu as of right now,, and I'm looking to improve on my developed skills before acquiring new skills). Ik once I get to the gym if I can get a trainer they are going to work on fine- tuning the skills I already have developed over the years and introducing me to new techniques for MMA-based combat. However,, I would still like to use your channel on my journey. Do you have any tips in terms of a solid gameplan for a short (5ft/152cm) slim- athletic build MMA fighter? I know every guy I will get into the ring or cage with will have at least significant height,, weight and/or reach advantages over me but I am a very solid defensive fighter and I am just looking for all the edge I can get. I'm already very aware when it comes to positioning and shot selection from different angles,, but I guess what I'm asking is for some additional tips I can use for attempting TDs being at a severe disadvantage and closing what will be a major distance gap for striking? I'm not a big fan of the "Swarmer" archetype and I much prefer using patience,, footwork and head movement to counterstrike but it seems as if swarming is the most effective for shorter fighters. Me being as short as I am,, I was just wondering if you had any techniques you might have used to help me out in my journey to be the very best fighter I can be. Big fan thank you in advance

@Ramsey Dewey - I have a question. I've seen you do videos with Jesse Encamp about parts of karate that are misinterpreted or lost. I practice tai chi chuan, (as a form of physio, I'm not climbing into an MMA ring or anything), and in my form there is a part which looks a lot like the rope drill. The transfer of weight from one foot to the other is almost the same, and you are leaning in with a straight back with your head directly above your foot. (Obviously, it isn't anything like as slick when I do it.) Anyhow, is this one of those situations where the skill exists, it's just been forgotten? I mean, there are a lot of wrist and arm locks in my style that are basically Ju Jitsu. (No, I'm not getting into that ring either). Do you think we Tai Chi practitioners can learn from our utter destruction in the ring, or should we bite the bullet and learn something else as well? Feels a bit like we're past the point of no return when it comes to combat sports...

Thank you so much for this vid. I always thought by watching pros that it didn't matter if you didn't cut an angle when bobbing as long as you came back with a fast counter but when I actually try this it doesn't work against combos, I hit and get hit and it's really random who gets hit the hardest. So should I always cut an angle? Also, can I break a combo in the middle with slip and counter, like a cross-hook can I slip the cross outside and not get hit with the hook, I find that sort of situations hard to deal with and prefer to counter as I slip (example: slip and hit with my cross at the same time they throw the cross) but I see pros doing slip and counter all the time, it just doesn't seem to make sense for me but I know it would give me more options to deal with pressure better and not be predictable in my counters. Could you make a video about countering someone in the middle of their combination?

Needs mentioning, but if you break that posture and expose the back of your head, you're getting tossed for dangerous boxing! Thanks, this is a great break-down; like a lot of folks, I got completely mis-trained on how this is supposed to work.

I was initially going to click off because I already knew how to bob and weave. But then I saw the other parts of the video and stayed to learn. :)

Oh gosh, I was looking foward for you to talk about bobing and weaving, but then the kid stole the scene, lol. Great video anyway!

Fantastic video! I'm working on selecting a minimum number of techniques to practice to become a "good enough" fighter. Ideally, they'd all fit into one form that I could practice every day for the rest of my life. The Dempsey Roll seems like a good choice. I imagine that having that drilled into my muscle memory would be fantastic if anyone ever threw a punch at me. Any recommendations for other techniques for a "minimalist" martial art? Context. I'm 41, I've never been in a fight, I don't expect to get in one in the future. I've had no formal martial arts training, and my exercise consists of a 20 minute kettlebell routine 3-5 days a week. Most likely I'll just add doing my form to the beginning or ending of my workout. I know this will only yield mediocre results, but it's all my life can support. I'm taking inspiration from Bruce Lee's "“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” Since I'm not going to spend a ton of time training, choosing the fewest kicks, punches or whatevers to focus on seems smart, but just training one kick and never anything else probably wouldn't be smart either. Or would a better use of my time be learning one existing form or kata?

Working kata, shadowboxing or solo work in general won't likely help you in a fight. It's likely to do the opposite by giving you a false sense of confidence. You absolutely need to join a gym and spar and do partner drills if you want to get better. There's no other way.

@@jordanmartens5591 "I know this will only yield mediocre results, but it's all my life can support." I promise you I won't be confident, let alone falsely confident. Again, the odds that I'll ever be in a fight are so low, that this is barely worth any effort. But I think having *some* amount of skill will be better than zero, and that will at least be motivation to keep at it, which will at least be good for upping my activity level. Dedicating my life to martial arts will yield better results than just joining a gym. You seem to think joining a gym is a minimum, and I'm telling you I've decided to set my bar lower than that. Everyone has to decide how to prioritize the precious time we've got. If you've got any tips on how to get the most out of the time I've described setting aside (a few minutes a day, on my own), I'd love to hear them.

I appreciate you Ramsey Dewey and I've learned a lot from your tutorials and instruction. But here I'm going to respectfully suggest that you review Rolling, specifically rolling under a hook vs Bobbing and Weaving. If you step to the side and end up at your opponent's 45 degrees or to his side... you've Rolled (possibly under a straight punch, but more likely under his hook to your head).

Freaking finally! It never made sense to squat - it was just too slow and energy consuming. Somehow, I find that all gyms in my area teach the vertical level change without the horizontal one (even though I'm Filipino and boxing is so prevalent here).

Exactly, ski running also could be used as tool for advanced training,it is shifting to the side you are stepping, this the first thing they are teaching you in old Chinese martial arts, they are calling it the error of double weight, mastering this is very effective in boxing, but also in wrestling, when you must be able to shifting it very fast and efficient, also to not telegraph what you are doing , you counter with shifting the mass on the right leg in the right time , you are using double weight only to transition and to hide your intentions and tactics, but as soon as someone attack you are shifting the mass on one leg only which makes the opponent to search for better position, to know what is your weakness and what the opponent will do is your advantage if you are using it with intention to put him in situation in which you are predicting the response he gives you, this is the best way to get defense working as attack.
