I am a asphalt worker from Michigan, There is many problems with this work, 1. The but joint at the road is to narrow making the bump up over the curb to high. 2. no tack was applied to the old asphalt, with out the tack the new asphalt and old asphalt will move differently and the new surface will end up peeling up. 3. The mix used has to large aggregate in it judging by the video, it is probably a binder mix , not a surface mix 4. The mix appears to be cold meaning it wont bind together has well.

On observation, I have a few thoughts and concerns. 1) The original asphalt at the top end looked somewhat level with the garage floor. 2) These guys cut out/remove about three feet across the top and then fill in with new asphalt to the floor level. 3) They add what appears to be 2" to 4" of fresh asphalt to the entire driveway and thus raising the asphalt at the top peek to be higher than the garage floor. That would seem to cause a grade/slope towards the garage and thus with heavy rains could cause water to pool at the garage door or even leak into the garage. 4) I did not see the contractor heat up to prepare for the new asphalt to bind to and neither did I see them use a hot asphalt liquid binder. With those thoughts and observations, I would suspect that the new asphalt will begin cracking and breaking away within a relatively very short time.

so a few more thoughts . they did not put emulsion on any joints or the driveway itself considering its an overlay . they waited way too long to put the roller on , you need to pave it in a way that you can get the roller on fast so you can get proper compaction ( pull it in 2 passes , not 1 pass and do 18" by hand ) and 1 more thing is when they did roll I couldn't hear if he was running the vibes or not , with a roller that small you need to vide both ways during the breakdown process then roll it static during the back roll process. just a few observations from a 21 year vet and an owner of my own paving company ( not one like this either , I have 32 employees, 3 pavers , 2.5 crews and do over 13 mill per year in revenue )

After we sold our Hidden Hollows property, there hasn't been much going on worthy of of such an effort. That said, I am amazed by the number of views and comments on this video, and somewhat concerned over the quality of A-Pak's asphalt re-surfacing work. At the very least, I will post a follow-up video so you can see how well our new driveway is holding up...or not...that is if we are still here. Thank you for watching my videos, and Happy Holidays!

ween the 2 layers at the end. If it wasn't at least a few hours, you really didn't get 2 layers. It's going to cool together as one layer which is not what you want but it's fine for a private driveway. I would have liked to see them put some tack down on the part they didn't tare out so the new stuff sticks to it a little better. The size of the roller was fine for the job, I would have like to have heard his vibrators coming on for at least one pass all the way across for better compaction. 45 ^#

I've been a heavy equipment operator for 22 years and worked in asphalt for the last 7 of them. Kevin in the description is mostly on target. They did pretty nice job. It is nice to have 2 layers if you can, but you can get away with one in a small private driveway like yours. It is not going to see a lot of truck traffic, you aren't going to park a tank on it. It is fine. You can't tell how long they waited between the 2 layers at the end. If it wasn't at least a few hours, you really didn't get 2 layers. It's going to cool together as one layer which is not what you want but it's fine for a private driveway. I would have liked to see them put some tack down on the part they didn't tare out so the new stuff sticks to it a little better. I noticed they need to stay off for 5 days, I remember driving on freshly surfaced country roads growing up, are those made differently to allow immediate use?
@karmadump8 жыл бұрын
No. What they mean is don't park on it for 5 days. An asphalt roller works like a rolling pin. Spreading and stretching the asphalt into place. Driving your car on it has a similar but much lesser effect on it. You aren't helping much but as long as it has cooled and been compacted enough that you don't sink in it, you aren't hurting it. Parking is every different. You aren't smoothing and stretching, you are sitting in one spot smashing it. You can ruin that smooth surface and maybe leave indentations where your tires were

@jn26553 жыл бұрын
May I ask how long it takes for asphalt to dry, and how long after it has been laid it will continue to smell? And how far does the smell travel?
@mikehannahs3 жыл бұрын
As far as set up and drying it depends on what asphalt is being used, if it’s cold mix it can take a few good months of curing time to really get hard to where when a person turns their wheels on it the asphalt doesn’t get damaged, the cold mix to me doesn’t really smell after it has been rolled, hot mix on the other hand sets up good and hard pretty quick, by the next day it should be completely solid, even after it gets rolled down it’s solid, as far as smell goes with hot mix I notice a slight smell for a day or two but nothing at all like when it’s being laid out, for driveways especially where turning is common I’d use hot mix asphalt if it were me if you plan on doing something like that

The old asphalt was less than an inch thick near the garage door in particular and likely was sold as being four inches thick all over. A common way contractors cheat their customers.
@alexdubu92033 жыл бұрын
It was just the top layer they ripped up there , you could see the bottom layer still, so was most likely just a recap done from the old asphalt settling

Excellent work, great attention to detail, very good price. Thanks for sharing and giving the company a well done. Asphalt is a combination of 3 sizes small rocks with pitch, an unusable remnant of oil processing. All asphalt will shrink. You can apply a surface coating after a couple years to make it nice and black again and minimize shrinking and cracking. Asphalt that is removed is recycled into new asphalt, unlike concrete.

I cannot believe what I have watched , The Caravan Club turned up and done your driveway
@mrgmac7778 жыл бұрын
First off, the driveway wasn't in bad shape and could have easily been repaired to look like new and for much cheaper. Secondly, when putting new asphalt over old asphalt, you have to use tack coat for adhesion. Otherwise, the top layer can slip and cause cracking. Without tack coat, there is a good chance the new asphalt will fail and rather quickly. I know, at least where I am it is required on all driveway overlays and the same in most areas. Also, they should have used a plate compactor along the seam at the garage, where the roller can't get. A 90lb guy in fancy metal shoes isn't going to get the job done. That area will be a concern over time. There are a lot of other little things they did wrong and took shortcuts on. If I was the homeowner, I would be demanding to know why they didn't use tack coat and look for some kind of guarantee or refund, before the inevitable happens.

Good job and thanks for sharing. Is the drive still in good shape? the reason I ask is because like you they will be paving over some old asphalt and I was wondering how that holds up. My association is telling me we have to wait a full year before it can get sealed. Does that sound about right?
@elpimpi71354 жыл бұрын
That is correct atleast 1 year before the asphalt cures.Then you can start to seal it every 2 years with coal tar base sealer for best and longer result
