Wow, that comment about Lucifer aged poorly. As annoyed as I am that the Hazbin Hotel pilot is being selective with which parts are canon and which aren't, I still should have kept in mind that a pilot episode is nothing but a proof of concept that is always subject to change. I'll take the L on this one.

You’re not the only one that got confused. Especially when Husk mentioned him being forced to stay at the Hotel due to Alastor. It seems like the pilot is canon in some ways but not canon in others which is weird, but whatever makes the creators happy ig.

@Bootyball_Jones The events are canon but the specific details of what words they used and what their voices sounded like and what they looked like isn’t canon.
@melodystarlight79339 ай бұрын
But I personally think Charlie’s song Inside of every demon is a rainbow, is canon because it wasn’t as good of a song as all her other songs in the series but that’s mostly because she was singing so fast and about so much while trying to convince people and being stressed about convincing them. Did you see how she got distracted and stopped singing to say “uhh… sort of…?” in her song Ready for this when Susan asked her ”you mean like human flesh”? I think she gets distracted easily and was trying too hard and that’s why the song is so much at the same time and isn’t as good as the other songs in the series. Cause it wasn’t because her voice was bad, it sounded awesome! It was so much and I think she learned from the interview and talking to Adam a bit more about getting through to people with songs. The song wasn’t too much and I’ve had it stuck in my head for at least a week now but she did show that side of her from the Inside of every demon is a rainbow song when she went “so who’s with me? wouldn’t it be super to see more of hell? join up now if you like travel! come on boys, hop in the saddle!” so clearly she hasn’t changed too much but she clearly learned something and showed that in the next lines when she got more into why they should follow her while still being more upbeat and loving her idea but also using more fancy/old words to speak to the old timers better. “lotta sights to see en route to my hotel, not to mention the camaraderie. yessiree, you’ll form life changing friendships with the folks along the way.” Wow this is long. I didn’t realise that I wrote so much 😅 I could write 800+ word essays about Hazbin hotel and not even realise lmao. If you actually read this whole thing, I’m sorry about it being so long. If you didn’t read it all, then you’re not seeing this and I can’t tell you anything. Have a happy day in hell everyone!

