Very Rusty Ornate 1880s Mortise Lock Restoration | Random Restoration

Welcome! Today's restoration will be a very rusty ornate cast iron double key mortise lock which was manufactured by Reading Hardware Co. in the 1880s. This old lock, like other old hardware I've restored by Reading recently, has a Windsor design cast iron faceplate. The Reading Windsor was manufactured starting in the mid 1880s, and based on the logo this antique lock has, this is an 1880s variant.
I started off this rather rusty hardware restoration by removing the two case cover screws. These are usually pretty loose fitting screws, so luckily they almost always unscrew without any fight, even when the case is in bad shape. With the case cover off, I removed all of the rust covered interior components. Following this it was on to paint stripping. There was very little paint and japanning left on the parts, so it probably wasn't really necessary haha.
Next up was rust removal - Like in all my restorations so far, I threw the rusted parts in some Evapo Rust for a day or four. I can't remember. With the rust removed I went ahead and wire wheeled all of the parts to clean off any remaining grease and stubborn grime. Before I could restore anything on this mortise lock I had to make new springs and keys. There were three broken flat springs that were replaced, and I quickly cut a couple keys - One for each keyhole.
Now I moved on to restoring groups of components. I started with the ornate faceplate which needed sanding, lacquering and had the recessed areas and back/edges painted black. When it came to the mortise lock case and case cover there wasn't much to do other than painting them black. Next I moved on to restoring the bolts. They were pretty much just got a thin layer of clear lacquer to protect them from tarnishing. The springs were then blued - Bluing steel will offer some rust protection. The remaining small parts were simply soaked in oil to protect against rust.
Now it was time to reassemble the mortise lock. The faceplate was screwed onto the case, the small components were reinstalled, the case cover was screwed into place and the mortise lock was finally done and looking almost like new! This was one rusty restoration - I actually only purchased this lock because I was going to swap a few interior parts with another identical bronze mortise lock which was missing a few parts, but decided I'd rather make new parts for that lock and fix it in a future video and make this one a proper trash to treasure restoration of sorts haha.

I had the pleasure of working in a old ( built 1927 )building that had locks similar to these. When working on different things during that time I would always wonder about who was the last man to work on it and think how they must have thought what new things they were working with. Good job restoring something that most people dont even know or care about.

I was perplexed, no stripper in a can. You made up for it with spray oil so I did indeed have the right channel. Meticulously done as always. I love the color but not there. I'm trying pigment and thinner but struggle with mixing. Not ready for metal. Awesome details and nuances in your works I truly enjoy.

Yeah I misplaced my spray on paint stripper, but rediscovered where I put it recently hahaha. Thanks a lot! I definitely agree, this color isn't quite right yet - The other tint I use is far too strong to easily mix with other colors. One drop of it is equal to approximately 20 drops of the new tint. I should be able to easily mix in different colors to really fine tune this tint in future videos. I tested pigments originally, but found them, to never mix well at all, and many which claimed to be a clear tint when dissolved ended up being a solid color when I could get them to mix. The tints I have been using recently are meant for epoxy resin and come in bottles. They mix well and are clear, so you're still able to see the metal underneath - A mirror finished piece will still be a mirror finish no matter what color tint is used. Thanks a lot for watching!

I think I may have asked you before, but do you sell these or use them in your home? I'm still in the market for a nice mortise knob and lock for my Eastlake style front door that I'm refinishing this year.

Haha we do have pretty similar upload times! Thanks a lot, I hope to find some knobs and backplates for this lock that I can install on my workshop door. It currently has the world cheapest mortise lock installed in it and it needs to go hahaha. Although this lock looked really grim when I got it, it really didn't see much use at all and is in great mechanical shape, so it should last many years issue free! As of right now I'm not selling any of the projects I do, but there's a high chance that I'll find a complete entry set in the future that I'd be willing to sell - I plan to put most of the stuff I've done so far to use, but I may try in the future to restore two entry sets in one go, sell one and keep one. You definitely want a nice set for that door - It's rare, but sometimes original sets will pop up for sale in near new condition. If I come across one I'll come back here and send you a link! Otherwise, remind me in a future video and by then I may have something interesting I can possibly restore for you. Thanks a lot for watching!

Thanks a lot! Hahaha yeah overall it's too yellow in my opinion, but you are correct about the green. At just the right angle and in direct lighting it sometimes has a green hue to it. I didn't apply as many layers of this new tint, and what I think is happening is that the silver metal mixed with the yellow see through tint causes a bit of a greenish glow. It definitely needs some adjustment haha. Thanks a lot for watching!

Well I appreciate your honesty hahaha. I highly recommend the rivet to screw conversion - Some mortise locks came from the factory with screws rather than rivets and hold up just as well as the riveted variants! It's probably way easier to grind the end of the rivet flat and drill the rest out, but I like to make things way more difficult than they should be haha. Thanks again for watching, Mark!

