So many people complaining about the metal handles but I think it’s actually cool that he is doing something different to usual. You can find heaps of videos of people restoring knives to have normal wooden handles but like he does something creative with different processes so just chilllll
@jundies171
@jundies171 5 жыл бұрын
Maddie Hopkins most people use or flip the recreated knives/blades they make. Wood is just overall a better material. Lighter, Cheaper and (in an opinion type of stance) a better aesthetic. props to him for doing something different, but it is apparent that either he makes showroom knives or he just enjoys impractical knives

This is what many of the knives looked like that were carried by the Indian fighters known as the "Long Knives", on the early American frontier of the "Old Northwest", i.e. Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky, etc. Nice to see it being given a new life! I wouldn't necessarily consider it a "dagger" per se, unless you're comparing it to the Muslim "jambiya" dagger, which I guess it kiiinda looks like.😁

@Random Hands, if you're a beginner in knife making/restoring, job well done, but (just for the future projects to be so much better) if you're already using powertools, pay more attention to the detail, especially when it comes to handles, make it more symmetric, more precisely cut and I guarantee, your work will receive so much more appreciation and support for the next projects :)

the fact that you can slap together a handle in pieces that looks like a disaster and then turn it into something great takes a special kind of mind - most people can see a finished product but it's how you get there that's unique. Great project.

Most of these videos are by ppl that just started making videos. More props to them for putting in effort to record and make videos. It just makes me really upset they get so famous for doing sub-standard work. He left tons of corrosion on the tang under the wood, and dimensionally ruined the knife by free hand grinding the piss out of it. But it's shiny now, so like and subscribe. Lol

@Kai Lewis and @Golden Keeper Because a restoration preserves the original form. The blade has been through quite a change, having been reforged to a large extent, and the handle is absolutely gone. There's no intent to preserve the original here. I'd call it more like 'upcycling a very old blade simply because you could'. Thing is, with all the time, energy and money that went into remaking that knife, you could probably buy a brand new one. Since it was less restored and more recycled, you can't even justify it as 'a sentimental investment that was worth the work'. I'd like to think this was more a test of OPs skill, and that they can continue to improve their abilities by learning from their process here.

I just commented this myself. The entire point of restoration is to keep your own ideas out of the process, and restore it as close to the original version as possible. I was so upset that they completely butchered the handle and original pieces, it was such a shame to turn what could have been a wonderful example of an antique knife into something that honestly doesn’t even look that good now. It’s a shame.

@@lemonhead3067 It's messed up when people mould facts to suit opinions instead of moulding opinions to suit facts. This way opinions would be far more informed. en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/restoration Everything is in the description, please read. I get very much you are part of the p.c. and participation award culture but a little information goes a long way. To digress the guy did the best he could with the tools available to turn an old butchers knife into a kingly dagger (his words) but I wish he would have taken the time to restore the old butchers knife. It would have made for a far more useful blade, just my opinion.