Totally agree with everything you said here. The issues of needing to pace themselves with the character development, and the extreme fanon-canon ratio, kind of have Viv and the team between a rock and a hard place. Because while the show clearly would indeed be better if they slow down and peel back these character's layers only after better establishing the baseline, there's also the issue of the fact that production of this show is naturally going to be rather slow and the fandom will _certainly_ beat Viv to the punch. And if the fandom develops the characters faster than the source material is willing to, it waters down the impact when the canon finally decides to hit on the topics everyone's already thoroughly explored. Even worse, we start running into problems with the canon material not lining up with too-well-established fanon interpretations, which fans tend to have problems with for some reason. In an ideal world the solution to this dilemma is simply output content faster, but not sure how realistic that is.
@iselljams64682 жыл бұрын
i think viv is doing exactly that however with the new series helluva boss which i think os genius in a way this gives them time to create the backstories and character development of the hazbin characters while also keeping the fandom occupied with helluva boss and the characters from that series i think they are doing exactly what you recommend releasing content faster except its another series
@eldritchteletubby93192 жыл бұрын
@@iselljams6468 I know this comment is old, but I love the implication that the team is literally just distracting millions of rabid fans with a less important series so that they'll all shut up. First off: This was a riot, thank you so much! Second: It's always so strange watching content for this show because I have contentedly remained on the outskirts of the fandom since the very beginning. I discovered HH about four months before the pilot released and even then, I did the bare minimum research on it because I am not one of the people who gleefully gobbles up just any content I can find on something. Alongside that, I feel a bit weird saying this, but because I studied media in school (and also because I have also remained on the outskirts of the other two online fandoms you mentioned as well), I've gotten a pretty good eye for certain things. Interestingly enough, despite all of the comedy in the pilot episode, the Addict video was what I was actually _expecting_ from the show. I know plenty of people aren't super perceptive with the media they consume, they just want something they can enjoy (so do I, _god_ so do I), so I'm not talking down on anybody for possibly NOT expecting the show to have this tone. Addict was just exactly what I was expecting, especially for Angel Dust's character, and I was ecstatic when it dropped. Not because it confirmed any of my theories or anything like that, but simply because it gave me what I'm _expecting_ to get further down the line: Character development in a _character_-driven show. So long as HH doesn't end up like most of the animation of the last decade, I'm totally on board with it. If it derails into world-building and fandom nods, I'll be perfectly content to throw it on the garbage pile and never look at it again. Simple as. Basically, thanks so much for the main video and for the discussion after it. This was a treat.
@Falcon-doing-doodles4 жыл бұрын
welp, time for me to do a comment! ok, to start I think the point of addict was to tell us more about angel, not say he's a good person, or even an ok person. Pornstars, prostitutes and sex workers of any kind are *VERY* likely to face abuse in their, well, line, of work, so this is a unfortunately very realistic portrayal of what angel's life would be like. Second, this solidifies both cherri and angels friendship as well as angel's reason for going to the hotel. Cherri tries to help Angel by them indulging in destroying things that remind him of what he had to go through. Angels motives for going to the hotel are simple: working for Valentino meant he lives in the porn studio, and Valentino lives there too. Angel doesn't see it as a safe place, so the hotel is his way of escaping, in a sense. Third, this song *is* kinda about about them doing this because "screw it, we're in hell", its just not for the reasons you might think without the imaging. The indulge to escape from the past, which is what most people do with drugs or destructive behavior. I do agree that it might be too early for something like this, and I would like to see some more solidifying of characters to remind the fans that these aren't little baby's that need to be protected uwu (I legitimately hate myself for that), but this does help the show in some ways, and it's going to make fans more interested in Cherri Bomb, since she didn't have a huge role in the pilot and is normally overlooked in the cast of characters, despite being Angels best friend, so that means that wee can have more of their interactions in the future, which will help the characters develop even more. All in all, I'd give this video a solid 9/10. I don't understand all the complaints, but I understand where they're coming from.

Isn’t the point to having a fun upbeat song with the dark backstory to show how Angel is putting up a facade? Also, I think the part where Angel and Cherri are dancing together is more symbolic than actual plot. It shows the message of them being friends and comforting each other, and contrasts it with how Angel felt before meeting Cherri. Actually, all of the dancing scenes might be symbolic. It doesn’t have to actually happen if it’s not a flashback, I think.
@oliviamorales94063 жыл бұрын
Yeah you're right, the dance moves have a lot of subtle meanings behind them, especially in the opening scene where Angel is at the strip club. There was a video done by one of the storyboard artists for Addict explaining the meaning behind his movements and facial expressions, in which Angel is subtly giving off his hatred towards Val but he's hiding it in a way that makes it look like Angel is just dancing in a seductive way. One example was when Angel says "F*ck being a sober hoe" he bites his thumb which at first glance looks a normal dance move, but in reality he is actually flipping Val off, but he's making it look like it's part of the show. Btw the biting the thumb is a reference to Romeo and Juliet, because apparently that's an old fashioned way of flipping someone off.

