Nice!! When you get the chance, you should review the Oliver Peoples Clifton. The gold frame with the photochromic lenses are great, but the new silver frame with amber lenses are rather striking.

Are those white gold frames with the mineral glass lenses heavy on the nose? I had a pair of Randolphs with the AirForce pasltic lenses and these were incredibly light and comfortable.

Mineral glass lenses are a bit heavier on the nose, yes. I only notice on long driving trips or wearing them all day. For active lifestyles the lighter lenses are more suitable.

OK so iv been after a pair of the Travis Bickle taxi driver shades. I know that they are the American optical frames, but when I look at identification tools online they show AO as been randolph, are they essentially the same frame? 0if so which are superior and which will hold their quality and price point better

The white gold looks a little brighter than chrome. How they hold up over time remains to be seen, but I'd expect the chrome to be more durable.

No not on the newer ones that have there logos etched into the lens. But one the older pairs with a white logo that ones painted on and can be removed

@@mouadbehri446 The American Gray non-polarized is not near as dark as the polarized version. In the summer I find the Concorde (round aviator) style to be better against side glare and top glare than the classic Randolph square aviators, unless you're wearing a hat.

I kayak in mine and they never budge, keep in mind these are designed to military specs. They are designed to stay right where they need to, and do it well in all conditions. So much so, that after my first pair I felt all other glasses were obsolete in this sense.

Not for $359 lol the spot price of gold is $1,923 and there would have to be about 2 or 3 ounces in those frames if they were solid also 23K gold would be way to soft so it would bend so these are 23K gold plated

Yeah, I agree. That is the only weakness though. As someone who wore SPY, Tom Ford, Maui Jim, Oakley, Smith Optics, Persol, and Rayban among others I cannot rate any of those great brands in the same echelon as Randolph Engineering. They all have aspects where they are as good, or sometimes even better (Maui Jim lens tech imo is the best) but in terms of overall across the board best, it is Randolph by a mile. If not for my active lifestyle I would probably exclusively rock Randolph Aviators. The only time I don't prefer them is for sports or kayaking, where I prefer my Maui Jims. I'd say its Randolph Engineering and Maui Jim, then everybody else, but thats just my opinion. If you want a pair of Randolphs on the cheap, they have some aviators 100$ off tomorrow for Black Friday. I may cop a second pair of gray lens ones because that is the type the military pilots wear.

What the hell is difference between the shiny chrome and white gold? Seems like a gimmick. There is no difference between the two colors. 1973 - when Randolph stole American Optical's Original Pilot design (somehow they got away with that).

They were both contractors for the US armed forces. Also in fashion styles can not be copyrighted only brand logos.

But I believe the founder of RE actually worked for AO and then started his own company because he knew the frames could be improved and that’s what he set out to do. I’m not 100% sure if this is true just something I heard.

@@ShadeReview Thanks for the update. Was always curious about the two companies. Are you able to get a pair of the Randolph Engineering FGN frames and review them? I scored a pair of the 58mm in gold on ebay for $40 and in perfect condition as they are everywhere and had the Sunglass Fix make gradient black lenses for me. I'm on the fence about them. I like some things about them, that they are squared and I love the protruding brow bar and straight nose bridge. AO and RE could improve their aviator if they did this I think. They would complete your extensive collection as they are the only ones you haven't reviewed.
