I grew up in the house my great-grandfather built in 1900. Our house had many similar lock sets an such. They had all been painted over in the decades before I showed up. Seeing them how they looked new is really cool.

Husband being a mechanic uses brake clean all the time for everything including wasp nests on and around the house. When it came up as beak clean I laughed way harder than I should have. My husband says what is so funny and I showed him he got a little giggle not near as big of a laugh as I did. About a minute ago I heard him say to one of our sons use brake clean on it. And I couldn't help myself.... I said no it's beak clean and we both laughed and our son looked at us like we're crazy.... That was a well-needed laugh! The handles look phenomenal and I love them!

Hi, love your restorations btw, I’m really interested in this concept of tinted lacquer.. I’ve looked online but can’t find much info. What products do you use? Thanks
@randomrestoration68582 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply - I mix my own lacquer and apply a mix of tints which are usually meant for coloring epoxy resins. I'm keeping the tinted lacquer I make a bit of a trade secret, sorry! That said, there are some companies that sell nitrocellulose or nitrocellulose blend lacquers in a can and tints which are compatible for those lacquers. An example is this gold toner used usually for brass instruments: votawtool.com/collections/lacquer/products/nikolas-2105-spray-lacquer-gold-tint?variant=34493982605447 and the clear lacquer which is sprayed over the gold tint: votawtool.com/collections/lacquer/products/nikolas-2105-spray-lacquer-clear?variant=34493982572679 I haven't used these in the past and can't say how well they work, but I'll likely test them out in a future video to see what sort of results I can get. Thanks a lot for watching, Sarans!

@randomrestoration68582 жыл бұрын
This design first popped up around 1885, and it still looks great today! I should add that these were originally sanded from the factory - The raised design was cast taller than necessary so that any small casting defects in the design could be sanded away. As a result, the height of the details in each pull is different from the next. Although I did sand the pitting caused by rust away, the raised design stayed intact. Thanks a lot for watching!
