You have to dig into Randy Newman's catalogue to realize what a gifted and talented artist he is.

Randy Newman... Now here's an American icon that few react to. From the serious like this to You Can Leave Your Hat On. He can make you weep with sorrow or joy. Masterful.

No doubt my man.. this album is a masterpiece.. plus, who else had the balls to write and release “Rednecks”? Only Mr. Newman

The storm in Louisiana in 1927 was a historical disaster made even worse by political indifference. This is such a great tragic tune . On a lesser note I saw Randy Newman do this with a full orchestra at The Academy of Music in Philly in 1974 , with Frank Zappa in attendance .

The levy's in some cases were blown up on purpose, needlessly it turned out. I visited Chalmette (downstream) and they rightfully, are still pissed off about it. "They're trying to wash us away" is because New Orleans people in power literally did wash them away.

Hey Vince - stay safe - all the best!!! - We had the same thing here in Wallonia-Belgium a month back. Dry season and heavy rain. Not a good combination.

A somber tune describing just one form of grief. Randy Newman is an amazing American storyteller through song. A verse early in the song describes it raining for a long time. So, river flooding due to excess rainfall. Donate to relief/recovery if you can.

I'll never forget rolling through south eastern Iowa and crossing a nearly breached bridge into the most unbelieveable sight I ever saw. Other than the road I was on every square inch of land was three feet deep in water. Families literally moved what belongings they could to the only high ground there was. The highway. This went on for nearly 30 miles When I went by a family and a boy did the motion to blow my horn I lost it. That kind of hardship and resiliencey is unimaginable to most of us. Yet there are still people left in this country with that pioneer spirit willing to endure that life. God Bless them all. Stay safe Vince hopefully the improvements they made since Katrina are successful

Really appreciate that you guys don't follow the herd with your reactions. You find good stuff from great artists that might have never seen the charts, and we appreciate that. For Randy, my favorite was always Political Science, but my wife's favorite has always been 'Riders in the Rain'. Either would be much appreciated.

Camps were set up to aid displaced refugees. Racism was rampant. "The refugee camps also dealt with extreme racial inequality, as supplies and means of evacuation after flooding were given strictly to white citizens, with Blacks receiving only leftovers. African Americans also did not receive supplies without providing the name of their white employer or voucher from a white person. In order to fully exploit black labor, Blacks were frequently forced to work against their will, and were not permitted to leave the camps.[30] Later reports about the poor treatment in camps led Hoover to make promises of change to the African-American community, which he broke."

Love Randy. Reminiscent of 'Sail Away' to my ears, but he can do lotsa stuff. Heavy shit going on, now and then. He makes it accessible. 😥🎶🎹💞

This flood changed the country. All the young people moved north because they couldn't farm in the south. It led to the renaissance in NYC with music in Harlem when the educated blacks from the south went north for jobs.

This sounds a lot like his earlier more famous song “Sail Away”. I hate when song writers plagiarize especially from themselves

This isn't the original version. It's the version from The Randy Newman Songbook from 2003. The original version from 1974 is so much better.

I'm not sure where you got this recording, but this version is missing a lot. the album version from Good Old Boys has much richer arrangements and Randy's genius for harmony and arrangement shines much better on it.
