You are supposed to lay on your back and spread your arms out. This is to keep your spine as straight as possible as well as to spread the impact across more of the body. It also helps to keep a lot of your own body weight from working against you. The back is mostly all muscle and provides a lot of protection.The best example I can give would be if you've ever watched pro wrestling like WWE. When they get hit and fall, they try to land flat on their backs with arms out . This of course is very dependent on the number of floors involved. Lying on your back to survive a falling elevator is the dumbest thing I've heard. (1) If the elevator is in free-fall, you won't be able to lie on your back because you will be weightless. You'll be lucky to get into the supine position. Then a split second after the elevator hits bottom, you will hit the floor of the elevator and be killed instantly. (2) If the elevator is experiencing some drag and is not in freefall, bend you knees slightly and try to absorb as much of the shock in your legs as possible.
