Been thinking about trying to snag one of these myself. If you put a 6 band graphic EQ in the FX loop, you can get some really good tones out of the amp without the need of a boost in front. With the 6 band in the loop, the controls on the amp begin to operate like the controls on a boost pedal (think the Mesa Boogie Mark series of amps as an example as to how it would work). A lot of people will turn the mids and the bass on the amp to 0, turn the treble up all the way to 10, and then use the 6 band EQ in the FX loop for all of their general EQ adjustments. What's even better is that if you still wanted to use a boost with this setup, you absolutely could and it would definitely help give the amp more juice if you felt that you ever needed it. What i've been curious about myself is how the contour knob would come into play in this setup. I would guess you could try to turn the contour up all the way with an EQ in the loop for all of your general EQ adjustments as i said earlier, and then have your guitar going straight into the amp. If you ever get your bass and contour controls fixed in the near future, it's definitely something worth checking out.

Dude, thank you for this. I've been having trouble with getting a good tone out of mine for some time. And I tried turning down both the mids and bass, and I got a really good tone for what I have. So thank you

Wow...I didn't know that patching an EQ in the loop, puts the tone stack before the gain stages? Would make sense, so I'll definitely try it out with my Boss GE7 and put my SD1 in front for leads :) So that was the easter egg in this amp. I think I got the one with digital delay and reverb, and feed my into my Peavey 412M with stock Cel V30 from 1990

That's a great find! The price of these things (or at least, the older Randall's from the 90s) have been going up, from what I understand, because of people wanting that authentic Dimebag sound.

I felt like I had to come back to this video to give another important tip whenever it comes to playing through solid state amps; If you’re looking to boost this amp to get into more modern territory but you feel as if boosting the amp kills the dynamics in your playing, you should definitely try to boost it with a pure clean midrange boost. Your Electric Eye Audio Mud Killer with the switch to turn off all the gain coming from the pedal is a perfect example of this. A part of the reason as to why you see people boosting tube amplifiers with pedals like tube screamers is because tube screamers add a solid state gain stage to your signal chain, meaning that the notes you play are going to not only sound tighter, but they also make every note you play sound more consistent, as well as adding more treble bite to your tone. With a lot of solid state amplifiers, the circuitry behaves in what I would assume to be kind of the same manor as a tube screamer, as with amps such as this the tone still sounds very tight even with the gain turned up. However, as I’ve discovered while using my Randall RG80 combo, it’s very easy to wind up using too much gain on accident. One way to counteract this is by using a clean midrange boost like your Mud Killer, a TC Electronics Spark Booster, Walrus Audio Warhorn, Peppers Pedals Dirty Tree, and others you may stumble across. Not only does it get you that tight, focused tone you hear on a lot of today’s Metal music, but it also allows you to use the gain on your amplifier as your primary source of gain, on top of retaining all of the dynamic character of your amp.

Came here to see if you talked a little more about the impedance but was pleasantly surprised with your demo. And you also happened to have a mug killer which I also use with this amp! If you don't like the reverb, what I did was pulled out the board from the back and disconnected the springs on the inside. You also want to disconnect the cables that are hooked up to the reverb springs so that they don't cause interference at high gain settings (which has been a common problem with this amp). Great video!

Well for the impedance I ran the amp at 8 ohms, but I'm planning to do a video where I run a bunch of amps at different ohm ratings to test their output differences in comparison to wattage, so maybe I'll answer any questions you have when I make it. As for the reverb I think I'm gonna try that

Great vid. I bought mine 2 yrs ago from guitar center for $500 I can't believe the price jump to $900 now. It's a good amp and it does take pedals well. I use digitech 360 with mine and it does pretty good.

It's typical for Randall's to have low gain. What ya need is a parametric in the loop, or an mxr in the front. Either. But, looks like u successfully got it jammin'!

My son uses this head with a 412 loaded with Celestion Seventy 80’s and uses it when our band gigs. He loves it (not as much as his RH300 G3 Plus but that’s too heavy to drag to gigs).

These seem really cool, I'm just not sure how it would cut in a mix/live. I think it'd be great for some Crowbar style riffing though.

for years has ben my favorite piece of gear in my chain, but i use only the clean channel, and i love it huge sound, super clean for delays and heavy reverbs and for overdrive the clean channel is the best for my sound with mi pedal board (tuner-eq 7 for tone shapping and boost -od1x-ns2-musa fd90)

Its not digital reverb, its a spring one. Give it a shake or rattle, you can hear the springs ring and bounce. Or maybe ur is, mine is with outline logo, not the full white one.

I guess surely by now you know that the contour knob changes which frequency the mid control affects ;) I got mine as combo for a pawn shop “as is” because it wouldn’t come on.. think it was the…… switch? Fixed it.. don’t remember ;) either way.. your contour knob could be stuck at really high or really low mids.. carry on! Have fun :)
