At age 92 and a half, like his slightly younger 87-year-old 1931 Model A Ford pickup, my Dad, By Wingett, is still trucking along strong! What an amazing, memorable ride this was with my father. And Shadow loved it too!

It is a beautiful pick up, but I wouldn't drive one daily around where I live. I have an older vehicle and it handles well for its age, but I was driving the other day an a Porsche Cayenne wouldn't stop stalking me. I couldn't outrun it, or outcorner, or brake it. It's not even close to as safe either. Every time I drive it I think, yeh I would love to drive this everyday, but I would probably come close to dying many times due to other people on the road.

In 1959 I learned how to drive in a 1931 Model A Ford pickup at Treadwell Boats and Motors, an on the water marina in Algonquin, IL I was 14. We used that old truck to move boats on trailers around the yard and on Saturday and Sunday mornings to empty the garbage cans from the picnic ground. I learned to shift it without grinding the gears and on more than one occasion, start it by pushing it and popping the clutch. It also was green.... My very first vehicle in high school was a 1930 Model A pickup! But it was a bit of a hybrid! Only thing Model A was the body and the frame side rails! It had 1940 Ford running gear and "X" frame, including 1940 steering column and wheel, 16 inch wire spoke wheels and hydraulic brakes. The engine was a'53 Flathead V-8 with a 4 speed transmission and dual exhausts. On the outside it looked stock 1930 Model A. The hydraulic brakes were a blessing because people often pulled out in front of me thinking it was a 45 MPH Model A coming down the road when in fact it was going 70! Had a lot of fun with it. Sold it my senior year to buy a bigger, heavier pickup to tow a horse trailer
