Hunt Groundhogs in summer with your bow. Set up tree stands on runs or by holes & use your broadhead’s. This helped me. Good way to get permission to deer hunt too.

Hi Mr Ranch Fairy man, here in the UK it is illegal to hunt with bow and arrow but if you go back several centuries before gun powder was invented and archers used bow and arrows to kill men and horses in warfare. Look at the specs of their arrows, now they didn’t have the fancy tech to add inserts in the arrow. A typical wooden arrow had heavy broad head or heavy bodkin point and to increase the FOC weight the diameter of the arrow was about half an inch at the pointy end for a few few inches then tapered down towards the fletching. So young man you have it right on there. Cheers from the UK.

All us old guys have done this for years and just assumed it was common knowledge. When in a tree I do all my ranging before an animal is near. That way I don't have to figure it out when I need to keep movement to a minimum.

I use a range finder to 1) sight in my pins, 2) see how far off my range estimation is during practice, 3) pass the time when it gets boring, 4) see how far I’m going to have to move to maybe set up for a shot, 5) and less and less these days to help me screw up a shot opportunity by fiddling with the damn thing.

I agree 100% with you when it comes to people becoming to confident with their ability to take long shots when hunting because they practice at long distances when shooting 3d, once the animal is beyond 70 yards you're got no idea where the arrow is going to hit because you can not predict how the animal is going to react and at those distances any animal can move quick enough to make perfect shot a complete miss or worse a gut shot.

The "bow flip" is a real thing. I saw some Olympic archers from South Korea do it. Years later, I watched a famous bow hunter do it while practicing with his bow in the back yard. I am absolutely certain that he doesn't do that in the treestand, as he never did it on his hunting videos - definitely a "poser" thing.

I got a lot of weird looks at the club as it's August and I'm shooting with gloves, mask on, climbing up and down elevation, shooting at angles, ranging then walking away or towards my target then shooting. When I was 14 or so (I'm 55 now), I'd shoot my four arrows, go pull them and as I walked away from the target, I'd throw them like a javelin. Wherever they stuck in the ground, that's where I shot from. I was ALWAYS shooting distances other than 15, 20, 25, 30, etc., etc. About five years ago I switched to the struggle stick. So now, shooting my recurves and longbow, and I think this "lifelong habit" has helped me with the stickbow.

Thanks from a new bow shooter in Australia. In the process of building my heavy, high foc arrows. Currently practicing with lighter arrows for rabbits, because I figure a miss on the kill zone of a pig or goat etc will be similar to a miss on rabbit. My cheap PSE 5 pin sight I am looking at setting up for 42 metres (46 yards) max because beyond that I am unreliable, , and this will allow, 42, 35, 30, 25, and 20m sight pins, and below 20m is a short walk to the target, so practicing hold won't be a burden , lol. I have been wondering if a visit to the local archery park would be worth a look, as they have bags with killzones painted inside painted on Lifesize targets, from rabbits to kangaroos, and deer, at varying angles of elevation, and range, and even between branches. This video confirms that I am thinking along the right paths. Cheers again mate. Love your work.

The way you said to practice is what I do. I get my pins set, confirm those, then move to all different in-betweens, angles, off to the side, kneeling, leaning around a tree, etc.

100% agree with what you are saying, always better to practice like that cause you never know what the animal will do. As for me i am a public land hunter in thick narly bush and where i hunt, my max shooting distance is 40 yards. I range every little land mark from 20 yards and out, this way keep the guessing game to a minimum. Keep up the good work love these videos.

...."...in-between the 2 pins is halfway..." ....says the man who understands the physics ... realty is that this statement is malarkey. If you shoot only 15 to 25 meters it doesn't matter, but if you shoot 45 meters you better not use the middle between the 40 and 50 meter pin when you aim for the vitals as your shot would be very likely too long, especially with a very heavy arrow. BTW: ...that's something you learn pretty fast when practicing 3D!

I just purchased an EZ V bow site just for these situations. I love it. Most important thing is to practive shooting at targets that are as close to live size as possible. Framing an elk is very much different than a whitetailed deer. I made an elk target out of 4x8 foam board for less than $20. I just printed out multiple 6"X12" parts of an elk print and put them together like a puzzle. I set up a block target behind the vitals area to prevent the arrow passing through. I works great.