But at the same time behind closed doors everything crumbled and I would act a lot like Angel does in the video with crashing things and showing vulnerability, but unlike Angel I did not have a friend to support me in this, and if you remember the pilot Angel Dust says “I owed my girl buddy a solid, isn’t that a ''redeeming'' quality? Helping friends with stuff” plus the scene after they get back to the hotel where Angel makes a joke and then tries to comfort Charlie but ultimately gives up on it... also there are posts on the official character Instagram/Twitter accounts that show these things to be parts of the characters yet to be explored. What does your abuse or the fact that abuse victims put up masks have anything to do with what was said in the video? Cause a lot of your comment came across like "I suffered from abuse, except I didn't have the support that angel does; be sad for me." Everyone understands that Angel is acting a certain way because of his abuse, sure. But he also enjoys being a bad person. He enjoys drugs, and being provacative and sexy, and he enjoys destroying things sometimes. Some of it might have been done as a response to his abuse, but it's likely developed to the point where he legit enjoys the chaos now too. 3:06 Uh, no... the scenes aren't really clashing. Cherri is nursing Angel through a detox after going on a bender... only for him to go right back out and do it again. They're flashing back and forth to sort of symbolize the cycle of addiction. The party scenes and detox scenes are two sides to the same coin. So they're quite appropriate to be mashed together.
@kaprincess094 жыл бұрын
You forgot a very important sin...Angel starts with red nails in the very beginning of the video and then every other time his nail polish is gone. HOW DARE THEY. On a more serious note I agree with you regarding the fandom potentially influencing canon. It's happened far too many times where shows, franchises, etc. will change certain plot points or characters in order to better suit what they believe the fandom wants, rather than what would be better/make sense for the story. One of the examples I like to use is the RWBY fandom. They thought they had Blake and Yang get together because of the fandom and then tried to do the same with Qrow and another character, even though Qrow's whole thing is that he is unlucky and needs to work alone. Sometimes fans need to remember their place, obviously creators do like their fans (for the most part) and want to make them happy, but at the end of the day this is a story THEY have made and that they are choosing to share with US. We don't get to influence the canon, and we really SHOULDN'T be able to. A few cute references to things the fandom likes would make sense (kinda like an A113 or a piece of fanart appearing in the background) but it shouldn't be something that would influence canon.
@graceserenity83484 жыл бұрын
As a member of the RWBY fndm, I can say that's 100% true. Even the voice actors for Blake and Yang were VERY vocal about making their precious ship canon. The fan base completely ruined the show. Not to mention the animators for the last volume are part of the reason we now have this Qrow and Clover mess (Some animators admitted to animating Clover flirty around Qrow because they thought it was cute.). Rooster Teeth is to blame too for pandering to the toxic fans. I'm not even sure how long the company is going to last. They've made some stupid decisions and they ruined their star show. On a more serious note, I do hope Viv doesn't give into the toxic fans. Everything regarding fan stuff and voice requests during the live streams is for fun. While I don't doubt that there are fans that forget that the characters aren't good people, I don't think those kind of things will influence the show. At least, I hope they don't. The only thing we can do is wait, continue to support Viv and her team, and hope she doesn't let the fans get to her and influence her story.

In terms of your concerns about the fans changing the show, Viv has said in the past that she's fine with people doing stuff with her characters BUT that isn't gonna make her change the show, secondly Viv has said that Angel specifically is gonna have the more emotional story within the show and that this music video is intended to give us a peek into Angel's complexities which will be explored later down the line within the show itself, also Viv has said that Angel is a character that she put the most work into and that she based Angel and Val's relationship off of her own experiences with being in an abusive relationship, so yes Angel having this tragic side to him was what Viv always intended, the Addict MV is meant to give us a peek into that, also Viv did say that we are gonna delve into most of the major character's backstories Also I might add that this video wasn't telling us that "Angel's a good person" it was telling us "There's more to Angel than meets the eye" basically giving us a first peek into the layers of Angel's character, also he can be a victim of abuse while still being an asshole, most likely this asshole persona is just that, a persona, a defense mechanism he uses to hide his pain and to keep others from getting close (y'know the old saying hurt people, hurt people) and the only people he lets get close are Cherri and his own pet pig EDIT: Also in regards to the last comment you made in the video "fans and only fans ate it up" it kinda rubbed me the wrong way as it gave me the impression (That may not have been your intention but that's just the impression I got) that you think Viv added in the darker elements of the music video JUST to please fans which is not true as I stated before this was meant to give us a peek into Angel's layers as a character and his struggles NOT to pander to fans who like to woobifie Angel and as I said Viv always intended for Angel to have this tragic side to him and the fact that Angel is a huge comfort character for her as she used her experience with being in an abusive relationship to make the basis of Angel and Val's relationship and it shows in this music video and most likely part of Angel's arc will be to get out of said abusive relationship, and in terms of tone for when Hazbin becomes an actual TV show I honestly think it's gonna be in a similar vein to Bojack Horseman (which Viv is a huge fan of) where it mixes in character drama with elements of comedy EDIT 2: Just wanted to say sorry for the essay length of this comment I tend to do that if I have a lot of thoughts on something, but one last thing I want to talk about is the tonal issues between the pilot and music video, there was a bit of complaining that the pilot has some problem with it's tone mostly the fact that it has quite a bit of slapstick comedy and a lot of raunchy humor but still wants to tell a serious story, an example of this being having the mostly comedic limo scene BUT having the tone immediately switch to serious once we get to the Hotel somber music and all, that's not to mention the scene of Charlie calling her mom being completely serious, even you have to admit that can be a complete whiplash for a casual viewer, so it seems that once Hazbin becomes an official series Viv is gonna prioritize character development and story and have comedy be a secondary element so it doesn't become completely depressing and to me this music video is sorta giving us a peek into the kinds of serious stories and topics the show is gonna delve into (Here's a video that talks about this, which Viv actually put into her personal playlist on her channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/romufpx4rtJmrqM )

