I Bought a Cheap Land Rover From a Car Auction. So What's Wrong With It?

Today I'm discussing the Land Rover Freelander I bought at a second hand car auction. I got it for what I feel is a decent price, but it certainly isn't without it's faults.
Let's talk about them...
Thanks for watching :)

In my experience that fuel gauge issue sounds like it could be a grounding issue with the sender when the pump is under a bit of load. No experience with Land Rover though. But brilliant video. Nice to see a solid car bargain.

Run a 2010 freelander 2 with 210000 miles on. Electrics are notorious-central locking gave up years ago-faulty key and sensors so not economical to repair and blows bulbs for a pass time. But.....wouldn’t swap it for the world! Love it! Comfortable and mechanically reliable-never has more than service costs. 32.6 average fuel. People should look at long term ownership costs to include reliability, not just fuel/tax/insurance costs. Great car-comfortable and safe on muddy Devon roads.

The battery in the key is actually very easy to replace but you want to make sure you seal it again properly when glueing it closed since these are water tight keys, there's also an issue with the buttons wearing down inside the remote and it not registering presses. I solved this by adding a small bump of jb weld to the back of the rubber button to make a larger contact area. as for the fuel issue its another common issue with the sending unit and I believe you need to drop the tank to replace it. you should have the rear diff looked at and the haldex serviced. the carrier bearings in the diff fail on the first years of these and it can be a bit expensive to repair. these almost never have any rust issues but you'll want to at some point pull off the trim pieces and clean in behind them and check for areas dirt has worn through the paint and on the rear wheel arches they would have had a rubber piece that comes right off that traps a lot of water and dirt, I can't see if yours has it. these are really the best land rovers made and get treated pretty unfairly by Land Rover dick heads that think its not capable.

The fuel gauge fault and the misbehaving odometer are indications of a fault with the instrument cluster, which will, eventually, stop working entirely. You can check the vehicle's actual mileage by interrogating the ECU with a good scanner as the total mileage is recorded to the computer and can't be tampered with without wrecking the ECU entirely. If you replace the instrument cluster with a new or good used item coded to the car, it will start reading the mileage correctly using the data from the ECU. Ford clusters from this period are pretty well known for failing out in this sort of manner and are usually not expensive to replace, even with brand new items. I don't know if this necessarily applies to Ford-ownership Land-Rovers as there may not be as many companies selling genuine parts at heavy discounts as there are with Fords, but I'm sure that it won't be too hard to find a new or second-hand replacement item as plenty of these Freelanders have been broken up after suffering financially irreparable issues... The issue with the remote key fob is far from unknown and is often caused by the key fob just being generally worn out, though the fact that it only shows up in cold weather could show that it's an issue with the battery getting weak. It might be sensible to consider replacing the fob entirely as it will have had a hard life with getting dropped and so-on and it would be annoying to pay to get a new battery in it only to have it fail entirely soon after. If you have other fobs with the vehicle than trying using them may indicate whether it is that key fob at fault or if there is an issue with the vehicle, though I would think that unlikely as the symptoms you describe are not common to issues with the security system on the vehicle...

I have the 3.2 i6. It's much more refined than the diesel and quieter too. Yes, it's expensive on the road tax and less frugal as far as mpg is concerned. But it's smoother to drive and gives more smiles per gallon than something that sounds and smells like a tractor.

I’ve got quite a soft spot for Freelanders. Later models are closely related to the Volvo XC60 (the window switch panel and seat controls are pure Volvo) They are no more unreliable than any other modern car, people have such a downer on them. Prefer it to any Audi or BMW anyday

Hey! Those window switches are from the Volvo parts bin, they're in my C30 and S40. You could've done worse tbh, these aren't as unreliable as the bigger LRs. The fuel gage issue is a known issue, afaik the fuel sensor is attached to the fuel pump, and if you replace that it should be fine.

The problem with the POV cam is that it's too high up. Otherwise I pfefer it to e.g. a dash cam. Another viewing angle that looks kind of interesting is imo from the back and through between the front seats. Advantage is, you see the driver, the interieur and the road. Also it's not shaky but I don't mind about that all that much

That POV cam is higher than I am! Great video and it's funny how the mileage is reseting but the car seems nice and clean not much wear inside and the body looks straight from what I can tell so I'd hedge a bet that something is wrong with the binacle but not tampered with, have it checked out and video it I'm very interested to find out. Although a Google search would probably give me an answer. Edit: check your car battery...

@MrBlellow
@MrBlellow 4 жыл бұрын
It's possible the electrical problems are caused by an old, weak battery (or possibly a bad alternator, or a slipping serpentine belt). All of these situations will cause low or unstable voltages, which in turn will cause the ECUs to run improperly. If you have another big enough battery, you could try swapping them for a while and see if the electrical problems still appear. The issue with the doors not unlocking when the temperature is cold, in particular, is very likely to be caused by a weak battery. I say this but the most electronically complex car I've ever owned is a mk2 VW Polo, and I'm pretty sure a 2008 Freelander is far more complex than that.
@frglee
@frglee 4 жыл бұрын
It's nice, even with the little faults. Dealers can often tell the mileage by the state of the pedal rubbers or other interior wear spots. Let's hope the first service bill or repair doesn't cost more than the car did (and the second, and the third...) There's the rub with an older and more sophisticated luxury vehicle, even though you can enjoy all sorts of great features. Myself, I prefer something a lot more 'basic' in an older cheap car - less to go wrong, I reckon. And bearing in mind that a 15 year old car, with 100K+ mileage, say, will always have things that wear out and need replacing, maybe keeping your old car on the road is the better bet than getting a 'new' old car with nasty surprises.Better the devil you know, than the one you don't. But if you buy wisely, old cars can be a sensible and economic choice.

The rear end Haldex unit can be an expensive problem. The 50,000 mile 2010 FL2 HSE SDV4 I had started to hum at the back end which got progressively louder and louder and became a rumble which got louder and louder. Went to Land Rover and they said it was a design fault in the earthing of the Haldex, and was the subject of a recall. The unit built up a static electrical charge up like a capacitor and then arced across the bearings in the Haldex causing, microscopic pitting which obviously through time and mileage get slowly worse at first, then more rapidly eventually causing rear end vibration and severe rumbling. My car was covered under warranty but would have caused £1,200 for the upgrade replacement. So if you are see one and you are thinking of buying a pre 2013 FL2 check this out.Although it was a truly great car to drive, there were several annoying aspects.Turbo Lag is pretty bad. Put you foot down and nothing...... then boof! it goes like a rocket. I developed a technique of putting my left foot on the brake while accelerating to counteract the lag.The dash lights are woefully dim. However this was cured when the 2013 model when LED lights were introduced.The exhaust tail pipe and back silencer totally waste the look at the back. I ended up painting the silencer with matt black engine paint and buying a twin clamp-on twin chrome tailpipe attachment which looked amazing and better than that abysmal 2013 effort where you could see the fake chrome bit. Follow the link below to see one.www.ebay.co.uk/p/Twin-Exhaust-Tail-Pipe-Stainless-Land-Rover-FREELANDER-2-Diesel-Tip-Td4-Chrome/15031008952The Satnav software update costs more than a new top end Garmin of TomTom and it is annoying slow and even the new ones are at least a year out of date and not updated online, it is a set of CDs and take hours to install. 2013 had a USB stick, but is still takes hours to install.The suspension is also a bit hard on B roads and makes for a giggly ride, it seems to have a sporty firm suspension. I got round this by running with my tyre pressure as low as possible, but increased it on long drives, say >50miles.But saying all that I still loved the car. I now drive an RRS HSE SDV6