I use a few walkthrough ranges so I don't have the distances memorized. I always take my first shot guessing the range and if I'm off then I'll lazer and take another shot. By hunting season I'm pretty damn good at guessing the ranges.

Don't forget to shoot in different positions. Kneeling one knee down, two knees down, sitting on a bucket, crouched, behind a tree etc. However you're gonna hunt. Especially if you are spot and stalking. Strangely the park rangers do a terrible job of keeping all the terrain level and the rocks raked up. Just can't get good help these days, I'll tell you what. So, you just don't always get the opportunity to set up a perfect stance. It is almost like you have to have some instinctive shooting ability. Practicing with a recurve has helped me develop this skill somewhat (still have work to do) that I apply when shooting my compound. In my humble opinion (of which I have many) I think every bowhunter should learn trad shooting on a basic stick and string. You learn to respect the arrow and that it is really where the bulk of tuning is done. Along with that it is training your brain to unconsciously judge the distance in the same way it does when chucking a ball. This is why I like your take on compound shooting, your recurve shooting experience really shines through and you treat your wheel monster more like a stick and string. Bravo.

Oh shit is that why I keep getting my ass handed to me at the 3d course. I haven't told them how fast my new long bow is. But I made my own arrows, I cut the shafts from old fir bar boards, I triple layered my paint they look so awesome ,,, but I've never bragged about how fast it is... I'm new to trad archery (1.5 years) and bow hunting, this will be my first year, and I appreciate this advice on practicing. I work on my shot cycle at the range but it's too static. One of the best practice sessions I did was to put a target on a steep hill with a cross wind and I just circled around it at 20 yards with heavy blunts and shot at it from all angles. That was humbling but so useful.

I'm an old guy like the first commenter and had no range finder yrs ago so I would step off all the possible shot ranges in my stand area and then make a mental note of an unusual bent tree, broken bush etc at that range. Shot an early PSE compound single pin and a recuve instinctive but practiced a lot at unknown distances.

This is the best video I have seen you put out yet. I do this myself but so many people do exactly what you are saying. I shoot a single pin to get away from the clutter. I find middle ground which is usually around 30 to 35 yards. Then I jump around the range aiming high or low at different yardages. This usually teaches me where I need to hold without reranging or readjusting my sight. Great job Troy

I hunt state land and yes you can range some spots but the are wild animals. I think the point is supposed to be not so much a few steps but the fact that a heavy arrow simply drops faster .it's even said that heavy arrows hold there speed longer so there for once they start to go down they will drop more and faster ...now I'm not not either side of it here I shoot in the middle of the range..with that said if you hunting a corn pile and everything is 20 and under don't matter what you shoot and a few yards won't make a difference..but you get out to 30 40 and 50 and it will ..like throwing a a peace of paper and rock off a house the rock might hurt worse but it will hit the ground first ..it's gravity!!

I never got into a range finders. I just kind of estimate it and wing it from there. It will work except when it doesn't. Besides, like you stated, the animal never stays put anyway. Estimating 25 and in really isn't that big a deal

Love your pointers and sarcasm. Your vid’s make my day every time they pop in. When I go to the 3D range with my friend, we always take our first shot from a unknown distance without ranging it. Then we tell one another what we thought the distance was, then range it to see who was closer to being correct. Typically then we will take a second shot at the target with the known distance. It makes for a fun game and competition. We also try to shoot for the kill shot, not the point circles.

