Hey RF. I shot one quartering to. 700 grains total weight kinetic kaos, cutthroat 200 up front with weighted insert. Went through shoulder blade and busted it, cut a rib in two, lung, sliced a nice gusher between the lungs, liver, through back rib opposite side. Didn't live 10 seconds. Thank you for the videos!!

Just a note to say thanks. I added 150 grains of weight to my carbon arrows this season. I've had way to many deer look like they got hit with a twig when my arrows were making contact. This year with added weight arrow was 550 grains. Hard quartering shot arrow had a long way to go. Went in just back of left shoulder and exited with approximately 14 inches of arrow passing through. I believe the added weight was the key. Deer dropped in 25 yards. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge.

Shooting too low and back from a stand has been a weakness of mine for some time. In most cases, the shot placement when you do find the deer is so different than where you thought you hit. Glad to see I'm not the only one who struggles with this.

Took 1 buck and 3 hogs last yr and it all about shot placement. Hog 1, 2 and 3 dropped right where they stood .the buck went 25 yrds .hunt private property and bow season was canceled so rifle is was .this year bow season not allowed again so have to wait until November which sucks . I shot aluminums and fixed blades long after everyone went to carbon and mechanicals. Usually stayed away from leg bones but punched thru allot of shoulder blades. I would hear stories of arrows stopping on shoulder blades and wondered how. Then I swithed to twizzlers and flappers. All of the sudden my shot placement didnt work. Was condidering going back to aluminums and zwickeys when i found the ranch fairy. Now my 250 spine arrows weigh 650 grains with single bevels up front. This is the best setup out there. I hunt places I cant afford to track a deer very far so breaking a shoulder is a great way to slow them down. Love these videos. Keep it up.

Had my string slap my sleeve upon release. 623gr went through and through the liver and only the liver. 21 yards quartering too. He took one bound closer to 16 yards facing me, he stopped and flicked his tail, took one half step, another wobbly leg full step and front flipped into a lural quicker than I could fully un snap an arrow from the quiver that was still attached to the bow. It was over in 7 seconds. I was absolutely dumbfounded questioning how the arrow just hit where it did, and how the heck it killed so fast. Thank you Troy for being so adamant about having SHARP adult broadheads. Because when shit hits the fan like it did to me, it makes a difference. That single bevel tore him up.

Fixing to start bow season here-Louisiana- I kill a lot of pigs -public-ground -when i hunt deer-invariably they never come from the direction i am suspecting-hardly ever get the classic broadside shot-hardest shot for me are those within 10 yards -15-20 ft up-I try to aim just forward of the shoulder-qtr2-and qtr away just behind the crease-no bait-deer usually moving-lost one that i hit low qtr away-really enjoy the tutorials-they get me to focus on placement not just to hit the deer somewhere and pray

I have always shot with a rifle for center shoulder ball opposite side. I have not lost a deer with a rifle in well 10 plus years at least. I’m shooting a 608 grain crossbow bolt in a 425 rated crossbow. I worked up a 100 brass insert and 150 head and pile-driver 20. Weighed on a grain scale at 608. I shot a big doe in Illinois this past year quartering hard forward. Bolt slipped in just left of front left shoulder into brisket, traveled through the top and bottom of the heart center shot, exited back lungs opposite opposing side then went another 30 yards into the dirt. Blood was phenomenal. Deer went 30 yards, did a circle, sprayed everything around with blood like a pressure sprayer putting out fertilizer … then simply expired dead DRT. Blood trail a blind man could follow. Recovery was the easiest in my archery hunting career. I have a video of it but don’t know how to post In comments here. My point is your advice and insight for archers is invaluable! Thanks much. I had missed or wounded a bunch back in my vertical bow days more due to shot placement probably than anything else. I always tried to avoid the shoulder “ball” with archery equipment until I started honing into what you are telling us. Now, I do shoot a mechanical so you can hate or shake head back and fort. It’s a 150 Sevr Robusto. But anyway … work in progress. Thanks for the information always RF. Until I see a real reason to switch back to a fixed, I’m gonna stay with this set up. But I know I have BH options. We will see what the future tells me to do. Those Sevrs are just so field point accurate… Appreciate you bud.

Though I am new to the setup(currently running 720 grains), I managed to kill a buck here in MO opening day. I had shot quartering to. The arrow was a complete passthrough save for the back 4" that had broken off while traveling through the second shoulder. The single bevel cut through both scapulas. With all the things that can go wrong in hunting, having a setup that can crush a whitetail at literally any angle (save for the Texas heart shot, I'm still not cool with that one) is something that is invaluable.

Buying a cheap 3d deer target is a good way to learn arrow placement. One can shoot and then analysis their shot. I shoot a medium weight arrow and a 100 grain 2 bladed Magnus stinger. For deer, this works well. I can split the difference between weight and speed and have an arrow that gives me the best overall performance and success. I have a 30" draw so I have more lead way in my setup than most guys do. The average draw length is 28" so one needs to consider their draw length, poundage and bow's performance capabilities. Then find the right weight arrow and broadhead that gives them the best overall success for the game they pursue.