I really love the tone shift, since Hazbin Hotel is about redemption, and therefore must be heavily character-based. The whole reason that I got into Hazbin Hotel in the first place was that I enjoy redemption arcs and character-based shows. If Hazbin is to focus on redemption, then heavy character-based stuff is inevitable. To pull off a redemption arc, a character must be shown to have motives for their actions, remorse over said actions, somebody pushing them to be better, and something to set the stakes higher/make it harder for them to be redeemed (ie: ongoing bad situation, addiction, peer pressure, the sentiment "one more time wouldn't hurt"). Motives can be heavy, as can the things that raise the stakes. since Hazbin takes place in hell, everyone (save Alastor) will probably be in an ongoing bad situation, and will need to make the decision that drives all redemption arcs. the choice between the mentalities of "I suffered, so why shouldn't you" and "I suffered, but you don't have to.". it is possible for Hazbin hotel to be both a comedy, about redemption, and have heartfelt and/or heavy moments (think "The Good Place"), but when dealing with redemption, it is impossible to remove the heartfelt and heavy moments. sincerely, a girl obsessed with redemption arcs and character analysis

Honestly I like the idea of these characters having backstories, but it still shouldn’t cover up what they do. Example, Nagito Komeada is usually seen as a “UwU victimized little cinnamon roll” when I’m reality, he’s still fucked up and a character that was meant to be chaotic, he’s not supposed to be a character that’s a sweetie pie. That’s how I feel about Alastor and Angel. No matter how everyone portrays Alastor, he’s still a monster. While Angel can have a troubled backstory, Angel is still meant to be a horny asshole. I don’t get how characters that are supposed to be chaotic turn into “UwU babies”. I’m not saying you can’t portray these characters as troubled characters, but you can’t completely fucking that they’re literal demons

I totally agree with the imbalance. I have a story myself I’ve worked on for years, dissecting characters and their flaws, making them characters people can love, and I haven’t even begun creating that fictional world and yet my friends and even I see my characters as less than what they truly are. 2 and a half extra sins: 1) During the beginning of the str*pper scene at the start, it cuts between Angel having 6 and 4 arms very quickly with no explanation 2) In the scene before they start dancing, Angel is in a red dress dress. That is the only time we see that particular dress. It immediately cuts to him back in his suit and then moves to the scene of him getting dressed. 3) And third, half a sin since I don't notice details like that and can't tell whether it happens more than once, but after Angel and Cherri begin to walk out of the club (while they're still in it) both Angel's eyes have white sclera when the one on the right is supposed to be black. I understand the concerns with Hazbin's future, and I'm a little worried as well. Having such a personal relationship with the fans like the actors and creators of Hazbin do can, even accidentally, start to have some consequences, but I also kind of get it too? Okay, so, Vivzie has had these characters for a long time. Years. She definitely has a detailed head-canon about every one of her character's backstories, needed character archs, relationships, ect. And as a fellow "oc creator", I guess, I can see how it's difficult to keep from letting too much information out too early on. I mean, she already knows them personally, so I imagine she would want her audience to feel the same way, and really connect with the characters, even if it's at a pace not well suited. I'm sure I'm way off, but that's how I see it.

