This band! The alignment is incredible -- ranks, files & diagonals (!). The sound is beautiful. (Baritone horns -- RESPECT!) Gorgeous brass. Beautiful woodwinds. Everything so balanced. Great Drum Major salute at the beginning. The first flag tosses elicit a "wow" in the crowd and with reason. Just a wonderful performance. Congratulations.

I add my two thumbs up for this performance solely because of one man...Tom Cole. During his tenures at Mt. Carmel and Rancho Bernardo, his parade bands were an absolute force to be reckoned with. It was like “a concert on the street” with near perfect balance, ranks, files, and diagonals. And while both groups would win overall sweepstakes occasionally, they ran away with the music sweepstakes trophy EVERY FREAKING TIME! Again, all because of Tom Cole, a premier SoCal music educator (now retired).

I miss RB on the street. No disrespect to the decision makers but that's like folding the LA Phil.

This march is absolutely one of the most regal sounding marches ever. Such a powerful, thunderous march: it is my favorite!!!! Its awesome to see RBHS play it so amazingly!!
@Largo649 жыл бұрын
This is one of the best high school bands I've seen or heard. The marching is first class, and the intonation perfect. Bravo! The Purple Carnival is difficult enough sitting in an auditorium, but marching with it and playing so well is really something. I played this with the Tournament of Roses Band (B flat Baritone Horn) more than fifty years ago. It's still one of my favorite marches.

Who did you perform with at Tournament of Roses?

Means a lot, Larry. Back when I marched RBHS parade ('01,'02,'03), it was taken very seriously by all and Tom Cole was an absolutely amazing director that took great pride and challenge in parade music. I loved marching it just as much as I did later in drum corps (Vanguard & Blue Devils)

I literally was jumping out of my seat every few seconds because I was so amazed. The banner girls were terrific, whoever choreographed their moves deserves an award, They use half time, double time, the cross over grape vine, all in perfect coordination with the music. The flags were so precise youd think they were lookin to chop someones head off. The band balanced some difficult contrasts in music composition. The tone of all sections but especially the clarinets is just top notch. Sweepstakes for sure!!! Like the best Ive ever seen really!!!!

Music Director retired in 2011 and my understanding is they no longer do street competitions and are a field show band only. The auxiliary advisor is now at Diamond Bar High School. As for the march, it's the best rendition of the Purple Carnival I have ever heard on the street. Kaiser HS (Fontana) did a great job with it in 2015 as well as Mt. Carmel HS (San Diego) in 2006 and Arcadia HS in 2007.

They converted to year round schedule so it affected their schedules for preparing for street competition. The Royal Regiment is truly missed on the streets. The only group left from the Poway Unified School District is Mt. Carmel. I pray that they continue the tradition....

RB at its best. Mt. Carmel did a great Purple Carnival a year or two before this (best I'd heard since 1977), but RB took it up another notch. This was worthy of Sweeps--not sure what happened there.

Check out Loara’s 1969 Purple Carnival. The sound will blow you away. Marching was amazing also. (It was actually from the Fall of 1968 at All Western)

@@maggiekelly4055 I've heard it from the old All-Western LP. Colton also played it that year I think? Amazing in a very different brassy way.

Yeah, I got to sightread this monster gut-buster march exactly one time in early 1969 and I was at the first tuba desk in the high school band. I think that was the thing that put me over the top in my silly 17-year old's mind that I wanted to be a band director. It took a very long time to get to that place (51 months active duty in the Navy, three and a half years of college), and in 1978 I got to be a band teacher. Three years later I realized I had thought somewhat wrongly in that, and left that school. The next year my band earned a perfect Superior grade at the Alabama concert band competition, and a couple of months later earned a solid "III" grade at the Six Flags over Georgia competition in Atlanta. Yeah, okay, I guess. That band had earned "Best in Class" for middle schools for two years consecutively, but somehow they couldn't earn anything better than that all "III" rating. Fine, at least we got everyone home safely and had a pretty good time at Six Flags over Georgia to boot. But I never got to put "Purple Carnival" in front of a group of musicians, in the Youth Orchestra I conducted, or in the University of Alabama-Huntsville Wind Ensemble in which I was privileged to play until I was no longer privileged to do so as a strict volunteer; by that time I had become a member of the selection committee to choose the replacement for the outgoing conductor/director, and what I had to say about the one eventually chosen just didn't have any impact on the remainder of the committee. (The guy they chose in the end said that we volunteers could no longer rehearse or perform unless we enrolled as students and paid the required fees. They in fact lost an awful lot of talent-whether me or others-on that deal.) Odd. Last night the MeTV network showed the final episode of the execrable M*A*S*H television show, the title of which was something like "Farewell, Goodbye, and Amen". I'd guess that's just the way an awful lot of things work out. Blessings.

Well, not withstanding "MrLoveToCrankUp (sic) about "...almost dynamic contrast" (with which I happen to disagree), I happen to feel the RBHS is one of the consistently-GREAT southern CA high school marching bands. Hovering just under 100 every year, they're as good a "medium-sized" band as you'll find anywhere, I feel, and they take me back to the late 60's when I was at Glendora High, where we made something of a mark among high school bands like Arcadia, Loara, Pasadena, and all. Go, RBHS!
