The Carmudgeon Show

The Carmudgeon Show

Күн бұрын

There's something wonderful about driving a vehicle that's the opposite of all the things you love. And for Jason, that's the Ford F-150 Raptor R.
=
This episode of the Carmudgeon show is sponsored by Lucid Motors, who has special lease and finance offers on available 2023 models of the Lucid Air Touring and Grand Touring. Visit lucidmotors.com for offer details.
=
Jason, lover of simple, lightweight, nimble sports cars, is enamored of the Raptor R - even more so than the Bronco Raptor. Why? Because it's unabashedly what a Raptor should be. And everything that Jason ostensibly hates in cars:
It's heavy, it's inefficient, it's loud, it's an automatic, it has forced induction, it doesn't go around corners or stop, and it's huge. But it's also perfect.
Jason's highway encounter with a Rolls-Royce Cullinan made for some of the biggest laughter he's ever experienced in a car, and this leads the boys to discuss cars they love that are out of sync with what they typically appreciate.

Thank you for reinforcing everything I love about the i3. It was meant to be a city car, but they actually built a quirky carbon fiber hot hatch. It stands out with cool design, drives like a tarmac rally car and you can find one super cheap these days. It’s the car auto enthusiasts don’t know they love yet. I’m currently shopping for a low miles i3s to compliment my e46 cabrio with mild mods. Love your show!

I used to live in Brooklyn and near my apartment lived a guy in a wheelchair with an i3. One night coming back from my studio, I saw him getting into his car. He would lever himself from the wheelchair into the car, and then the suicide doors and lack of b-pillar allowed him to fold up his chair and toss it into the back seat with no issue. That alone makes the i3 an amazing car in my eyes.

As a Durango Hellcat owner who previously only enjoyed pony cars (like my 3300lb LS6 powered Z28 T56) I will say that modern full size house vehicles are an absolute blast and are the equivalent to riding a jet ski. Try to have a bad time on a jet ski... it's not possible. (also of note...I have a durango hellcat all stock, if I can get it to you I would love to see it in a video).

My folks were just visiting from out of state, and the vehicle they chose for the trip turns out to be my guilty pleasure. It's a GMT 800 Z71 Suburban, mostly stock, just dual exhaust with Flowmasters and 3.73 gears in the rear end. I think the Z71 suspension is a fair bit stiffer than the typical family hauler versions, too. But the main reason I love it so much is that it ameliorates my less admirable driving tendencies instead of encouraging them. As much as I enjoy small, lightweight, sporty cars, commuting in them has become exhausting with the way other people drive. I no longer want to deal with that much anxiety just for a trip to the grocery store. But in the Suburban, I'm not so worried about being run over by other drivers who "didn't see me." I don't feel such a constant need to have no other cars anywhere near me. And being a 20-something-year-old truck, it's not like I'd worry too much about bird droppings or errant shopping carts, or really any of the other things that give me ulcers in my Miata. It's incredibly liberating. Just drive it places and park it. It'll still be there when you get back, and probably in about the same condition you left it in. It also happens to be pretty great at all the things my Miata sucks at. Hauling people, or my full-stack guitar amplifier, having cold AC, handling terrible road surfaces, you get the idea. As for the cars as avatars thing, I've always felt like an anomaly there. I tend to drive cars I like to look at, and that usually means other people like looking at them too. But I don't want to be noticed on the roads. Well, I want to be noticed in the context of, "hey, there's a car there -- don't hit it." But I don't want attention. By far my most frequently used words behind the wheel are, "get the fuck away from me." I get that for many people cars are the most visible material signifier of the social status and persona they wish to project. But sometimes I wish my car looked like a 10-year-old Camry to everyone who isn't me.

I love the BMW i3. Never bother with the REX, just get the BEV preferably with the update. The range isn't amazing but usable, they're efficient, they have excellent visibilty, great interior space without being big outside, they're not that heavy, the carbon fiber chassis feels special. They drive properly nice! They have AMAZING seats! An i3 is all I want to zip around in. My friend had one for several years, he and his parents and me all loved the damn thing.

I sometimes have a different kind of guilty pleasure: I have driven my E63 (W212 with the 6.2L Na V8) under 10L /100km. (google tells me that's more than 23.7 US mpg). The first time, i was on my way to a birthday party, in 36°C so the AC was doing much needed work. It was a bit more than a 2 hour drive and on our highways i was going 10 kph over the limit on the display which means i am close enough to the limit on our highways to not be fined. (So for this journey it the limits were mostly 130 kph and 100 kph) Covered around 1000m height difference (only counted upwards difference), so wasn't just going on flat terrain. But when i was 50km from the endpoint, i realized that i was way too early, reduced speed and just "floated" on the first lane with 80 or so, without being in the way (which is important to me. Also, anything weighing more than 7.5 tons is only allowed to drive 80 here too, so choosing a spot behind a big truck and staying there like EV drivers often have to, to even reach their destination 😁). It's not something i do often but it's not hard to reach over 21 mpg (if google coverted it correct) in normal circumstances. (and that despite being around mountains)

Im sure hyphen is a good rider for a regular guy. Still, unless that V4R is much, much faster than the Ducati that Josh Herron (sp?) raced, you'd just see how much difference rider skill makes on a bike as the Sapphire walks away from it. After all, Jason specifically mentions in the first video the bike showed up that all the numbers they could find on it were way slower than what Josh pulled.

The Ford straight six was available until the mid 90's in the F-Series and the Bronco. With a long rear gear, they were a comfortable highway cruiser, especially when matched with a 5 speed. Even with fuel injection, they retained that older character which is why they still appeal to some people. Not a powerhouse by any means.

What is Jason's main complaint about Subarus? Is it mostly the weight? I live in Wisconsin; our state bird is the Outback, so I've driven/been in a lot of them, and I couldn't agree more with his assessment of the drivers, but it's for good reason. The things are all comfortable and slow (except for the FA24DIT, that's only moderately slow). They're a fantastic car if you don't care about driving at all. But if there's a better second car than my WRX to compliment an NA Miata up north, I'm all ears (needs to get me to work in the salty months, fit 2 50lb dogs, and have solid aftermarket support).

In terms of modern cars I'm struggling to think of 5 modern cars that I would actually want. The 86/BRZ absolutely makes the list but I would rather a 1st year without modifications. Something called the Lightyear One makes the list because it is Citroen of old modernized. Beautiful to look at, slow as all and a number of odd quirks about the design. Beyond that I'm really struggling to come up with ideas of cars that I would really pay money for if I had the money. A heavily, heavily modified Rivian R1S would be ok. It just has to lose over a ton of weight, get significantly better ride/handling and a completely redone interior. That or a cargo van would be my only non cars and I'd only get one or the other with the purpose being a long term travel vehicle for me to stay in isolated places. If I really wanted an electric car I would go Taycan Sport Turismo or Cross Turismo. I want an estate, not a sedan. Problem is that I hate glass roofs of any kind. I just want a solid roof. Beyond that there isn't anything that interests me that I can think of at the moment.

I'm over the concept of guilty pleasures. You either should like it shamelessly because there's nothing wrong with it, or on the other hand if there's a reason that your conscience is nagging you about something, maybe you should listen to your own mind, and not take pleasure in those things that make you feel guilty? There's plenty of cars out there that give experiences I'd like to try for 15 minutes, but there are very few that give experiences I want to invest in enough to buy, own, and maintain for years on end. I hope someday to be able to afford a clean, unmolested 986 Boxster S perhaps. I don't need to cut the cats out of it, supercharge it, or swap a V8 into it. If I could afford to I'd put the Vonnen hybrid system in it.