Shooting a 3D target will help, but practicing from a 🌳 into a 3D target is the Real McCoy. I have added another valuable little factor to the equation. I put the 3D target @ different angles with branches or brush strategically between me & the animal. I have shot small stuff halfway between myself & the 3D deer with arrow weights around 600 grains & ir has little affect on the impact. Of course just like Dr. Ashby says, " U must attain perfect arrow flight b4 anything else."

So funny you did this video now. I just had this exact thing happen last week to me too. Had a nice buck come in from my left quartering too me and I aimed just behind the shoulder but he stepped when I shot and I knew the shot was back. I'm shooting my 20% foc 150 gr honed grizzly heads and it zipped right thru and the deer ran about 40 yds and stopped behind a stone wall and I lost sight of him. Backed out quietly and went home and called my brother for tracking help expecting a long tracking job. We went back 5 hours later and he had literally bedded behind the wall 40 yards away! Shot had hit .near lung and liver exiting stomach on far side. I'm convinced that because the arrow went thru him so fast he didnt know what happened and just bedded down and died. Great advice aiming more forward. Next time its through the shoulder area for me! Thanks RF!

My flapper and twizzler failed me two years in a row I have 150 stinger buzzcuts got 350 spine arrow shafts going to my buddy Saturday and gonna start with arrow flight and go down the line I video my hunts if I get a deer with new arrow and head setup I'll send it. Just want to say thanks to you and especially Dr Ashbey. I'm a right handed shooter that needs a left shoulder replacement and I was worried I wouldn't be an affective killer with my bow. Now I know I can kill big deer with low poundage if I hit them perfectly every time. I know I can't do that its time for plan b arrow to blow through them like shit through a goose! Yeah this year I was on the ground 19 slightly quartering away hut him square in the ribs found arrow git 9 inches tip was broke off ill send everything once I get one down. That's a horrible feeling. Bummer. I've thought about advertising to help guys locally, track their deer, just because the more eyes on the ground, the better the chances of recovery. I found the carcass of a massive doe. The biggest one I've ever seen. The hit was low and back in the lungs and she laid down in tall, thick grass to be found by yotes. 😔 I've offered to help a lot of hunters track, but most of them turn my offer down. I just want to see hunters succeed.

This is good information for sure, my issue is that promoting this shot will result in a lot of lost animals. Not everyone has the luxury of having a team to grid search plus there are way too many people still thinking expendables are the best thing since sliced bread. More down side than up side IMO. Well I learned 2 weeks ago that I suffer from buck fever when the horns are on'em. Doe I have no issue but them horns get me jacked. Shot a 5 point and an 8 point quartering away. The 5 went 600 yards with a liver shot right at dark so we backed out til the next day. Took 4 hours to find him. Shot an 8 early morning quartering away thru liver and left lung. He went 50 and fell over. My dumb tale went to take a picture 20 minutes after he fell. He jumped up and ran on adrenaline in a big circle 60 yards as the crow flies but the blood trail was none existent. Took 2 hours of walking to find him 60 yards away from the last place we had blood. Talk about a roller coaster of emotion!!! But we found them

I keep hearing double lung is the best way to shoot compared to hitting the heart... as someone who's studied biology and taken all the classes, I have to say it's great to hear you talk about actual anatomy and placement and just how important it is to get a shot near the heart if not directly on it. My first deer with a bow was a quartering to shot, used my black hornet ser razor and hit 1 lung and the liver. The deer was dead in 14 minutes, watched it keel over and die myself as it only went about 60 yards. Full credit to the Broadhead

These are common shots on deer. Reality is as we as hunters set up for quartering to shots. We set up down wind facing direction deer are expected to come from. Majority of time on mature animals of any kind we are stacking odds in their favor to get that visual and set for that window we plan in our head. If our target animal is before that window we have set for, we feel good about what is happening. As deer passes our window... he is getting away. Lol. So without thinking about it alot of us set ourselves up for quartering to. Yet many concentrate on the speed of their bow with little concern of what they are shooting from their bow.

Troy do you remember a book from a fellow texan named the bowhunting alternative circa 1985 I think his name is Adrian behnke and he did a lot of study on succinclycholinechloride and broadheads

I was the Legislative Chairman for the LSBA when Behnke published his book. He was trying to convince the TPWD to legalize use of the POD with succinylcholine for archery hunting. I spoke with Behnke and reviewed literature he cited. His POD was behind the broadhead. His claims attributing kills to use of the POD/SUX were wrong. The kills were d/t proper broadhead placement adversely affecting physiology. He argued the POD filled with crystalline SUX behind a BH could be dissolved, absorbed, and circulated to the appropriate target organ resulting in death...faster than the known circulatory time of the deer! Obviously impossible and when I pointed it out to him, he said his opinion was there was another previously unknown and un described organ system in the WT deer that SUX worked through. BS! The known circulatory time of the WT deer is 27 seconds. The blood pressure in mammalian species consistently drops and immobilizes the animal when 1/3 of the blood volume is lost...9 seconds... and irreversible cardiogenic shock sets in at 40% loss of blood volume. As an emergency physician who uses SUX, I knew intravenously given SUX has an onset of action of roughly 50 -60 seconds. I knew Behnke was wrong and potentially putting hunters lives at risk. I enlisted Dr. Dave Samuel (PhD wildlife biologist)and Dr. Edward Otten (MD Toxicologist) to provide support letters to my letter to TPWD objections to the use of the POD/SUX in bowhunting. TPWD accepted my letter on behalf of the LSBA.