I appreciated that you took time in your first video to thoroughly talk about criticisms, and I appreciate that you did the same here. There are some good points made, especially about mischaracterization of Alastor (I find it refreshing when I find fanfics and such where he is being a genuine sadistic asshole because it keeps me reminded that he is supposed to be a horrible person like that) However, I disagree with Angel being a victim of abuse being out of line for him. My interpretation is that he has all this abuse and as a result he starts being an absolute jerk to everyone. Push everyone away keeping them from getting close to you, make jokes at everyone else's expense, and squash your emotions only letting people see an assholish "i dont care" attitude. So I feel that both the victimisation in Addict and his behaviour in the pilot can co-exist I also don't feel that the video was being influenced by the fans to take a different direction than Angel's story was supposed to take. I don't have hard evidence sources, just vague memories of hearing something somewhere sometime, so take this with a grain of salt. But from what I've picked up, Viv does seem to have put the most thought into Angel's background specifically, and he was meant to be an abuse victim numbing his pain with drugs and hiding behind a mask long before the pilot released (Again, sorry for the lack of sources. I hate making unbacked up claims) Overall I do hope that the fandom doesn't end up spinning things out of control (I can kind of agree with the FNaF thing having gotten into it when only 1 and 2 were out, and then seeing where it has ended up now)

I don’t remember where I heard this, but Angel Dust was actually created before Hazbin Hotel was fully planned out, and according to the source, he was meant to be a trauma character that uses sarcasm and sexual tendencies to mask his pain. Something I hope happens with the show is that they keep these darker themes, but gradually include them as the show progresses. It starts off as the comedy it presents itself to be, and while it doesn't ever stop doing that, it adds more of these kinds of themes later. That's what I hope. I have faith in Vivzie and her team and am optimistic about where Hazbin will go because it's obvious how much time and thought and love they've all put into it, so I really hope it goes well.

So this is my take on the story I got from the animation. In the beginning we see Angel. If you look on the wiki page it shows that Val is his boss. Val only cares for Angel because of the money he gets him. So he uses Angel to get what he wants. Now as for Cherry. I think that since her backstory hasn’t really been showed yet this is a small taste as to what happened to her. The scene where her and Angel are dancing at a club I think symbolizes that they found each other a long time ago and became friends. The scene at the end of the credits I think shows Angel fighting the bad parts of him. He wants to be redeemed but is scared to do it. He has built up walls when it comes to things like Val but if he goes through with this then he won’t have that kind of protection anymore. He love/hates his work. He wants to be redeemed but is scared of what he’s risking. In the end he is staying at the hotel and decides to give this a shot. That’s my opinion please don’t hurt me.

As I believe pretty much all the fnaf games stand on their own as very good horror experiences and that the deep lore that Scott has built is one of the most fascinating parts of the games. I understand where you're coming from and I respect your opinions. I'm a bit worried with a lot of the issues you mentioned aswell but I reckon Viv probably has a plan for the characters. Like with the issues you had with Alastor being too goofy when he's supposed to be a powerful tyrant. Look at the joker from a lot of DC shows, he can be a powerful menace who strikes fear into everyone and he can also be the butt of the joke a lot and made to look silly. I know that Alastor is a fucking monster, and thats exactly what I like about him. If I were to make fanart of him, I would always portray him as a fricking psycho with a smile. I like psychotic fictonal villains, that could potentially destroy everything in their wake *and enjoy it.* I absolutely adore characters that have no sense of empathy and only want to see the world burn. I would never like someone like that, that is an actual existing person. I can tell the difference between real and fictional, and I prefer fictional. I simply love Alastor the Radio Demon for his eerie monster-like aura that screams: „I will infact not kill you, I will torture you and watch you suffer.“ I like characters like him, that have the absolute amazing villain „idgaf about you“ vibes, and the way they portrayed him as this complete sadistic psychotic lunatic with a smile, kinda reminds me of jack horner from puss in boots. I am in no way a simp for him, god no. But Alastor has by far the best design in my opinion.

