I once programmed a Rogue-like game in college, back in the late '80's. It was like Rogue, but set in the Wild West. Your character had to explore a town and rescue a girl, while shooting (and being shot at) by bad guys. It was difficult as you had to make good use of cover to avoid being shot by multiple bad guys, who would always chase you as soon as they saw you, and shoot at you whenever you were in their line of sight.

One of the most influential games of all time, and for good reason! It's surprising how well it stands up even after all these decades and thousands of imitators. HP slowly restores over time. Food is related to the game's hunger mechanic, where you begin to feel hungry over time and eventually starve to death if you don't eat. I believe you actually downgraded your gear by switching to the scale mail and dagger, as I think the +1s to the mace and ring mail indicate more powerful equipment. Properties for potions and scrolls are unknown at first, requiring trial and error usage or using an identification scroll to determine what they do. Overall it was a good initial run that demonstrated many of the game's features, and the recommendation at the end is well deserved. Definitely a game worth checking out on its own merits as well as for its massive historical legacy.

How many rogues like a roguelike like if a roguelike liked liked rogues?

You may not like Rogue but I enjoyed watching your play of it a lot. I think I would like this game considering how much I enjoy dungeon crawlers like Wizardry. Your HP was regenerating as you moved around so what I would try doing is running around in a single room until my health came back. Not sure if that would work but I would give it a try.

And here we are, the game that started my journey in PC gaming... Maybe not this version, but even so! This runs on the 808x mini laptops, and in my opinion, essential for them! Roguelikes are my favourite genre, and I still have a great love for them!

The other ASCII roguelike I've played is MAG (Mike's Adventure Game), but yeah... Ice monsters can be pretty brutal because they freeze you!

I think if anyone can appreciate an ASCII game like "Rogue" today then it's because they've been gifted with an imagination and a brain that is able to "fill in the gaps" between what is shown on screen and how it would look in real life. That's the problem with modern ultra-realistic graphics in games - they kill imagination and ultimately destroy some of the immersion.