Mr.Klena...You are totally welcome! I commented on the subject in Part 2 as well. It’s a great topic. The funny thing is in the ‘old days’ most folks shot “adult arrows” by default because the common arrows were 2117, 2016 et al reasonably heavy arrows and most folks shot BHs anywhere from 125-145gr. Feathers were common than vanes so FOC was a bit more ‘natural’. Now it seems one has to take a course in how to build an arrow!

I have seen shots, whether accidental, or on purpose, where the arrow hit quartering to, in FRONT of the shoulder, and the deer fell within sight. In some instances, the arrow must have cut nerves/vessels that fed the front legs, and the shot turned the deer into a bulldozer, pushing his chest along the ground with his back legs basically going nowhere. Guessing a low percentage success shot because so much bone in the way. Maybe they just got lucky.

I have a 33" draw and just picked up the new mathews atlas. Draw weight is 75lb. Am shooting a axis 260. Can you recommend a arrow that will be correct spine for my draw and weight? Am finding it super difficult to find arrows that are right for my long draw and heavy weight

Looking for help! I shoot a Mathews halon pulling 60 pounds (could crank up if needed) my arrows need to be 28 inches carbon to carbon.... I know they sell test kits but if you were going to pick would you pick the 250 spine Apollo or 300 spine Apollo with my setup? Love your videos. Thanks in advance

I have a question I have a bunch of 350 spine arrows cut to 27 inches, and shoot 65 pounds at 28.5 inch draw. I am considering replacing the stock inserts with 50 grain but am worried that will under spine the arrows in combination with my 125 grain points so would have 175 up front with about 14% FOC, I hunt midwest whitetail only and happened to plan B a deer this season with a 452 grain arrow with cut on contact through the center of the scapula and cut the bottom of the spine, so that deer made 50 years. Would like a little more weight but would like to use what arrows I have purchased for now.

What target is recommended for broadhead practice with Single Bevels on an Adult arrow? Can we get a tutorial video on this? I'm curious if this is why Single Bevel broadheads receive such polarizing acceptance, or outright unwillingness to try...

So, I have a question, I have shot GT Hunter XT 340 with 100g Grim Reaper broadheads for 2 years and only lost 2 deer that I panicked and gut shot because they were monsters and buck fever got me (what an ass, huh?). I just had some GT Hunter Pro 300's with 50g added to the front built and am at 488g with a 100g broadhead. Having never had an issue with loosing deer (when I shoot like a man and not a newbie thats never seen a monster buck), should I still change broadheads and add more weight? (New to your channel, so learning a lot real fast)

I can’t fix the shot placement. But maybe your arrow flight is part of the problem? If you’re over 60# - we need to chat about perfect arrow flight. Believe it or not mechs don’t fly perfect and are not the saving grace of arrow flight. Under stress - “ok” arrow flight is not “ok” [e-mail].

@@RanchFairy I 100% believe what you are saying, the mechanicals leave a ridiculous wound channel (which has dropped 50+ deer within 100 yards) but I have had some questionable placements when I know where I was aiming. I am shooting a Revolt currently at 67# and love my bow, 275fps with the 488g arrows, but I have 4# of growth left with it and a lot to learn from your channel. The 200g broadheads seems a bit much to me, but I will take all of the advice I can get. Thank you for your time!

@@RanchFairy I am curious about something, at the point of getting around 600g per arrow, does the speed of the arrow not matter (or come into play, should I say)? I have dropped from 305 to 275fps going from a 401g arrow to a 488g arrow, shooting 67# and I can now see the arc of my arrow at 50 yards, is this just not a factor? Sorry if I am being a pain, just absorbing knowledge here.

Have you had a chance to try the OzCut Hurricane head? Single bevel 3 blade that looks nasty.. bought some 150gr heads to try them out before the season goes out...

No and won’t. It’s a 3 blade head. When they show some broken IMPACT heavy bones - we can think about it I bet it is awesome in soft tissue!!

@@RanchFairy, if you don't it won't get done (or done in a reliable, real life application w/o sponsorship bias). Did I miss a post about why 3 blade heads don't fit the Ashby model?

@@c3mac55 Because in the study - three blades were worst in bone, but better than 4 blade in soft tissue hits. But single bevel was #1 in both hits and double bevel #2 in both hits. Www.Ashbybowhunting.org

Drinking the kool-aid now. 3 deer now with 2 blade broadheads and feathers, always wait for a mostly broadside shot but recently had a slight quartering toward shot. All 3 around 15m or so, all 3 passthroughs. Not great blood trails, but deer didn't ever run more than 20m.