“Comedy first, with actual drama later on” I 100% agree. Though I want comedic shows to just be funny nonsense most of the time, it's really important to have some sort of climax and redemption arc. It's also nice to see why characters are the way they are, see how they develop, what makes them tick, etc. The soft sides of some characters are already shown in the pilot, like when Angel genuinely looks like he wants to comfort Charlie. Characters should never just be 2D. They need to have some sort of depth that makes them interesting. Otherwise, they're just bland and can seem unimportant to the story, like Millie from Helluva Boss. Angel isn't just a gay asshole druggie that fucks people for money. He has trauma that possibly affects nearly everything about him. Maybe he's not an asshole, and he just has walls/trust issues, similarly to Blitzo. Just a small music video gives us so much context and backstory to only two characters, and I'm convinced that there's still so much more coming.

I like to think of this video as Vivzipop "reacting" to the criticism of Angel Dust. A loud few people complained that Angel was two dimensional because of all the sex jokes he was involved in. This music video paints Angel's behaviour in the pilot in a very different light. Instead of being a gay sex-addict, he now is a victim of sexual abuse who can only deal with his trauma through expressing his sexuality and losing himself in drugs. So to me, it feels like Vivzi heard the complaint about Angel, and so decided to address that. I agree, though, that I don't want the fandom to consume this show. Character drama I will eat up, as this is a character-driven show. However, I don't want it to suck out all the fun of the show either.
@XMewMoonLightAkitaoX4 жыл бұрын
Indeed. The pilot got a lot of negative attention and heavy criticism. However, I feel it was unfounded because as this music video shows, neither of the characters are just 2D funny and offensive oc's. I think Viv took that perhaps personally since Angel is the character she put most attention to and he has helped her get through her tough times. Seeing the comments bashing him based on the little info they got of his life from a 30 minute pilot would've irritated me for sure. The worst is that she has to be careful what she says so as to not spoil any deep points of the show. She really puts thought into what she is able to say and what she has to stay quiet about.

I will say one thing, from the other series their doing it does seem consistent they develop their characters and that the series is drastically different than the pilot. I mean, look at millie or even stoles. They changed her accent, and changed stoles whole over all attitude. They sort of do give us whiplash with the changes. I agree.

THANK YOU!! Somebody else noticed the unfinished shot! I noticed that my second time watching but no body else did haha. I just noticed that his eye was slightly white where it shouldn't.

The whole song is sad honestly it just has a happy beat and seems happy but when you really listen to it it's sad I cried when I first listened to it I didn't watch the video or the ending but it was so sad and I also relate to it a lot angel already had a bad past and we knew that I personally love the little sneak peak we got to start his redemption the show is gonna focus on him growing

Good video :DDD perfect points and amazing explanations. No extreme criticism and still looks out for the fandom as well as the creators! Keep it up!

Watched this video not expecting to hear alastor say “Im the goodest dear boy” to where angel says “the fuck is wrong with you what happened” my day now confused and I’m questioning if this fandom has been corrupted before the first legitimate episode of a season comes out

I actually wouldnt say that at all. the use of Autotuning of Angel's voice was to give a more Dance Pop feel to the song. its a form of autotuning that props up the vocalization rather then it taking over the song or the singer. Cher did this the exact same way when she used Auto-Tune for the first time in all music history in her song 'Believe'. Instead of the Autotune guiding the lyrics, the vocals guide the song with autotune just being a fun effect on the vocals. In short, theyre just using the autotune as a back effect, not as a vocal course correction. Though i will say that Cher's Belive does use Autotune a bit more then this song. But the autotune riding vocals rather than guiding it is something they both do and is a great example. the reprise of the end section of the song without much of the actual instrumental helps acknowledge this alot, being able to hear the autotune not being used, fade in, then common till the end. Its a nice touch. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKbdhH2Qlrx3jac vs. Cher - Believe kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIu7g4lqgsqte9k

I have seen this theory that Angel was drugged inbetween the car scene/wine glass throwing scene, and the scene where they destroyed the strip club was a dream he was having while passed out. *I've heard people say they belive this cus if you pause at the right moment while cherri and angel are running out of the club, there is a sign that says "its all a dream"*

They are literal demons in hell. Angel died of a drug overdose. Of course he has a tragic back story. The show is not doomed.