So as a self filmer and long time bowhunter of 50 yrs I needed to find a way to be able to range anee mulls while they were moving as well as keep them in frame of the camera and worrying about how much my 650gr arraha's were gonna drop say between 30 and 37 yds. Here's the shot process with a laser ranger finder. Power up camera and power up mic after spotting anee mull. Get critter in frame at proper zoom level on cam. Pick up lazer rangefinder and range critter..... clip on...... Draw bow....Uh oh anee mull just moved. Let down... unclip release...recenter anee mull in camera frame.... re range....reclip....re draw....lot to do to pull it off without getting busted....Now same scenario with the Garmin A1i ranging bowsite.... Spot anee mull... turn on cam and mic. ....center anee mull in frame and zoom. Pick up bow and clip on and draw.....Press lazer range button on bow....Anee mull is ranged to within a half yd....... Pin automatically moves in housing....... Shoot ..... look at camera and jump off saddle platform with glee at your perfectly ranged kill....... Hero interview while swinging in the saddle. Tried for 6 months to get the EZV to work for me. shooting the 650 gr. Arrah's. Just could no get the accuracy I was looking for with it. ....With the Garmin no problem bullseyes 1yd to 60yds. Heading to Fl. the end of march for a 2wk hog hunting excursion on a pals land!!!!!

Been doing it for years. I pull the arrows out of the target, turn around, and play lawn darts. I never use a range finder, just split and shoot. You get better the more you practice. Try taking a knee, or knee and tilt. All compound bow, I think we get sidetracked on traditional vs. Compound

Gotta love it!!!!! No holding back YEE Haw! People need to know their arrow drop. Multiple pins or one. I use a horizontal line to determine things like this because the line gives you way better feedback than an animal target. One needs to know how to use the pin to hit where it needs to be. Don't gap shoot between the pins. You should be able to raise the bow holding the pin above where you want the arrow to hit. If you know your drop factor say between 40 and 30 is 7" and the deer moved away 4-5-6? Yards and the deer was at 30-31 yards is now 35 or 36 yards. Do not gap the pins if you have any chance of the deer holding position for three to five seconds. Raise the bow so the 30 yard pin is 3 to 4" above the spot you want the arrow to hit. Yes, this is gapping but when you use the pin it's way more accurate. It's like " holding off" target which some do because of target panic if they try to hold dead center. But it's not target panic here. It's a more accurate way of using the pins.

I split pin shoot a lot cause not every animal is gonna be 20,30,40 yards , just walk at random spots in the yard and sling arrows in doing so you can see at odd yardages just how much your arrow drops makes you a better shot for hunting situations

We don't allow laser rainsfinders In our tournament unless it's specifically specified for that. You have to learn how to guess yardage to be good at 3-D and hunting. The average archer won't take the time to practice at guessing yardage, thus they stay average. I don't own a range finder. Shoot adult arrows😁

Troy, you’re smart enough to know you’ve oversimplified the fast vs heavy arrow debate… No one is making this argument that you can INTENTIONALLY hold the incorrect distance with a fast arrow and still hit, nor is anyone attempting that in the field. Every archer in the world, regardless of their arrow, is attempting to accurately estimate the actual range of target and hold appropriately. The undeniable benefit of a fast setup is that you have more margin for error in your range estimation. If I’m off 3 yards shooting a 400 grain twizzler at 40 yards, odds are I’ll still be on target. If I misjudge that same shot with a 750 grain adult arrow, it’s a guaranteed clean miss. There is always a trade off and it’s a FACT that fast arrows have a better trajectory which means they will miss less often (because we are humans and we make mistakes!). I also hunt with heavier than “standard” arrows, but we shouldn’t pretend they are superior in every way and try to poopoo on everyone who disagrees

The bull i shot was at 60 yards and that arrow was so slow I literally watched it leave the bow and its entire flight. It dropped right in, I can tell you it was beautiful and the very best filling of all last year. I shot a little low because I was guessing the yardage based on a bush between him and I. He dropped and the arrow ended up right where i wanted it. My arrows are 782 grains because it flew better than 470, 534, 606, 620, 646, 684, 706, 736, 760, 782, and 810 grain arrows i shot the heck out of did. A single bevel 150 grain broad head. Then I add the weight to the insert, I thought it would straighten the shaft, also I used to do that so i can shoot or use other broad heads if I wanted or needed to. That bull did not react to my bow at release, he reacted when that arrow until it was less than 20 yards away my guess is 10 yards he dropped about 10" and a little rotation. I do not believe it is the sound of the bow that scares our cory. it is the sound of the arrow and broad head in flight. Please record the sound of one of the arrows that you shoot with some good quality audio and video recording devise. I have had the un pleasurable experience of a arrow in flying over head. It sounded like a pissed off swam of hornets coming at you. For me it was over my head before I registered what those two noises where. The recoil noise of a bow drew my attention to that direction then the swarm flying over head. Then came the second arrow, at that time I was highly in tune to what I was seeing and hearing. The next two I had the pleasurer of hearing I was behind a tree but still heard them. I am pretty sure it is at 10-15 yards before the brain is clicking enough to get motion started.

