We named our daughter after this hauntingly beautiful song. I finally got to see Randy live in 2018 at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival. As her band played an instrumental medley of some of her songs before she came on stage, I broke down in tears. She was, of course, amazing!

"Almaz" was written about a couple of Ethiopian refugees who were neighbours of Crawford's. The man asked Crawford to write a song about his wife, who was named Almaz (which means "diamond" in Amharic, Arabic and a number of other languages). In the song, the singer reflects on their rare form of love. In Crawford's own words, "I witnessed this perfect love affair between them, although she was considerably younger than him. This beautiful couple with their baby. As refugees they were looking for 'a world where love survives'

This is a song that takes you to another existence away from reality whilst all the time it hurts my heart deep inside so much so I know life just isn’t worth living without the one person in my life. My mum. The only person that makes life worthwhile that tells me everything is going to hold me In her arms and for that brief moment wipe away the tears I have that she’s no longer here to share life. Miss you so much mum

In concert years ago, Randy Crawford explained the meaning of the lyrics to Almaz. Almaz was a friend of hers, a really nice guy and she thought he was very handsome. The song describes his wife who is very beautiful, innocent and tender. They have a love 'so pure and simpler' and she describes him as 'Almaz, you lucky, lucky thing!' A song about pure love. I enjoyed learning the meaning of this beautiful song, and I hope you get some enjoyment too!! Regards Cj
