The Carmudgeon Show

Күн бұрын

Back by popular(-ish) demand, and because the Carmudgeons were at Monterey Car Week instead of podcasting live, we have another episode where Jason and Derek dig into their vast spreadsheets of automotive reviews.
The boys use Random Number Generator to call up cells in their spreadsheets of automotive nerdery, forcing Jason and Derek to take a trip down memory lane - and then read aloud their sometimes-embarrassing commentary on cars they've driven in the past.
Cars that they'd often forgotten about it.
In this episode, we hear about some of the following cars:
Alfa Romeo GTV6
Mercedes 300SL Roadster (W196)
2009 BMW E92 M3 Coupe DCT in a Hypermiling challenge
2023 BMW 760i xDrive
2001 Dodge Viper
2007 Mercedes CLK 550 Cabriolet
Lancia Fulvia HF
2009 Jetta TDI (Mk5)
2009 Honda CR-V Diesel Bosch Prototype
1991 BMW 318is convertible (E30)
1994 Porsche Speedster
2011 Audi A8
2015 Volkswagen Golf Mk7
Suzuki XL7
1961 Jaguar E-Type
2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S 7-speed Dogleg Manual
2024 Aston Martin Valour
1985 Ferrari Testarossa Monospecchio
BMW 850i (E31)
Bentley Continental W12
2008 Mercedes C300 Sport 6-speed
…and more!

Missed you guys. Can't wait for the C36 swap impressions on Derek's 124! Saw a Bornite Metallic 200E recently and it made me think about just how cool the color looked in the flesh. Also, random test drive impression from me: Up! GTi. Went to look at a red 3 door which I fell completely in love with....until I interacted with it and sat in it and drove it. Felt like nothing, had no room for anything, did not live up to the R53 I went to go look at before this. Total disillusionment. And that's coming from someone who *wants* a small hot hatch to replace my Mk5 Golf TSI. *Man* did it feel good to get back in ol' faithful and drive away from that bucket of disappointment. A joke for 15k.

I remember that hypermiling story!! Still one of the most entertaining things I’ve read in a car magazine. At some point the third row seats from the Yukon were put into the trunks of the other two cars to “even things out” lol.

Speaking of the 7 series, drove the previous generation last week. A 2016 750i x-drive. I loved the engine and transmission calibration, and it’s absolutely very fast. The interior was very nice as it was an individual spec. I didn’t like how weak the brakes felt. The part I didn’t like the most was the ride quality. Lots and lots of float in the suspension, but then it has the low profile run-flat tires and big wheels. The worst combination possible. You think it’s gonna be a really smooth ride and then you hit a minor pothole and you feel the bump in your spine. I miss the days of E39, E38, E34, E32, E65, and E60 where the suspension was tuned very well and the wheels weren’t oversized. Very comfortable and absorbed 99% of road imperfections but it didn’t make you nauseous when you went through a light corner or when you accelerated/decelerated.

My previous shitbox was an 320Ci E46 with the M54 engine and it was an absolute joy to drive because of that engine. The 4cyl petrol engines on the E46 were miserable, in Europe the entry level was a 1.9 SOHC with an output of 105 PS and the “best” one was a 2.0 with 140 PS plagued with valvetronic issues. The 2.0 diesel engines from BMW were always great in terms of power and numbers, better than their petrol 4 cyl ones, but from the E90 onwards they had horrible timing chain issues and they could not hold a candle to the 6cyl diesels anyway. Given the fact that the default choice of an engine in 00s - 10s Europe was a 2.0 diesel, the M54 was an absolute jewel amongst them: a regular car with cheap maintenance and great fuel economy that felt special in a sea of uninteresting motors. Sadly, rust does not forgive any E46.

I was I little surprised that the BMW M10 chat didn't go off on a tangent. DTS simply saying that they can be spiced up was a charming exercise in understatement. Those tiny motors ultimate end point was the late 80s Megatron: a 1400hp turbo lunatic that was almost certainly the most powerful F1 engine of its era and possibly of all time.

2001 is 2nd Gen Viper with updated interior (came in 99), cast pistons which means no 708 cam (2000), and abs (came in 2001). Gen 1 92-95 have more dodge dakota suspension than gen 2, have removable side windows, no exterior door handles, and a much more kit car like interior. These only 400hp, but are considered twitchier. Gen 1.5 is 96 rt/10 only. They have a gen 1 motor with a gen 2 ecu. They have a gen 2 suspension, but retained their side exhausts. The still used the gen 1 interior. Only year to get fang stripes. GTS Coupe came out in 96, but debuted as a full gen 2.

So we bought a 2015 200s v6 that was ceramic blue (a special blue/gray color). If I'm honest I absolutely loved that car......mostly. It was fast! It was very comfortable and the seats held you great. Great sound system and it drove and handled great. The bad though was sadly unbearable bad, the 9sp transmission. In less than 20k miles it ended up with a new transmission and that didn't fix the issue. We actually had a great dealership and head of service actually told us nothing they could do would fix it because it was a very poorly designed transmission and to just lemon law it. I will honestly say that if it wasn't for the transmission I would totally have kept that car for a long time and I still remember how much I did love driving it when the transmission wasn't causing problems.

Pls, if someone finds it, Discount Sandler or Paulo (who certainly was barking, wetting himself and making lots of other noises in the background as always), or anybody else, pls link it in here and also Paulo should pin that comment. I suspect that the 964 RS America would be my sweet spot when it comes to 911s. It has the coil-spring suspension, and reasonable power, but it’s still small and relatively light and analog.

Jason, you have a shop and a lift and the skills. You can do long term projects! Buy a regular v8 vantage and tear the drivetrain out, build it how you want over a year or two. A salvage v-12 and 7 speed manual might take a while to find but they aren’t new cars so the parts are out there

Those 2.2 diesel CR-Vs are all over Europe still going strong. The only things that fail are the dual mass flywheels - bombproof engines, especially the early iCTDi engines with no DPF. This was the peak of Honda in Europe, hence no automatic option. They spend millions developing this engine themselves, planning to manufacture it at HUM in the U.K. before, at massive expense, scrapping the engine plant and moving it to Japan… Only the common rail and injectors were Bosch, but knowing Honda with intellectual property, it was probably done mostly be themselves at much higher expense.

Derek, when you don't have the number that Paolo says, why don't you just "delete" the first number? It is highly unlikely that with a Random Number Generator that same termination will come up again haha PS; are you all "tracking" whether or not you have already talked about any of these cars? It would be funny to have you speak about one car multiple times in these episodes

After extolling the virtue of driving at wide open throttle for achieving the best MPG, you think that a Prius would get worse MPG at full throttle than an M3 cruising following it. Being the Prius is a more economical car to begin with, wouldn't doing full throttle make it "more efficient"?