Hahaha it's odd, at very certain angles (and usually in direct sunlight) it does have a green color, but in every other circumstance it's too yellow for my liking hahaha. I'm going to adjust it in the future, as I think I can get a great color out of it in the end! The next video will feature a copper colored tint, or at least my first attempt at it. Much like this tint, it may take a few project to fine tune it to get closer to a convincing copper color, but I'll get there in the end haha. Thanks a lot for watching!

Thank you, Larry! Based on the logo which is on the case cover this lock is from the mid 1880s to early 1890s. Reading hardware started using this logo by at least 1883, but by the mid 1890s it was changed again. Thanks a lot for watching!

Thanks for the comment, Tori! I found the 1899 catalog I've shown in the past for free on archive.org by searching for Reading Hardware. There are a number of paid catalogs (from Reading Hardware and many other companies) you can find on the "Antique Door Knob Collectors of America" website under the "Books & Antique Hardware Catalogs" tab. Do you use any lube on the contact points inside the lock, or is it just left dry? Cool piece bro

Good question - This lock will be lubricated in the future, but for now I'll leave not lubricated at all. I'm thinking of installing this in my workshop door once I get the rest of the set, but it'll be sitting around collecting dust until then. I figure (no matter what type lube is used) it just makes since to freshly lube it up at the time of installation instead of many months prior. It also makes touching up paint way easier if any is chipped off when fitting this in the door since the case will still be clean - Lubricating the interior usually means getting lube all over the outside of the case too hahaha. Thanks a lot! This was surprisingly a quicker restoration, and only took around 45ish hours to restore I’d estimate - Everything goes a bit slower when you have to record the process, so it could have been done in around 20-25 hours if there was no recording involved. Thanks a lot for watching!

45 hours!! That's a lot and also the thing I dislike about KZbin sometimes.. for a video to ranking high and get more eyeballs you lose the passion in this type of craft. Thanks for making it look easy 👌🏾

@@waterbitten Haha yeah it is a major downside, then there is still the 30 or so hours to edit the video! I rarely have time to work on any restorations other than the ones I do on KZbin, so it's always refreshing when I get the chance to work on something and not worry about having to record it. How do you find all of these pieces that you restore? Do you just hit up a flea market every week?

Good question, I find these pieces online. There are a number of websites that hardware like this is sold on, and over the last year I have spent about 30 minutes a day every day looking at every new listing on these websites. It's time consuming, but It's worth it to find cool old hardware like this lock! Thanks a lot for watching, Amy!

This lock will be lubricated when it’s installed in a door, but it may be some time before that happens - Until then it’ll just e collecting dust haha. The main reason for waiting is that it’s easy to touch up any paint that may be chipped off in the fitting process since the case will still be clean, whereas if the case/case cover gets oily, greasy, etc. it would have to be thoroughly cleaned prior to any touch up work. Nicely done! I like the non-polished bronze, but am not too crazy about the more yellow tint… I’m curious where you find all this hardware (I wouldn’t mind picking up some myself.) By the way, I’m a bit skeptical of the primer story 😉

Thanks a lot! Hahaha yeah I'm with you there - It's a bit too yellow for my liking. Since It's a new tint I decided to see what a straight yellow would look like, and it certainly needs some additional colors added to it to get just the right color. I hope to get a copper color going in the near future, and will be testing that out in the next video. I found this lock on eBay - It was around $50, and came with a plain bronze double keyhole backplate that didn't belong to this lock at all haha. There are many websites that have a great selection of harder to find hardware such as "Olde Good Things" and Urban Remains Chicago which (unlike this lock) generally have less rusty hardware for sale haha. I'd like to think my version of primer would look about the same as the primer I normally use haha. Thanks a lot for watching!

I find all these online - This one was from eBay, but there are a number of websites out there (such as Olde Good Things) that have large numbers of hardware listings that are generally in much better shape than this crusty old lock hahaha. Thanks for watching, Chad!

Were they originally painted internally? There doesn't seem to be any evidence of it.

Good question - some were, some weren't. It seems less common for locks by Reading to have been painted (japanned) inside and out, but many companies like Yale & Towne, Russell & Erwin and Sargent & Co. very commonly had fully painted cases/case covers. Thanks a lot for watching!

Can someone explain what's the use of the small lever at 17:00? I've never seen that in modern locks and I have no I idea what's its purpose

Good question - This switch is used to lock the door knobs, and the second/upper keyhole is used to open the door when the doors are locked. It’s common to have a split hub in these locks which simply means only the outside door knob is locked rather than both of them. Thanks a lot for watching!

Haha sorry 'bout that! My editing program was/is so trash that it isn't usually possible to reliably level sounds to a satisfactory extent, though many areas are manually reduces such as polishing, wire wheeling, and drilling segments. Thank you for watching!