I shoot a slider which I got once I started shooting heavier arrows which I did for my moose hunt. I went out and practiced for hours at unknown ranges and then would practice gap pin shooting between the the two pins knowing that I would have such a dynamic shot when moose hunting. Sliders in my opinion can be harder to gap shoot with 2 pins because if you get grabby and try putting that top pin at 34 yards so your bottom now is 40 and suddenly you have a shot at 16 yards.... boy you better have practiced and remembered you had your grubby fingers on that sight and don't get all wound tight over that bull just to watch that arrow go sailing into the blue yonder.

Love your humor and practical application. I'm still wondering why I didn't think of your logical analogy earlier about finding the right arrow spine/weight for your bow instead of "bending the barrel". As a former reloader/wing shooter/long shot that made a ton of sense and so does this vid. I could go into great detail about bullet weight/loads/drop from years of experiments that teach you about vectors and basic gravitational forces, but alas I digress. Keep up the great "informative" entertainment, I look forward to your vids with anticipation, never disappointed. One thing people don’t know - but I will be doing videos A Bullet CP is at or ahead of CG - arrows are LONG sticks that bend and roll and have wings (broadhead too) on both ends. The further back you can get CP the more stable the stick flies. Bullets are short so the rifling rolls them at tremendous spin rates. Off we go

Hey man I just ordered a set of kinetic platinums 300 spine shooting 65 to 70 pounds at twenty eight inches arrow length build with stock insert without doing any weight or head is sitting at 296 running 2.7 tac driver 4 vane right helical I'm considering switching to the single bevel cutthroat head and adding weights on the insert. Two questions for ya is the small diameter shaft going to be able to handle a 175 broad head with like 60 added onto my insert and with that is my foc going to be to excessive trying to get an elk down this year shooting a bowtech carbon icon I did 130 miles in ten days only seen two no opportunities last year and I'd hate for my stick I throw not handle it

Or shoulda asked me before you asked me!! I think they are gonna bare shaft with field points And I think broadheads over 150 grains are gonna “fly weird”

Its my first time doing a build and so far feels like I've come pretty close at least I messaged the seller already hopefully caught it before they cut the shafts put the order in late Friday so hopefully keep the content coming

I do something similar by setting my target in my my sons wagon, with a few pulleys and some parachord (with my wife or buddy pulling at unknown speeds) to simulate a moving animal and it works for me no doubt. Plus it’s a ton of fun

Up hill shots hit low??? Thinking that is a common mistake people make with rifles. I cant say I know for archery, but it seems a bit odd to me. I agree shooting straight down out of a tree when you are 20 feet up will cause a low shot but I think that is more of a function of how close you are. If you shoot straight down 20 yards with your 20 yard pin you should hit high.

some archers not aware of the physics may use line of sight as the decisive distance and therefore will shoot TOO HIGH (that's the case for down hill and up hill!). Using the horizontal line to the target as the decisive distance is usually precise enough for hunting scenarios, although it is not 100% correct from a physical point of view. (Using the horizontal distance for an up-hill shot will indeed hit low, however the error margin is minimal and neglectable for hunting.) Newer range finders are available with angle compensation that calculate the horizontal distance, however, be aware that angle compensation for golf differs from angle compensation for shooting hence you can't use a range finder for golf for hunting (well, of course you can, it's a free country, but the shot will be too long).

One of the most common errors in shooting up hill or down hill is dropping or raising your bow arm only and not bending at the waist. Just moving your bow arm up and down changes your draw length sometimes, the angle from your eye to your sight pin, etc, etc. Had a friend that set his pins while standing on level ground but would shoot at deer while sitting down in a tree stand and he couldn't figure out why he shot over every deer.
